I'm getting back into club building and i recently received my Golfworks catalog in the mail. I have to say the new stuff from Maltby looks top shelf. Some of their designs from the past were a little gimmicky and turned me off to the brand entirely. I honestly can't decide whether to go with the TS1, TS3, or TS1-IMs. They all look great. I can't wait to try them. Wondering how the TS1 stacks up against the TS1-IM. Hard to believe that they both rate so high on the playability scale. I've been away from the game for health reasons and now I'm retired from the military so i concentrate more on my golf game. I once played to a 8hdcp. Probably around a 15 now if im honest. So I sure could use all the forgiveness I can get in a players iron. I can't play GI irons. I just can't score with them and they aren't as fun to play the game with. This season is looking good with these in the bag.

Gabe: I had used the STi series of forgiving irons for several years. I tried a 7i TS3 two months ago ... wow!!! You will pry these out of my cold, dead hands. You can move the ball easily, it feels wonderful when hitting the sweet spot, and still forgiving. I have the Kuro Kage A-flex shafts and GP tour velvet 360 mid-size. Love the clubs!

I have a set of these irons and they will stay in my bag for the rest of the year at least. They are surprisingly forgiving, including the longer clubs. I have never hit a 4 iron so well. Go for a TS4 / TE+ blended set. TS4 / TS3 have different finishes, but the TS4 and TE+ match. TE+ may as well be a TS3, lofts are the same and run around the same MPF. Only difference is offset numbers, where the TE+ is constant and the TS3 is progressive.

@AZstu324 23 дня назад
For specialty wedges, I highly recommend their Max Milled. They are like $60 each. Full face grooves with micro milling. They have a nice shape and come in wide sole and regular sole options. Bonkers spin! I recently switched to them from TaylorMade MG3 TW grind and couldn't be happier. They're so easy to play and look and feel great. A little thicker profile but nothing offensive at all. They also have the TSW which is a more player's profile for around $50 and extremely versatile if you're a good wedge player. IMO either option wipes the floor with Kirkland's and are very available.

Does Golf Works normally take a long time to get clubs delivered? Ordered a wedge and I’m going on 2 weeks.
@AZstu324
@AZstu324 25 дней назад
So prior to their recent popularity spike, they would normally have clubs built within two to three days and shipped immediately. More recently anything that requires a build is looking at about a 2-week turnaround time to get built and shipped but that's not including transit time. Hopefully they'll be able to get that window back down to what it used to be. On the other hand if anybody can do their own build and order the components separately, they usually ship out the same day but I know that's not most people.

Will you compare these side by side with the TS1 IMs? Seem like the 2 most popular choices on the Maltby website, but it's hard to really understand the difference between them, or why to choose one over the other.
@AZstu324
@AZstu324 10 дней назад
Unfortunately Gabe has sent both sets back and isn't able to do a side by side. Being that these both were my sets of clubs, I can tell you that profiles are pretty similar. Offset is identical. Sole and top line width are fractionally wider in the Ts1-IM. Feel from both are exceptional for their respective categories. Ultimately it boils down to each person's preferences. Having a chance to play both extensively, I preferred the feel and edge in performance of the TS4's. I've since sold the IM's. I personally prefer a solid head over a hollow. It's a more old school pure feeling that I really appreciate. Again, that's my subjective opinion so it just depends on what floats your boat. Hopefully that was helpful

Gabe, do you think the shafts that were in the clubs had any effect on the play too? Definitely a mishit the ball is still going straight is a reflection of the club head. I’m just wondering the trajectory and some of the control of the flight was more on the shaft.
@LetsPlayThru
@LetsPlayThru 25 дней назад
Absolutely. They flew a bit too high for me so I needed to club up more. Also some early pulls caused me to make some adjustments on the fly.
@AZstu324
@AZstu324 24 дня назад
To Gabe's absolute credit and showing his ability to adjust on the go, I built these 1/2" over standard and +3° upright. I'm 6' 3" so these are definitely built for me and my swing. That might explain some of the pulled shots. Also, I was just about to switch shafts before sending these. After 9 months of play, I just didn't love the height. I was going to switch to a set of Royal precision Rifle Flighted in 6.5 frequency which are a lower launching shaft. We decided that because of the obscurity of the RP's, it was best to keep a shaft that's easily accessible. I've since put the RP's in a set of TS3's and am really loving the setup.

Gabe did a great and very honest review of my clubs. Just for reference in case anybody's curious, the TS4 is actually fractionally shorter than the TS1-IM. The face height is slightly taller but the offset is identical. Topline of the TS4 is also noticeably thinner. These specs are per the Maltby website. Interestingly enough, the MPF is higher with rhe TS4's which per Maltby means they're just slightly easier to play.
@LetsPlayThru
@LetsPlayThru 24 дня назад
Thanks Stu 🙏 is their MPF rating by club category or is it standard for all clubs?
@AZstu324
@AZstu324 24 дня назад
@LetsPlayThru it's just a standard set of measurements that they take on each club and they assign a "playability" number according to things like MOI, CG, and other factors. The higher the #, supposedly the more friendly it is to play. It's a system created by Ralph Maltby quite a few years ago. It's not just Maltby clubs either. Each year they update their catalog with about every club on the market. Just look up "MPF chart". (Maltby Playability Factor). This is the whole basis of how they design their clubs. Their objective is to make the easiest clubs to play in the market for their respective categories AND while keeping them visually appealing. Also unlike other companies, Maltby posts very detailed specs on each model. Like specs that a club builder would want to know. They really are the golf enthusiasts DTC for these reasons.

@AZstu324
@AZstu324 20 дней назад
So I built these clubs. If you go to Golfworks, they have lofts, lies, head weights, offset, and bounce listed for each clib. Also they show other stats like material (in this case 1025c), MOI, CG, and even stuff like bore depth and bottom of bore to ground. These clubs were built with the GW +1/2" over their standard, and in 3/8" increments. GW swing weight starts at D5 and then runs 1/2 SW point per club with the 5i ending at D2. If you have GW build the set, depending on what shafts you pick, your probably looking at D2 in the long irons up to D4 in the shorter irons. Hopefully that helps some. I built this set with the GW starting at D5 and 1/2 swing weight point

Just get blades and become a way better golfer than your friends a few months slower than they were able to become mediocre.

Not a bad idea. I did the same when I was young.

There is NO advantage to playing blades, or any clubs lacking perimeter weighting. (Not that this video makes that claim. Just sayin'.) A common misconception is that blades are more "workable." Nothing could be further from the truth. The idea comes from the fact that a mishit with a blade is (a) more likely and (b) that mishit is more likely to curve. But fades and draws (workability) are not accomplished with mishits. They're done by having a difference between the swing plane and the face angle of the club. Thus, you can fade or draw a ball no matter what the perimeter weighting looks like. Now, you might like blades because they're more likely to have less offset, or because they have smaller soles, or because they're shorter from heel to toe, or because they're forged. But you can find perimeter-weighted clubs with those features. (I know, I play a set with the first three of those.) This was an excellent review.

Trust me, Maltby isn't a 1 trick pony like the rest of these newer DTC companies. They've been around for over 30 years. Take a look at their catalog and their "MPF" and I'm sure you'll find something you like. Even these , while they look like blades, their CG and MOI placement by design are more similar to some GI clubs. Their head designer Britt would completely agree with you about moving the ball and delivery. Everything they make, they factor playability first, then aesthetics. It's a Maltby Hallmark.

@@AZstu324 Not sure why this is a reply to my post. I said nothing about Maltby or any other club. And I reiterate: there is NO reason to play blades.

@@richdouglas2311 just inviting you to check them out. I figured you might appreciate their concept. That's all. IMO, I think people should be entitled to play whatever they want if it suits their eye and game. I personally find value in playing this type of club if your game is at the level.. But that's just my opinion and who am I to say?

There is an advantage to play non perimeter weighted irons if you launch the ball high. You can tweak shafts, but perimeter weighting will always launch higher than non.

Def not a blade lol Half the set is hollow body with a tungsten weight. These are players distance irons. Loft says so too.

Also; They're $800 with grips and shaft. The low price is just for heads.

These aren't hollow. Solid forged with tungsten forged into the toe which helps with that forgiveness on toe shots that Gabe experienced. Similar to the old Cobra King MB's. You might be confusing these with the TS1 IM's. Also, 33° 7i is hardly considered a distance spec and pretty on par with industry standard for a player's club. Lastly, the club Paks is where you'll find the fully built sets. The base set comes with the True Temper Score LT shafts which is a great versatile option. That's what sells for $490. Trust me these aren't crap shafts either. I built this particular set myself and sourced the shafts locally. Total cost with the heads was around $600. If you had the same set built through their custom shop you'd be looking at about $800 but that's with KBS C Taper shafts. It's still a world class club set up for half the price of the big guys even with a premium setup.
