Kratos forcing open the doors to Valhalla, and nearly destroying it by breaking out mimir from the cage with brute force is just a testament to his limitless strength.
Honestly I think the series is gonna infinitely end with Kratos fighting God and Jesus forgives him for it He'd just give up eventually Jesus with God power? Impossible to fight
@@AxiEisaHe has no reason to fight God or Jesus though, he only fought the Norse Gods because they attacked him first. I doubt God or Jesus would, unless they pull a Supernatural and make God evil, which I kind of doubt since that would be really controversial.
God hearing Mimir beg for his life in the cage and Kratos sounding genuinely worried and also panicking was heart-wrenching when I first played and hearing it again is painful.
watching Seán go "i dont wanna change, i wanna just play" while *actively skipping the blade of olympus rage as an option* killed me inside, loving the playthrough ❤
Kratos *gossiping* with Mimir about his romantic outing with Sigrun is hands down the best thing ever, this is giving me so much life and I love that the DLC was free.
That scene was so surreal. Mimir coming back just to see that kratos has locked him in a cage to be torched and begging him to save him is just so good. And the voice acting really pulls it all together
Mythology/language trivia: 1:43 Valhalla is Odin's hall of slain warriors (einherjar), who blissfully live there until Ragnarok (when they will fight against the giants). So to get there mortals need not only to die, but to die in battle and be chosen by a valkyrie to become an einherjar (those who die of sickness or old age go to the underworld, Hel). 5:10 A literal translation (from Icelandic) of "Ráða sjálfr sinum háttum" would be "to rule oneself in one's own way", but it does express the idea of "(being) one's own master" (as Mimir said). 11:38 There's nothing about Valhalla about "drawing from the memories of those who enter", but since it's a place where the slain warriors prepare for Ragnarok, they do fight each other during the day, but are restored to full health every evening (that's probably what gave the devs the idea to use Valhalla as a setting for a roguelike mode, and the memory thing was just so they could reuse game assets). 15:15 "Leyfa" means "to allow, permit" in Icelandic (they're allowing Kratos to enter Valhalla, so I guess it makes sense that word would open the door). 15:44 "Valgrind" (the main entrance to Valhalla) comes from the Old Norse valr ("dead warrior", referring to the einherjar) and grind ("gate"). 29:13 In Greek mythology, Helios is the god who personifies the Sun (while Apollo was linked to various domains like music, poetry, prophecy, healing, and light). 33:08 The omega (uppercase:Ω, lowercase:ω) is the last letter of the Greek alphabet, and because of that it usually represents some kind of "end(ing)". That's why it was chosen as the symbol of the God of War series, representing the concept of war itself (and the destruction/"ends" it brings). 36:26 The underworld judges are King Minos, Aeacus, and Rhadamanthus (Aeacus was the judge of people of Europe, Rhadamanthus the judge of the men of Asia, and Minos the judge of the third and final vote). They ensured every soul received a fair and appropriate judgment after death, sending them to Elysium if they were judged worthy, Tartarus if they had been wicked, or to the Asphodel Meadows otherwise. 42:26 Ares was the Greek god of war (in the series, Kratos became the god of war by killing Ares). 52:12 Bifröst was the rainbow bridge between Midgard/Earth and Asgard (the realm of gods), but in the game it's also an energy that acts as a status effect (it turns part of the health bar blue, and if hit by an attack that energy explodes, dealing additional damage equal to the blue portion of the health bar). 1:01:07 Fiske is a masculine name that translates to "fish" in Old Norse. 1:04:07 In Greek mythology, Hermes was the messenger of the gods and the conductor of the dead to Hades (the underworld). 1:12:08 "Okkar í meðal" means "between us/our" in Old Norse. It's part of a quote from the Njáls saga, in which the character Gunnarr says this after hearing the death howl of his dog Sámr (killed by his enemies): "You have been sorely treated, my fosterling Sámr, and it is to be expected that it is meant to be so that our deaths will not be far apart" ("Sárt ertú leikinn, Sámr fóstri, ok búð svá sé til ætlat, at skammt skyli okkar í meðal"). More literally, Gunnarr believes the time between their ("Okkar í meðal") deaths will be short, and that he will also die soon (following his dog's death).
@@AxiEisabro i avoided spoilers and videos since last year… just stay off comments and videos… smh be better (i played the game yesterday and completed it)
I also was wondering why they are just able to WALK into Valhalla. Then I remembered that Kratos canonically died SEVERAL times, and Mimir is just the reanimated head of a dead body. So if anybody can just casually walk into Valhalla it would be those 2
I’ve been subscribed since 2016, and watching this video has made me realize something. “Old green haired jack” felt more like an entertainer. A burst of excitement after a boring day at school. More recent Sean feels like sitting on the couch next to someone and watching them play. It’s more relaxing and calming-a warm feeling after a stressful day at work when I want to unwind. I’ve grown with Sean, and his content had adapted perfectly to his audience.
@@aidenblaze075 that’s interesting. I moreso like rewatching the older videos, not because I don’t like Sean now, but because it gives me a whiff of nostalgia. There’s nothing like RU-vid gaming 2016 when 5 different RU-vidrs played the same game and all 5 play throughs gave a different vibe. You don’t see series too often now days, not the way they used to be. But that’s okay
@@destiney6013 I get that and I think I would prefer how he was back then if I was a little younger but the more I’ve gotten older and how little kids (act similarly) have been driving me crazy, I guess something about how he is now is just kind of calm and relaxing.
1:09:39 As a designer, I can imagine the absolute joy of the game devs and creators when they see this reaction from players. To see your audience truly loving and enjoying something you've put a lot of thought and work into, and know from these reactions that you've made the right choice in the storyline. To see people's face light up and hear their happy little sounds of approval. Oh, it warms my weary little heart.
As someone who's autistic special interest is the GoW series, when Valhalla came out and referenced do many old things I was jumping or kicking my FEET while giggling. This was such a PERFECT way to do a callback introduction for new players, and a nostalgia homerun for old ones! Them utilizing GoW3's message of Hope just... It was perfect
@Penguinmanereikel You're meant to use it like a primary weapon rather than a "save me" button like the other ones. And in top of how long you can use it, it can parry nearly any attack including most red ones, but with exceptions.
i love the fact that the deaths are canon in this, in the actual game kratos is so powerful he killed all those gods without dying but he enters valhalla and pops out every 5 minutes because he keeps dying
What I truly love the most about the DLC, is that they could’ve charged $15 for it, and it’d be worth it for the quality and quantity of content. They didn’t. They let us have it for free. Astounding. Thank you SMS, you are without a doubt THE S tier studio.
1:02:08 This interaction is so funny to me cuz Kratos actually takes the time to humor him by saying hello instead of just telling him to piss off and answer💀 Also god I love Crispin Freeman’s voice. My top 5 of the voices he’s done is Alucard (Hellsing), Chairman Rockwell (Outer Worlds WHICH NEEDS A SECOND GAME RIGHT NOW), Gottwald (Code Geass), Itachi (Naruto), and Kirei (Fate). A close runner up is Shizuo (Durarara)
"Valhalla is the divine equivalent of therapy" is not the plot development I could have ever expected from the God of War series but I am here for it also Sigrun calling Mimir "dummy" is so cute I can't
not me lol. the minute i realized i could equip it (which was immediately after) i did. i wasn’t about to miss out on the opportunity to use the strongest weapon in the entire franchise (imo)
When the free DLC for a 1 year old game is longer than the new cod campaign that costs 60 bucks you can really tell how passionate Santa Monica studios are for their craft. They made this not just because they wanted us to have more content, they wanted to make more for this game and couldn’t put a price on it.
I just want to show some appreciation to whoever edited this video; the effects and everything are great, but even better is all the ways the face cam moves. Every time a notification pops up in that corner, the face cam moves so that we can read it; when Jack does a funny, the cam gets bigger to emphasize. To do stuff like that every single time is dedication, and I see and appreciate it!
In a time where a lot of Companies in the Gaming Industry are afraid of "Over-Delivery" this was very surprising. New Story, New Dialogue, New Voice Actors, New Cutscenes, New Set Design, New Arenas, New Enemies, and a New Weapon. For me to expect just a random roll of reused assets (ie. enemies, tile sets, upgrades) this was a fantastic and utterly pleasant surprise. AND they didn't charge for it? Huge kudos to Santa Monica Studio!
@@somerandolad Well, what i mean is ever since GOW made it's comeback in 2018 Kratos as a character has skyrocketed ten fold in popularity, almost to the point that's it's practically impossible now to not immediately think of him when someone says the words "video game". Before hand GOW was just a small fish in a big sea, but it's right up there now with legends like Mario, Sonic, Mega Man, Tomb Rider, Uncharted, Metal Gear, Mortal Kombat, Witcher, Halo, Street Fighter, etc... joining the band of IP's that will go down in history as the best video-game franchises ever created.
He was kinda big back in I think 2014? But it did die down after a while. Then they came back with GoW 2018 and it was a huge hit. But ngl, I kinda think their success was even greater back in the day mainly because I live in a 3rd world country and surprisingly, most have heard of god of war but only the psp versions, most people don't know that there's more than just that xd
I think that the fact that he is in Valhalla means that Odin actually killed him and was giving us hope for the whole game. Wouldn't it make sense? Freya is a goddess and she couldn't step into that realm, her own words.
@matheff71 Odin didn't kill Týr. He had to keep him alive in order for his disguise to work, (Kratos, Freya, and Mimir discuss this when they discover the prison Odin kept him in) Týr mentions that he went to Valhalla a long time ago to face the same trials he's having Kratos face, so I think he may have discovered a way to enter without dying first. I mean, he did figure out how to freely travel between mythologies and realms, so it doesn't seem like too much of a stretch for him to have discovered a back door in his travels. He even knew about this entrance, which only Odin, Freya, and the Valkyries knew about.
@@Schwartzwindhero123y’all might be missing what they were saying exactly. Obviously Tyrs not dead, since he’s right there and we can free him. But perhaps he died at some point, and either went to Valhalla and did his thing, or Odin brought him back. I mean one of you even says it, freya can’t enter cause she hasn’t died yet.
1:31:06 the transition from mimir to Helios on the back IS SO SMOOTH! LIKE DAMN! The trick they used with just mimir right out of frame during the zip line was perfect!
I like how God of War over the years went from a bunch of middle schoolers trying to make a crazy fun playground game out of what they knew about mythology, all the way to a Shakespeare drama
Not sure if I missed you figuring it out or not, but just in case, that cage room is from the original God of War room. It's in Pandoras Temple, you have to push a cage up a hill to burn someone as a sacrifice. Because of regional differences, it might've been an undead legionnaire in the cage when you played
This DLC has got to be one of my favorites...EVER! So much character development and potential insights into what's yet to come for the GoW franchise. So glad to see its being so well received and that Jack is enjoying it!!
For real. And the fact that it’s FREE is amazing. They could have easily charged $15 or $20 for this level of content but they basically gave it as a gift to the fans!
@n7sorcerer419 Totally agree! Far too often nowadays we get half baked games that offer the bare minimum when it comes to a good mix of Story, Gameplay, and Mechanics/Systems. I'm so incredibly thankful for devs like these that appreciate their fans and are willing to offer us their thanks in forms like this DLC in return.
I played Valhalla for the first time yesterday. Not knowing that Sean was gonna play it, I was very disappointed that I would never see his reaction to the Blade of Olympus rage. Seeing it today makes it all better. Exactly what I was expecting.
Me when I first heard Helios' voice: "Who's that talking?" Jack when he first hears Helios' voice: "Helios!" Proof that Jack can recognize character voices better than I can lol
1:03:59 me waving my copy of Circe by Madeline Miller around wildly followed by "Hermes can suck a gigantic bag of fucking coachroaches" *shakes the book more aggressively*
Every time Seán plays something new from the God of War series, I immediately have to watch it then add it to my playlist so that I can watch it again.
I genuinely thought Freya asked if she could pursue a romance with Kratos, & I hyped it up so much in my head that the real question was somewhat disappointing, but it was still really cool.
Shout out to Diceroll on the editing in this video. The attention made to ensuring Jack's camera doesn't block anything seems so simple but it's so damn smooth and helpful. It just makes the whole video feel so professional. The lil zooms as he speaks, too? Chef's kiss.
Kratos forcing open the doors to Valhalla, and nearly destroying it by breaking out mimir from the cage with brute force is just a testament to his limitless strength. Seeing Tyr throw hands in the DLC after Odin's BS is satisfying. Sigrun jumping in to carry Kratos and Mimir out of Valhalla, even as she is being burned alive, is so metal. That was so cool.
4:21 This was me lmao when Kratos appeared on screen, my immediate reaction was "Fuck outta here, they're making another one ALREADY??!" in a mix of excitement and disbelief. Turned out I was right to disbelieve lol this was still cool though
Okay, so at 1:02:00 when Kratos' journal is talking about Helios and saying "I'm glad you will never have to meet him" is the you he's talking to Atreus?? Because that's so sweet if it is. I like to think he's just journalling all the things he'll talk to Atreus about when he's back from his adventures
