I´m sorry, I mean, I have not seen the whole film yet, but based on this video, all I´ve seen from him more made me laughing rather than take him seriously or admiring his acting skills...Then again, I never saw any film with Daniel Day Lewis, I think. It´s just not the type of movie, I tend to enjoy, I´ve come to the same judgement for There Will Be Blood right now.....
@RAAM90

@@chanceneck8072 i respect your opinion but, by all means, watch the movie and you'll understand the context of his performance. if his performance made you laugh, let me tell you that PTA's films tend to get darkly comical. However, if you're interested in great acting, DDL is considered one of the best actors today. Watch any of DDL's movies. My Beautiful Laundrette, My Left Foot, Age of Innocence, The Last of the Mohicans, In the Name of the Father, Gangs of New York, There Will Be Blood, Lincoln, Phantom Thread. if you grab his characters and put them in the same room, you can easily tell them apart. Such a shame he's retired now.

In an interview with Daniel Day Lewis about this film, he says that he thought that the ending where he sends away his son, feels like a way to set his son free from the burden of being Plainviews son. He still has some humanity left in him, and knows that, although this will hurt his son, it will be a better life for him to be with his wife alone, than be a son of Plainview. I really like to see it this way.

@16:40 i just realized how in a scene like this you'd expect something a lot more heart warming and intimate, a close up of the father and son reuniting and embracing each other. Instead we have this really distant shot void of emotion. Not only that but the reason for the shot being so distant is to insure that the pipeline is visible running through the middle of this moment.

I worked in the oilfield for several years so I know what he meant by that line. What Daniel's character is talking about there is when you drill, you can drill not just vertically but you can drill horizontally out into other people's land. This is common now and tracked but back then most wells were vertical and there was no way to track where a well ended up at the end. He figured out a way to slowly drill horizontal onto the land that wasn't his and got all the oil from that land, therefore that land was dry and had no value anymore.

@@BrandonLikesMovies The movie is based on Upton Sinclair's "Oil". Ive read his other famous work "The Jungle". Sinclair was basically a socialist and exposed the horrible lives of people during the Industrial Revolution. What capitalism does to a society, how it degrades people , and how it turns some people into monsters with no empathy especially towards children and women. Teddy Roosevelt, after reading The Jungle, went on a crusade to have child labor laws enacted in the US and meat and food laws which would eventually turn into OSHA and the FDA. You should watch all of Daniel Day Lewis' movies, there are not many and all oscar caliber. BTW, he has now retired from acting. in movies. "The Bounty". "Last of the Mohicans", "My left Foot" , "Age of Innocence", "In the name of the Father", "The crucible". "The boxer", "gangs of new york", "Phantom Thread" was his last movie from 2017. He says he is now retired. Paul Thomas Anderson also directed that film. It was a very slow burn outside of the box love story..lol It was great. If want to watch a fast paced almost action movie .. @@itubeutubewealltube1 How is capitalism not also degrading towards men, actually more so than women and children, as men are force to serve in the military and fight, kill and die? There's nothing more degrading than being enslaved into the military to be part of a killing machine.
@itubeutubewealltube1
@itubeutubewealltube1 4 года назад
@@language-n-learning are you dumb? Men are no longer "forced" to serve in the military. It is completely volunteer. If you are talking about the draft, in the United States, then yes, only men are forced to sign up. The draft has not been used for 50 years. But the draft will be changed soon , I am sure of it. Most countries draft both women and men now.
@language-n-learning
@language-n-learning 4 года назад
@@itubeutubewealltube1 Ad hominem. Throughout history, most countries have forced (no quotes) men to serve in the military. If they refused they were put into (slave) labor camps, which happened in the US during WWII (and no women were put in those camps), or were put in jail unless they fled to Canada, which happened during the Vietnam War (and no women had to choose between war, Canada and jail. And American men still have register with the military when they turn 18 or they could be sent to jail for 5 years, be fined $250,000 and be barred from government jobs and loans for life. Women are not treated like that. It's not true that "most countries draft both women and men now". BS. What countries other than Israel draft women? And Israel requires less time and less dangerous duty for women. Your premise that society has "no empathy towards women and children" is vacuous. Society operates on the principle of "women and children first." Men are treated as disposable objects. I'm ready for your next ad hominen comment. Cheers.

Okay, okay, okay! I’m not seeing any love in these comments for Daniel Day Lewis’ very first Oscar winning performance in “My Left Foot.” He is MESMERIZING in it!! Based on a true story, he plays an Irishman with Cerebral Palsy who happens to also be a talented painter - however, due to his disease, he lacks proper control in his upper body so he is forced to paint by placing the paintbrush between the toes of his left foot. As a healthcare professional of many years, I can vouch for how physiologically accurate his rendition is - every physical tic and mannerism is spot on. Also, most characters of this type are portrayed as pathetic and/or noble figures to feel sorry for. But not in this case. Daniel Day Lewis plays this character with so much piss n’ vinegar, we cannot help but glimpse his whole humanity, warts and all. All three of his Oscar winning performances show off his amazing range: “My Left Foot” “There Will Be Blood” “Lincoln” Also nominated for: “In the Name of the Father” “Gangs of New York” “Phantom Thread” But his performance in “My Left Foot” is one for all time. Great reaction. Daniel Day Lewis is an amazing actor. His conversation with his "brother" gives me chills every time I see it. One of the best monologues I've ever seen. His line where he says, "I just want to make enough money so I can get away from everyone" is incredible. An underappreciated movie if I've ever seen one. A lot of people thought it was boring. Love your reactions, my man!

I think some movies aren't meant to be hyper-analyzed. There just meant to be taken in. This is one of those films, to me. After I saw it the first time, it left me with a surreal euphoric feeling. Like my emotions had been put through the wringer, but in the best possible way. Day-Lewis' performance is transfixing. I rank it as his best ever, which is saying a whole hell of a lot. I mean this man has been incredible in every roll he's ever taken. My Left Foot, The Crucible, Lincoln, In the Name of the Father, The Last of the Mohicans, Sense and Sensibility, Gangs of New York etc. Yet still, this was his pinnacle performance in my eyes. And the film on a whole just swims along, ebbing back and forth between calm determination and uncontrolled rage. I love it so much. If you weren't left with a similar feeling, that's fine. I say leave it at that, then. No degree of reading up, analysis and looking for hidden meaning can substitute for a genuine, initial feeling

Probably the overall best American film of the 2000s, with the overall best performance, one of the most beautifully shot and scored...and what might be the most impressive part of it is that as perfect as DDL is, Paul Dano absolutely keeps up with him the whole way. The start of this movie is so important. It gives the viewer, within 20 mins who Daniel Plainview is. This movie was so good, that even through I could see where Daniel's character arch was going (My first though when H.W. real father died, was that Daniel's first though was "How can I use this thing to my advantage") I was transfixed. Such a good character study, masterclass film making.

You're so invested in the movie you're watching, and really pay careful attention to what's going on, which makes your analysis so thoughtful and interesting to listen to once the movie is over. Daniel Day-Lewis is one of the great actors to ever perform, and the cold, calculated ferocity in his performance here is brilliant. As others have said, Last of the Mohicans and Gangs of New York are spectacular. Paul Thomas Anderson is one of my favorite directors. I'd love to see your reaction to Magnolia. Boogie Nights put Anderson on the map, and Magnolia put him into the ranks of the great directors of his generation. The writing, directing, cinematography and music are extraordinary. Also, Tom Cruise gives the performance of his career in it. Please keep up the great work. Your channel is phenomenal.

Such a contrast between No Country and this in terms of opening sequences, and both done so effectively. No Country establishes their characters well with dialogue, and then their actions convey so much about them to the audience. Whereas in this, we understand a great deal about Daniel from the speechless first ten minutes (or so). He's a worker. He's gotten his hands very dirty, he's seen some shit, he's largely unaffected by setback, stubborn, head-strong, confident and persistent, and mayyybe a sociopath. Then his opening dialogue carries that much more weight. Love it. Brilliant. Keep reacting to my favorite movies and you're going to become my favorite.

You cant really relax, even during the "happy" parts becouse you know its going to shit soon but not in the way you expect it. The relationship between the two main characters are so unsetteling, you can just feel it. And that acting .. they are both amazing but DDL is just a beast. Love that guy! Cinematagrophy is on poing and the music is so dreadful. Just like you, i was on the edge of my seat the whole time, descpite this being such a low key movie about a guy drilling for oil.
