These Dutch compound words sound funny to foreigners! (and not always logical) 

Boodschap = Message Boodschappen = Groceries Grote Boodschap = Taking a dump Yup... makes perfect sense. 🤣

Funny that they apparently did't realize what the name "hippopotamus" means.. hippo=horse, potamus=river :-D Our name for it is just a bit more specific: not a horse from just any river, we know it from the Nile river.

When you think about it, we Dutchies don't make up difficult names for stuff, we just say how things are. One more funny word is 'stinkdier', which means 'skunk'. 'Dier' means 'animal' in Dutch, and 'stink'... I bet you guys figured that one out by now.

"Paddenstoelen" could appear in less then a day and they had these strange shapes, because of this humans thought they were related to magic and witchcraft. A "pad" was the companion of a witch and a "paddenstoel" was the resting place for that "pad". You also have the ones growing on the bark of trees. They're called "elfenbankje" (fairycouch).

The word "schap" has nothing to do with sheep.

My favourite has to be "luipaard" (leopard), which would translate to "lazy horse". On a related note, the Dutch word for cheetah is "jachtluipaard", which would translate to "hunting lazy horse".

2:55 bod, schaap, boodschap, boodschappen, all different meanings. Jup. Long or short a's and o's etc matter. (Btw: 'bot' is again another word, meaning bone) A single boodschap kan mean 'shopping for one item'. But it doubles as 'sending someone with a message'. You could send a messenger with different 'boodschappen', but that usage is extremely rare in practice. 'bot' and 'boot' are examples of when o or oo matters: 'boot' means 'boat', bot means 'bone', totally different meanings, AND pronunciations. Same with schap (a single plank that displays things to buy in a store), schappen (all the planks displaying things to buy in a store) and schaap (one sheep)/schapen (multiple sheep, say schaapen). The aa is then abbreviated: schaapen is not correct Dutch: if the aa or oo etc is ending the syllable, it gets abbreviated. Schaa-pen (the second a is superfluous, we know it is aa because it ends the syllable) becomes Scha-pen. Schap-pen has a short a. Take 'keren' or 'leren'. Both have a long ee, that is not displayed, because ke-ren and le-ren both assume you know that because it ends the syllable: it has to be spoken long. Or take knaken and knakken. Knaken are old 2.5 guilder coins (use to be the biggest amount of money on a coin). It still is used sometimes as in 'Ik heb daar geen knaken voor' (i dont have the money for it). Kna-ken is pronounced knaaken, because of the syllable rule. Knak (pop, as in popping your fingers, or break, as in breaking a wooden twig) has a short a. Knak-ken is also pronounced with short a: the ak ending of the syllable shows it is not an abbreviation of aa. It is one of the confusing aspects of our language for foreigners.

Boodschap is related to the German word "Botschaft" which means "Embassy". Function is to bring the wishes over from somebody else. So the Dutch word "boodschappen" comes from the time that servants went to the food or cloth market to get what their masters wished.

But toadstool is another word for mushroom in english so it isn't too strange. It's used in a lot of nursery rhymes, although I don't think it is used much nowadays, or if it is used in American English.

I don't think they are funny, it's quite normal (as real polyglots). Lots of Chinese nouns are compounded like this but in a much briefer way, e.g. Hippopotamus in Chinese, if you dissect it directly, it's "river河 horse马". Also, compound words are much better than never inventing a new word, but only prolonging it as a phrase! A parking, in French there're two ways to say: 1) "parking" in French accent, 2) "parc de stationnement".. because "stationner" is the verb "park"... Originally l'académie française wanted to let people say "le courrier électronique" (see how fucking long is this??) instead of "email", but thank god nobody gave a shit haha.

Schap in boodschappen is not related to schaap but to schap. A schap is more like a shelf.

Mushroom is also a little bit crazy. Mush like mushy and you have a room

Boodschappen isn't really a compound word though. It's based on "bode" and the postfix "-schap" (also in wetenschap etc). A bode was someone who was a messenger/envoy or maybe carrier - someone who you send around to get or bring stuff. The postfix -schap means "as done by someone". So a "boodschap" is 'the thing done by an enboy'. And in the 17th century it was very normal for rich people to get someone to get food for them from the markets and send to different town markeets to get the right stuff. Thus the original of the word. It's not a compound though, not sure how it got in this clip as it would only confuse people.

The guy from Palestine needs to be helped a bit. Paddenstoel = chair for toads. Like in: toads use some big and strong kinds of mushrooms to sit on them. So they use it, as we use a chair. And this bospaddenstoel happens to be 'in het bos' = in the forest. Not that hard to understand. Boodschappen doen = getting groceries. The help that was to get them, wast sent. He or she was a 'bode', someone sent to get things or deliver a message. The second part of the word he wrongly understood as 'schapen' (schapen is plural for schaap, meaning sheep), but it has nothing to do with that word. 'Schap' (with only one 'a') seems to be less clear in its origin. It could be this: in the grocery shop, one has schappen. That means shelves. So the 'bode' is getting things from the 'schappen' = the one who is sent, is getting things from the shelves. So you get boodschappen doen. This might not be the origin though. For the part 'schap' as an ending of a word, could also mean: 'dit wat tot de taak van een bepaalde persoon behoort' = that which is part of the tasks of a certain person. And so you get the word 'boodschapper' which is someone, who was sent to bring a message (and or a thing). In the same way you have 'pleegouder' = foster parent. 'Pleegouderschap' is something like 'being or belonging to being a foster parent'. A Dutch example sentence would be: "Wij hebben gekozen voor het pleegouderschap." Which translates as: "We have chosen to become foster parents". This '-schap' ending just doesn't seem to have an equivolent in the english language? Although 'landschap' = landscape and 'burgerschap' = citizenship. Complicated! Maybe someone knows for sure which explanation it is or even a third one? Personally I tend towards the second one. Nowadays we do the groceries ourselves and do not sent a 'bode' anymore. But the upper class in former times was never seen doing something like that, since it was seen as a task of a servant. Isn't language funny? When you go back in time you can track most of the origins. Well, this is how I understand it. Who knows how many ideas circulate about these words.

bospaddestoel is harder because the mushroom as well as toads partly come from old mythology .. a mushroom is also called a heksenring if grown in certain shapes or elvenbench; toads are mythological the pets of these creatures, but I don't see the issue ... TOAD-STOOL ... the english word comes from the same... even Nintendo knows it

Rule of thumb: If it's one thing, it's one word. (But if it gets really long you can hyphenate)

'Pottekijker' has nothing to do with a 'pot', at least not in modern use. Een pottekijker is someone you'd like to leave, because you feel he/she is invading your privacy. Whatever it is you're doing (by yourself or with others) you do not want 'pottekijkers'

Dutch got a system of prefixes and suffixes and English has far more loanwords. Bood=Offered Boodschap becomes message. That's why the British came up with the idiom Double Dutch. After all I am a British subject but was born in the Netherlands.

The Dutch word for groceries is 'boodschappen'. Schap is shelf, sheep is schaap. Learn to listen before you comment.

"Eiwit" = ei + wit = egg + white. So it's "egg white". Excellent. Except that in the context you found it happens to mean "protein". It was certainly confusing to learn that in the Netherlands many VEGAN products are "rich in egg whites".
