I'm not a farmer, not a cowboy or horseman. However, after discovering your channel, I have become fascinated with your job and the trimming of cow hoofs. I never knew this was such a big problem with cows or the fact that all this trimming takes place. It just proves that at age 80, a person can learn something new. Thanks Nate.

I never really had anyone answer the question about using a torch before. There are some trimmers who use one and others who don't. What you said about some types of blocks having a mold releasing agent that needs to be dried off makes a lot of sense. I think the trimmers like HoofGP who use a torch likely got into that habit because of those blocks. He had blocks falling off if he didn't do it, so he always did it that way. If you didn't have that experience, maybe you never bothered to use a torch. I think the glue also sticks better when it's warmed up and maybe different trimmers handle that situation differently too. But if the guy already has a torch out anyway, problem solved. Drying off the hoof and the block with a torch warms up the glue that's applied to them. If not, a trimmer goes about it a different way. And then there is the question of using different glues. Maybe some need to be warmed up more than others. So all of this may depend heavily on the types of blocks and glue you use. As far as cutting off protruding flesh goes, I've seen hoof trimmers do that. But it may not be the best practice because you risk doing more harm than good. HoofGP isn't even legally allowed to cut any living flesh. It can only be done by a vet. So, that's a big factor for trimmers where he lives. But using iodine or salicylic acid to shrink the protruding flesh is a much safer option. Less chance of causing the cow additional injuries. As for the silence in the video, I didn't really notice. You usually do a voice over and don't have much in the way of background noise anyway.
@juliefeasal8878
@juliefeasal8878 2 года назад
On the Hoof GP he has mentioned that he uses the torch on the block and hoof to dry it so the glue holds better because Scotland is so damp. Im glad Nate explained why he doesnt use one as that had me wondering as well

Fascinating, addicting and thought provoking… my thoughts: what a humane and rewarding job… and one of the steps of being so humane was use of topical antibiotics; probably also accompanied by other antibiotics from a vet at times… and I bet that makes this happier healthier family cow no longer part of any organic dairy… which makes me think a label that said “from small family farm in west WI,” would go a lot further with me than a label that says, “organic”

I CAN NOT STOP WATCHING! I have no firsthand farming experience at all - the closest I get is goin' up the hill and bagging up llama manure for mine and the neighbourhood's common areas - which we are lucky to have in abundance - as I seem to have inherited my Mamma's green thumbs, but here on RU-vid I ONLY watch true crime, so I have no idea how you came to be on my RU-vid home page but I pressed play and now I can't get enough! Other 'Hoofers' 😄 have tried to sneak into my subscriptions but Nate; 🎼 they just🎶ain't got what [you]'ve got🎵! Thank you ♥️.

I don't notice a ton of background noises usually, very much in the background. the narration is always calming
