Heyyyyy you only had it a few weeks and you nearly broke it!!! 🤬,it was practically brand new and working 100% when it left the uk!!!,you kiwis must be a bit rough, I was talking to the bloke across the road the other day you know the one who drinks concentrated cordial without water and he said “Jon!!! You should have been a classical violinist or a rocket scientist the way you are with powertools” good shout I said!!, anyway bants aside the 140 is pretty crap in its operation!! It’s no wonder Makita discontinued it after only a few years!! Still the mechanical operation is amazing is amazing but flawed!, I might get round to doing a proper break down of one of these one day, iv currently got 2 in a million pieces and iv forgotten how they go back together!!, you know what I was nearly going to post you a 141!! I found one quite cheap on eBay ( £140 ish) but I couldn’t really afford it I’m afraid!!,I haven’t got round to doing a video about my 141 yet because I’m turning from a 4 function drill to a 7 function drill!!! Watch this space!! Oh and your 140 does come with a lifetime warranty from Jon’s random reviews so if you brick it no worries iv got your back!! Great video tools 🤟🤟

Multimaterial bits are good for drilling flashing over masonry. Standard HSS bit will get killed the instant you punch through.

In Japan, carpenters primarily use an impact driver for all drilling and fastening tasks. The Japanese bit manufacturers like Vessel and Annex make 1/4 impact rated bits for just about every task imaginable. I've used JIS masonry bits in a Hikoki WH18DC and it drills 10mm holes in old concrete pavers with ease.

Being a tool that does "everything", there obviously are some compromises. That said, I just love Makita for also making those oddball tools that are more tailored towards specific situations. This tool for example would be perfect to carry on a boat or on an expedition where taking multiple tools simply is not an option. It also might be appealing as a tool to have in a cabin or so as a "just in case" kinda universal weapon.

I also use technology to comment from Japan. The correct interpretation of P-mode is "Recommended for tightening drill screws (detects load and stops)." Try using the P-mode with a drill screw, a thin steel plate will surely give you a great experience.

Maybe I'm an outlier but I usually have a drill set-up for drilling and an impact set-up for driving when I need to do both tasks in close proximity. It's much faster to swap tools with different bits than to swap different bits in a single tool. And, given that you can have multiple tools at the same cost as this single tool, this one is a hard pass for me and I suspect others.

I bought a dpt141 12 years ago, i use it for all screws and bolts, its great, Doesn't do very well in concrete and most metals but it's decent for wood and aluminum. The most impressive thing about it is how well its lasted, it still runs like new.

This tool is perfect for me. Being a hybrid between a drill and impact. I was considering buying Makita DDF083z but probably buy this. Im too lazy to unwind the drill chuck. I usually use two impacts( one for drilling and the other for driving screwing). Mr Tools saves the day again Subscribed

I have the old style 140 one. Yours is all kinds of broken. As a diy guy, mine is still like new. My selector works fine. Drilling concrete is not great. It is nice to use 1/4" bits and not have the noisy impact driver function all the time. The clutch settings are nice for small screws too. It is however a bit of a chunk. I've moved on to The Festool CXS as it is much smaller and comfortable to use for the types of tasks that I need to do. (Woodworking, electrical, and basic homeowner tasks) I got the CXS 18 also if I want to build a deck or shed, but its overkill for cabinet making. Festool drills have electronic kickback protection. I really hate impact drivers now.

This that even a question, can it replace a drill? The BL version struggles drilling a 10mm hole into steel. It’s good for light stuff.

Why are you against multi material bits? I work as a plumber in the UK, constantly drilling masonry and Bosch's multi construction bits are the best I've found. Predominantly used for brick work, to go through the glaze on porcelain tiles or through ceramic, rarely used for timber if I'm being lazy and need a single hole. Never tried to do metal with them. I think they need to be looked at as masonry bits with some added features and as long as the price is right then they are OK

I had one of the blue four function drills about 18 years ago. It was light years ahead of anything else and the 3Ah batteries did an absolute tonne of work. In the end the gearbox selector completely seized up with grit. My mates did the same.

I used one of those older teal ones and lasted about an hour with it before throwing it across the workshop. clumsy design that just didn’t work well at all. mech gets clogged up with sawdust and the like, making it a pain to switch between anything. just awful. so glad makita didn’t keep developing this idea..

Concentricity was lacking historically in both the bits and the drivers. Hex shanks would be brazed/welded/press fit onto drill bits with little QC. These hex shanks would then be loosely held by quick release chucks in loose tolerance sockets. Both of these issues were fixed with Centrotec, but that's proprietary and expensive. It's taken a long time for manufacturers on both sides of the equation to bring such tolerance scrutiny to their 1/4" products. If Makita gives us a good quad ball bearing quick change chuck on the 40v oil impulse...

These tools are good in concept only. The motor in an impact driver rotates too fast to be used as a drill. It simply will not have enough torque for drilling. Likewise, a drill motor rotates too slow for effective impacting. The tools here try to compromise but fall short for both applications. Too slow for impacting and not powerful enough for drilling. Good video though. Now we know companies sell drill and impact driver kits.for good reason.
