We're partners with Split-Fire because they make top-notch products. And we're excited that today we get to show you their their 4003 Wood Chipper. We hooked it up to our 25HP Summit TX25 and then to our 38HP John Deere 2038R. It performed great with both, unexpectedly a little better on the higher horsepower machine. We'll walk you through the features and then demonstrate the chipper in action.

Looks really solid and well built. In all honesty, I've been very happy with my Woodland Mills 6" chipper. It's not perfect, but its hydraulic feed is its "make or break" feature. Plus, it's got direct-drive via the PTO shaft, no gearbox needed. (Of course, that reduction in complexity is probably offset by the hydraulic feed system!) Edit: Just watched the Split-Fire video on this machine. They run their rotor at 2100 rpm, which is much faster than a direct-drive running at 540. That's an interesting idea, I'd bet it really does help prevent jams as they say. (Okay, final thought - the chips it makes look real good, very uniform in size and shape. Have to admit the WM isn't quite that nice in the quality of the chips, tend to get a long of "long slices" out of it.)
@GoodWorksTractors
@GoodWorksTractors Год назад
I'm steering away from Made in China whenever possible. The Wallenstein equivalent (Made in Canada) chipper setup like that Woodland Mills is 4x the cost.
@freecycling6687
@freecycling6687 Год назад
@@GoodWorksTractors Yep, totally agree with that goal. Sometimes, as an individual, it's just not feasible. (And based on my own experience with WM, they're not just an importer that's passing through the "stuff" they're importing - their product support has been exceptional, and their documentation is accurate and comprehensive.)

Doesn't look bad. Looks like the chute could be taller and swivel so the trailer might be left connected while you're using it. I'll stick with my Vermeer 935. I bought almost 40 acres connected to the land I already had. I wanted to clean some of the atv trails and make a few more. I ended up buying the 6" DK Power that Home Depot sales. I do wish it had electric start though. When you start getting long slices it sounds like you need to have your knives sharpened and the knife gap adjusted. I took my Vermeer to a dealer after I bought it for them to do that.

Courtney, it looked like it was kind of a struggle feeding some of those branches through that chipper. Not that it is a bad product, new designs and innovation is a good thing, but for the price point of the Split-Fire, I think I would be opting for a hydraulic in-feed unit, like a Woodland Mills WC46 or WC68, or even a WOODMAXX MX-8600. Keep up the good content!

I would say the only thing I recall struggling with was the length of some of the brush. I should have trimmed it down. Many folks don't want more complexity. I can see that being a nice feature though too!

Fun video Courtney! I really like the vertical design and the speed increase due to the gearbox and belt drive combination. I have a few suggestions for Split-Fire... Create an on-board docking point so you can remove the chute and park it elsewhere on the machine for transport. Make the chute a little taller. Increase the ability to tilt the deflector downward more. There's nothing much more satisfying than feeding a wood chipper like that! In my case though, it only creates another material to dispose of. Burning the brush leaves a small pile of ash and I'm done with the cleanup. Would be great for people who have a use for the mulch! Thanks for sharing!

Definitely looks like the more hp fit the needs of eating the larger diameter pieces! One reason why I up graded to a L3902. I’ve been debating on buying a PTO powered chipper but I don’t do a lot of that often….at times I’ll cut a tree down or pull some bushes on one of my properties and would be so much easier getting rid of the waste vs burning it all.

If you mounted a bracket on each side of the sidewalls, these could support a 24 inch high piece of sheeting. Start with the brackets close to the chipper, then slide the brackets and sheet away from the chipper as the trailer fills up. The sheeting would deflect the chips into the trailer.

Looks like an interesting design moving the cutting wheel like they did. I like the emergency shut off that you can wire in to your tractor. I do have to say when compared to a unit like my Woodland Mills chipper with hydraulic feed, there is absolutely no comparison. I don't have to lift pieces of wood over my head to get them in the hopper, pieces of wood can't get sucked in too fast and bog down the tractor, the moment a piece of wood is caught by the infeed roller my hands are off and away from any danger, it has controllable variable feed speed and I can control the direction of the feed from the end of the poppers shoot in case of loading something too big or awkward. The discharge shoot can rotate 360° and is mounted higher to be able to get into higher trailers or trucks.

I have the Woodland Mills WC68. This looks like a decent tool but the WC68 is much easier to use. A lot of the stuff you had to stay there and feed would have just been drawn in by the WC68. The infeed is adjustable so it doesn't bog down the tractor motor. The discharge chute on the WC68 is higher and adjustable so I could have been directed much more easily into your trailer and it doesn't need to be removed to move the unit. BTW I really like your trailer.

When we bought our current home on 30 acres years ago I looked around the property and thought boy am I gonna need a chipper....so I went out and bought a very expensive gas powered chipper. Can't you burn on your property he asked...Beats me I said....So I found out burning was legal in the spring and fall...so we found a good place on the property where we could safely burn and burn as needed.....🔥🔥🔥

"Manuals? We don't need no steenkin' manuals!" That's a really nice chipper/shredder. I can see why they would be concerned with theft. You put some pretty big wood through there. I think, in your case at least, the discharge chute could be about 6 inches taller and the final piece able to angle down more. I wonder if a flap (rubber), over the discharge might help reduce the loss over the sides/ends of the trailer. As you mentioned, for the average property owner this would be great as a rental piece and not all that practical to own.

Hint on hooking up the remote kill switch. Many small tractors Y with a diode the seat switch and the other safeties (clutch, shift lever, etc). So to kill both circuits in one place you need to be past the Y to kill power to the fuel solenoid. Another option to kill both circuits is power from the fuse block side of both circuits. Would want to kill both in case the seat switch was stuck on.

It's a fine machine for sure, and very well made by quality people in Canada. I think it also takes in things that my Woodland Mills WC46 could not, using an equivalent powered tractor. The Woodland is designed and delivered to market by a similar Canadian company, with its Chinese manufacturing plant delivering to their designed quality level and price point. Watching this demo, I think the Split-Fire has a few differences you may want to consider. The hydraulic feed on mine is a game changer. You simply do not have to do the handling, cajoling and pushing that Courtney does frequently during this demonstration. The Woodland feed chute is horizontal - dramatically easier to use and navigate than the vertical chute, I believe. And, the Split-Fire discharge chute is not adequate. It should be taller to work correctly with a trailer; otherwise, that is a major functionality miss. The Split-Fire and Woodland (and others I'm sure) are well designed but each has pros and cons at a given price point and overall quality level. My opinions only of course, if you find that useful in your own comparisons.

From the video that company looks to be top notch quality, I "wood" suggest maybe a 3pt wood chunker like in Europe. Hard to find in the states, I do love my chipper, but a wood chunker would be nice to have. Once again keep the videos coming.

@@GoodWorksTractors agreed. Interesting indeed. That looks likes it would be good for wood burning stoves. Good burning size for them. I guess the ultimate would be to have a "wood chunker" feeding your spit fire "wood chipper"

That’s kinda funny. Secure them cause they’re so sought after. Ha! The only Split Fire I ever heard of until now is Split fire Spark Plugs. Hey, just a thought you can take as you like. Turn your trailer around like you were to hook it up but turn the jack down so the rear raises up. That way the chips should hit the tail gate and won’t fly over the top edge as much. A question about the Chipper. If the chipper somehow jams up and kills the tractor is there any access points to open up to un-jam it while out in the field?

Now I want a chipper! I’m not sure why people take the time to chip instead of just burning a big pile tho? Won’t the chips eventually just turn into mud on the trail ?

Did you try leaving the trailer attached and see if you could chip direct. I understand removing the chute to clear the tongue while turning.

This chipper sounds different to other PTO powered chippers. Most probably the cutting disk causes this higher pitched whine. That is interesting.

The Summit TX25 was 25HP, so you'd be a little lower yet. They do show it on a BX2370 which is pretty similar to the 1023e. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9KjGDFgrCi4.html

Many, but not all, models have a procedure to operate the rear PTO without an operator. Might find the sequence in your manual or you could have a model without that feature.

I like would like to see that with a shredder, like my Wallenstein BXM32. While clearing for my house I had a lot of leaves to shred up. Can't do that with a chipper. How does that chipper do with small sticks? I got a lot of small sticks that just went through the chipper part intact, but when they go through the shredder, not much left of them...

It could use an autofeed, but it takes those limby pieces pretty good. Nice chips! But being that close to the limbs all day will beat you to death. And It really wants a 40-50hp tractor.

Courtney. I usually don't have much negative to say about your video's. You work very hard and ALWAYS produce a quality and informative product for your viewers. However I can't believe the incredibly small diameter your limited to with this chipper that you have chosen here. The brands that you mentioned in addition to a number of others that shall remain unnamed will chip up to 6 to 8" depending on model. Those that I have used are also competitive in price to the Split Fire and will work on larger material and are quality engineered in addition. Just Saying. Other than that my you and your family have a Merry Christmas ans Happy New Year !!!!
