There's a Reason Why Only Great Golfers Swing Like This

How would you like to have a golf swing that's simple and powerful? Ben Hogan shows us how to do that in this golf tip. The top of backswing position gets your downswing into a position where great ball striking happens automatically. The way you set the club at the top is like the start of your downswing - when you set it correctly, the downswing is easier. When you set it incorrectly, the downswing creates ball striking problems like hitting slices, behind the ball, pulls, pushes (basically, everything that's undesirable).
Legendary ball striker Ben Hogan shows us that if we set the club like he did in his backswing, you can play some really great golf. By learning to shallow the club (instead of going steep) you will set yourself up for the best chance to make solid contact. This is one of the best golf swing moves you can make to improve your game instantly.

I am Tom Saguto, PGA Member and founder of SagutoGolf. Thank you for visiting my instructional page where you can find how to get on the fast track to improving your golfing abilities. Whether you are a seasoned golfing veteran looking for a quick swing tune-up after an on-course emergency, or a beginner just looking to get the most out of your golfing experience, I am here to help you achieve your golfing goals.
My mission as your swing doctor is simple, to help you maximize your enjoyment in game of golf. Because, let’s face it, golf is a hard game.
My philosophy is wholly based on the student having a fun, meaningful experience in a frustrating and complicated game where potential lifelong golfers either quit because it is too difficult or that they experience some form of swing-related pain or discomfort. I mitigate these problems by focusing entirely on the student’s needs and goals while teaching a golf swing method that ultimately takes stress off of the common pain areas of the swing.

I just want to thank you for the tips you've given me. I have been driving the ball 300 yrds and easily 280 when I miss hit on the clubface. All because of you showing me how to actually turn my hips. I never knew how to actually engage the hips and it took me til 35 years old and over 25 years of golf to figure it out. You don't understand how satisfying it feels to unlock that after so many years of constant 250 yrd drives. I'm a decent golfer with a 6 handicap and man does it feel good to know I can still advance skill wise. I finally feel like I'm compressing the ball on irons too. It's so simple and feels effortless that it makes me want to cry 😭haha! Now I just need to work on my inside 100 yrd shots and I'm golden! Thank you, Mr. Saguto!!

Nice hammock! Even Hogan looks like his weight stays forward. It does make the swing less stressful on an old body!
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 2 года назад
LOL! Glad you like my Pawleys Island Hammock!! Mr. Hogan had a brief shift in pressure to his rear leg before getting into his front side at the top of his backswing, and from there he never left the from side. While we have some tolerances built in to this swing system for such individual idiosyncrasies, in general we start with our weight forward (generally 55/45 for the short and mid irons, 60/40 for the longer clubs), gradually add more forward weight to the top (70/30), 80/20 halfway down, 90/10 impact, and 95/5 finish, and the result is a centered, low-maintenance, body-friendly, consistent, and tremendously powerful swing. The body-friendly features of this swing are well-supported by the fact that significant number of my students are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. I love the Ben Hogan series, glad to see it back. I’m reading his book now and he mentioned something about pre-setting the knees to help the hips move. Maybe that would be a great future video if you have not done that already!
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 2 года назад
Glad you enjoyed the latest installment! If you are referring to the Five Lessons book and setting the knees so they are both kicked inward, then know that this goes against what I teach in this swing system. The inward knees facilitate a shift into the trail side and place resistance against the hip turn. Here we flare both feet and knees outward. This is supportive of a resistance-free, body-friendly 45-degree hip turn that then enables the shoulders to turn 45 degrees without any strain or tension. It also helps us with keeping our weight forward throughout the swing rather than shifting. There's a lot of great information in the Five Lessons book, but there have also been many misinterpretations that have led numerous golfers - and their ball flight - astray. I do my best to take what Mr. Hogan conveys in the book as his "feels", apply it to the reality of what he actually did in his swing, and translate it into something we all can learn well from, because if we can get Hogan right there are tremendously effective swing keys to be garnered!! For example, even though he would kick his trail knee inward at address as his trigger move, it worked back to its original position in the takeaway and the trail leg also straightened and did not remain flexed and rigid, meaning that he didn't fight his body to make that 45 -degree hip turn. TS

Yes, excellent lesson. I like the swing trainer, also. It is very notable how Hogan lays the club further off to the left, in the start of his downswing. And, he does this by reducing the separation of his arms. The left side of his right forearm moves towards his left arm. It is very notable, also, how Hogan turned his right clavicle towards the target, in the hitting area. And, it may be that we won't feel the need to chop down from the top if we do little swings to get a feel for turning the clavicle towards the target, in the hitting area. But, one thing i like about your swing; especially, is that you don't cock your wrists from the moment the left side of your right forearm faces straight in front of you, in the backswing. And, this makes for a very good turn. So, there is plenty for the viewer to actually copy from your swing.

@@jasonversetti6472 I think one needs space for the hands to come through in order to stay low. So try to start the down swing with hips and keep them opening and turning. You can try giving the hips a better chance to lead the way by slowing down the hands/arms at the beginning of the down swing. Maybe tell your self that you want the hips to move twice a fast as the hands, try that "feel" and make adjustments from there. (Hand path and distance from the ball could be part of it. Or flipping will get the club head going too early which will make you need to stand. Maybe try an analysis if you hit a wall. I do a lot of trial and tweaking. I'm glad you're enjoying the content! The dreaded "S's" can be the result of a variety of actions: 1) You may be too steep on the downswing and thereby exposing the hosel to the ball; 2) Conversely, your downswing path may be too in to out; 3) You may be rolling the face open during the backswing; 4) The wrists may not be hinging properly; 5) You are setting up with the ball positioned at the heel of the club; 6) More... There has been quite a bit of dialogue in the Members' Forum of my online school on the topic of how to transport "Ranger Rick" to the golf course. We all experience that! All I can tell you is that it is part of the process, and as your practice performance becomes more and more consistent, then it's just a function of time in terms of when/how that will translate itself to the pressures and challenges of actual play. As confidence in your swing grows you should find more and more that you are playing "golf" instead of "golf swing" on the course, at which point your mechanical thoughts will be reduced to one or two at the most, and you will be nearly entirely focused on your target and not your swing. An excellent book that may help you with this is "Fearless Golf: Conquering the Mental Game" by Dr. Gio Valiante. Another book that I like is "Play Your Best Golf Now" by Lynn Marriott & Pia Nilsson. In addition to these resources, it’s a good idea to have a reliable “default swing” that you can dial up mid-round when you sense that you are beginning to leak some oil. Many of my members use the swing provided by what we refer to as "Drill 2.8", which is actually the full swing minus just a couple of power accumulators. In fact, one member played five consecutive rounds using just 2.8 and he shot in the 70’s each time! (By the way, if you're not already there I'd love to see you in the online school and participating regularly in the highly supportive SagutoGolf Community that is growing into something quite special in our Forum. Glad you enjoyed it!! I really don't think in terms of any particular muscle groups while executing this very body-friendly and powerful motion. Beyond that, my own personal "feels" are not relevant because they are unique to me. Beyond that, they change regularly - sometimes it's the lead arm, sometimes it's the trail arm, other times it's both arms, and even others it's no arms and just shoulders or chest or hips... 😆 This is why I do my best to convey multiple feels or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. However, no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the desired positions, motions, and ball striking results. This is one reason why the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of my online school is so effective, and why so many folks across the globe are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result. The lessons and drills provide the guidelines and set the boundaries, while allowing ample leeway for each individual golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness. I hope you're enjoying the school, Christopher! By the way, have you joined the SagutoGolf Community Forum (which is included in your online school membership) yet and begun engaging with other golfers in the school? If you've not already done so it only takes a minute or two to enroll - just go to your “My Courses” screen and you’ll see a link to get started. Once signed in you’ll be able to access in this fun and tremendously supportive community and participate in the ongoing great dialogue on a variety of swing- and game-related topics. You can start discussions, contribute to existing threads, post accomplishments and specific swing questions, make some new friends, and just share in the common bond and banter of golfers from around the world seeking to improve their games and help others to do the same. I monitor the forum and participate as well. I really think you will enjoy it!! As for what Moe Norman did particularly well...you mean aside from being one of the greatest ball strikers the game has ever known??... 😆😆 I am aware that his swing also inspired a particular style of instruction. There are some shared features with S&T - particularly the one plane motion - and while some have had success deploying a "hybrid" version of the two swing methods (which, of course, I certainly do not discourage if they are pleased with the results), it's not something I would typically teach as it could lead to confusion. I hope to see you in the forum! Tom

@SagutoGolf

I've personally used the Swing Caddie SC100 for several years and have found it to be reliable, easy to use, sufficiently accurate, and budget-friendly. Definitely suitable for the golfer who wishes to dial in club yardages, swing speed, and smash factor, but it's certainly not going to provide all the professional launch monitor data, graphics, etc.

Tom, ok so no vertical club in the backswing, the butt of the club on the inside of the ball and outside the ball in the downswing..I think the loop at the top is hard.

One plane back and through, Henrik. There is no need to lift it independently in the backswing and then try to drop it that "slot" in the downswing. Here is a lesson video that should further explain this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0IxI_qmaF_A.html And by the way, here's a link to my FREE mini-course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” in case you’re interested in learning about the swing system I teach in a more structured manner: go.saguto.golf/ Tom

I appreciate your interest, James. I had phased out all in-person instruction awhile back so I could dedicate more time to my online school. I do, however, offer virtual private lessons and coaching as they are instrumental to the progress of my school's members. These are highly effective - as much or perhaps even more so than in-person based on the results and dramatic improvement my students are experiencing - and they can be done for any member from anywhere around the globe. You may learn more about these options here: saguto.golf/lessons As for the online school, thousands of men and women from across the globe spanning all age ranges and talent levels are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result, and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews And for a really good starting point to get you on the proper path towards consistently crispy ball striking bliss, here is a link to my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” where you can learn some key aspects of the swing system I teach in a more structured manner: go.saguto.golf/ Thanks! But isn't the angle different on the wedges vs the 4 iron?
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 2 года назад
There are naturally occurring plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. Still, it's essentially the same swing. For example, here is a video of Stack and Tilt co-founder Mike Bennett hitting the driver: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7fmtzyH3rsA.html. It looks very similar to his iron swing, right?: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SLjwU_1Cc7o.html

what happens when you bend your left arm
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 2 года назад
The lead arm is the radius of our inclined swing circle, Darrell. If it breaks down then we risk no longer having a circle, consistency can suffer, and the tremendous power that comes from swinging in a circle can be lost. The key here is get to - but not go beyond - your body's natural stopping point in the backswing where the tilting, turning, and extending motions are complete, the lead arm has crossed the chest 45 degrees, and the wrists are properly set (preferably with a flat or slightly bowed lead wrist). This is the point where if we were to try to go any further any or all of the following will occur: 1) the lead arm will bend and/or lift 2) the wrists will break down 3) the lead knee will kick inward towards the trail side 4) the lead shoulder will level out and lose its orientation towards the ball 5) weight will shift into the trail side and bring the low point back with it, resulting in inconsistent contact and unpredictable ball flight. 6) you'll "chicken wing" and/or flip through impact 7) pain, discomfort, and/or possible injury We don't need to try to get to "parallel" with this swing, and fighting your body in an attempt to do so will result in some combination of the above issues. If you execute this swing properly you will have created width and plenty of distance for that club to travel by taking it in deep, and that will enable you to harness the tremendous power source known as "angular momentum". Here's a link to my FREE mini-course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” in case you’re interested in learning about the swing system I teach in a more structured manner: go.saguto.golf/ TS

Do you keep your head center over the ball while hitting a Driver? @@SagutoGolf

The ball position with the driver is more forward - typically even with the inside of my lead heel. As such my head would not be centered over the ball.

I thought when clubhead goes back, you should be Abel to drop the club and it falls in between your shoulders.
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 2 года назад
Not in this swing system, Charlotte, because there is no disconnected, independent lifting of the arms and club. Instead, we simply take it back and through on the same plane, with the lead arm matching the tilted shoulder line and the hands deep behind the trail shoulder at the top. This automatically puts us "in the slot" while also enabling us to take full advantage of the tremendous power source known as "angular momentum". If you watch the best players in the world on TV you will notice a significant percentage of them achieve this top-of-backswing position. Here is a lesson on the matching planes: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0IxI_qmaF_A.html And here's a link to my FREE mini-course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” in case you’re interested in learning about the swing system I teach in a more structured manner: go.saguto.golf/ Tom

My daughter is stacking and tilting crushes the ball but she releases early doesn’t maintain the angle long enough in the downswing. Could the main culprit be that she doesn’t make a good enough lateral shift to start the backswing? Her back heel comes up about 6 inches into the start of the downswing and her right knee moves straight forward a little.
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 2 года назад
She may benefit from this lesson on the proper trail foot action in the downswing, Christopher: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xQAY78M7hMs.html And here's another on lag: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-45DI0IKVroc.html There could be other causes for early extension/casting as well, and the online school is the place for the diagnostic videos and specific fixes. Although I agree with what you are saying.... there is (in my opinion) an order of importance for good ball striking / compression. #1 you have to make sure you DO NOT MOVE YOUR HEAD!!!!!!!!!! keeping your head still during the entire swing is the ABSOLUTELY MOST IMPORTANT THING.... #2 Keeping the lead arm LOCKED, you have to have the elbow locked straight through the ball strike. #3 is what you are talking about in this video... Keeping the backswing consistent, the one thing you missed in this video is looking at Hogan's right elbow, it's TUCKED IN DURING THE ENTIRE SWING. You cannot let your back arm fly away, it MUST STAY CLOSE TO YOUR BODY!! #4 DO NOT LOSE YOUR BALANCE, you MUST stay on your lead foot, DO NOT lift up your lead heal!!! you cannot end up falling back or end up on your away foot .. THERE YOU GO!!!
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 2 года назад
Yes. 1) I know you saw my recent episode featuring Jack's vital tip regarding the steady head. 2) I have multiple lessons on keeping the lead arm straight as that is the radius of our swing circle. 3) Hogan's "Magic Elbow" episode: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iL9WmQ7KsmE.html 4) I have numerous lesson videos on keeping the weight forward. Here's just one example: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FmdHyl6OBIs.html Your enthusiasm and desire to help others is well noted and appreciated. Please just know that I cannot teach all critical elements of the swing in one YT video while keeping it digestible in terms of content and length. This is why I regularly say it is important to understand that the videos, lessons, and drills on this free channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, feels, and/or common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. They are certainly not intended to be taken as a comprehensive, sequential learning platform like the structured curriculum of my online school, which I strongly recommend to anyone who truly wishes to get on the proper path towards owning this swing. Thanks, Tom

Odd....my pro wants me to have a vertical shaft on the backswing. You want it laid off. Go figure.
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 2 года назад
I don't say I want it laid off, Bill. Because there is no disconnected, independent vertical lifting of the club, if we maintain our connections and execute the motions properly then the lead arm will match the tilted shoulder plane at the top with the hands deep behind the trail shoulder. It's a one plane motion, and you will notice plenty of players on Tour swinging this way. What your pro is teaching sounds like a two-plane swing. That's fine if it serves you well; just understand that there are distinct differences between that swing method and the system that I teach.
