We replaced the Thermostat on my brothers 2009 Chevy Aveo. His car was also giving error codes P0128 and P2128 for the thermostat and cooling system. Coolant is toxic and sweet smelling so it is important to properly capture and dispose of the waist coolant or animals may ingest it which will likely kill them.
After draining the system and removing the sensor wires we removed the hose on the thermostat housing. The housing is held on with Torx head bolts that require an external E socket, or Torx Star Bit Female socket. The old housing was corroded and disgusting. The new and old thermostat housings come with an O-ring and the thermostat built in.
The new thermostat went on without a hitch and then it was just a matter of reconnecting the hose and wires. When filling the radiator reservoir its important to remember to bleed the air out of the system. To this effect I always squeeze the large radiator hose several times when filling and bleeding.
To bleed the system we started the car with the radiator cap off. During this process I also cycled the large hose while monitoring the system. I didn't require much more 50/50 coolant to top off the reservoir. After finishing and cleaning up we cleared the codes with my OBD-II Code Scanner.
The whole process took us about half an hour to 45 minutes, even with my son playing with my tools in the mean time. We didn't have any major issues and the car is running much better after the replacement.
