I like to see the young man following dad around, learning the things he will be able to put to good use when he gets older; and, watching your daughter helping mom in the kitchen with the butter-making and other things just gives me a good reason to smile. You folks are what America is all about, and I love watching your videos to remind me that life isn't necessarily all about spending money...rather, it's about spending time. It brings back great memories of when I was younger and would spend time with my grandparents, watching (mostly) them do these same things.

Back in the 70s, we would sell an enormous amount of eggs from chickens, ducks and turkeys to everybody. I had a radio flyer wagon that we'd load up with eggs several times a week and always come back home without any left. A man stopped me one day and asked where I got all them eggs, so I says, from chickens. The man laughed and asked if it was our chickens, so I says yes we didn't steal them. So he laughs again and says would we be willing to sell some manure, so I says, you've gotta ask daddy, but I'm sure he would. We didn't know what price to put on it, so whilst daddy was trying to think of a price, the man says he'd give a dollar for every gallon, so daddy says sold. Word got around quick, and we were selling manure as quick as the chickens could produce it. But just like with anything else, you've always got some knuckleheads out there, and folks were complaining that the manure burnt their plants. Weren't our fault.

My Grandmother would only have a jersey cow cause she said that they made the best butter, and she made butter from the time I was a little boy till she got so old that she couldn’t get to the barn. She also sold eggs, and I remember she would put it in a plastic 1lb bowl and sell it for a dollar. I grew up eating eggs and butter and drinking buttermilk.

I use maple leaves every year for my mulch cover my potato beds I leave my potatoes in the ground all year only dig what I want out of them and then come spring I turn it over with the Maple leaves in it take out what potatoes are left and leave the little potatoes in the ground to seed for the following year I hardly ever buy seed potatoes because there's so many small little baby potatoes in there that grow the following year works out pretty good i've only lost one potato last year that went wrought in the ground over the winter mind you the lowest temperatures we get it'll maybe minus 10 And my potato gardens are quite grovely so the potatoes don't rot

Another option is find a farmers market, and ask the vendors there if they sell plants. thats (from the lady that runs the market) where i get probably 80% of my garden plants. Green house locations is great.. i fill in what i need (other 20%) from a local green house.

You should always wear a mask when working in a chicken coop, or around chicken manure that throws up dust, like yours did. That dust, if inhaled, can cause a sickness called Histoplasmosis, a lung disease that can permanently damage your lungs. My oldest son, out of my 4 children who cleaned the chicken coop, for the only 3 years we had chickens, got the histoplasmosis, and ended up with lower left lobe lung damage, that is permanent. We didn't know it could happen, at the time, so I try to spread the word, that protection is important, when working with chicken coop manure. To avoid the dust, if the manure is dry, spray it down with water, before removing, and ALWAYS wear a good mask, even when you think your coop is well ventilated.
