As is customary for the Halloween season, a spooky scary game is in order - and I'm going straight to what everyone calls the scariest level in any game. The Shalebridge Cradle is a celebrated and beloved level in Thief 3: Deadly Shadows. Join me on a journey into an abandoned orphanage/asylum. Turn off all the lights, close the doors and put on your headphones: Here we go...

one of the most scary moments in my gaming history , i was shocked at how scary this actually was considering thief was not a horror game.

I said the same thing about the Cathedral in The Metal Age. This is much scarier though.

The zombie tomb level in the first game was pretty terrifying the first time. (looks it up) "Down In The Bonehoard", shiver.
@GoldieTamamo
@GoldieTamamo 6 лет назад
+Ashley Pomeroy "Down in the Bonehoard" doesn't even hold a candle to "Return to the Cathedral", or Thief2x's "The Cure". Imagine Bonehoard, but instead of a tomb, a burnt-out shell of a city crawling with ghosts and corpses. The latter even has a rather unsettling story about bringing plague victims back as the undead.

I know this isn't of much use now, months after this video was made, but a tip for when you're in the inner cradle is to watch the lights; they only flicker when zombies are nearby.
@KneelB4Bacon
@KneelB4Bacon 9 лет назад
29:45 I love how the electric zombies cause the lights near them to flicker. That makes lock picking a LOT more stressful because you can't take your attention away from the lock, but you know a zombie is nearby and may have spotted you.

I watch playthroughs of this level alone every few years. This here is a masterclass in level design and building up tension. Many horror games could learn something from this. Younger me was so tense and scared playing this. It also got me over my fear of the dark completely since that was your safe space.

I also remember being absolutely terrified after I played this level, which of course happened after midnight by coincidence. I didn't expect such a level in a Thief game so it completely messed me up! Awesome awesome awesome level design. I am forever a fan!

One of the finest game levels ever made. I remember the bit with the spiral staircase and the banging on the door at the top. It pushed my stress levels so high I was getting chest pains while playing! It took me ages to pluck up the courage to open the door, and what did I find when I got in there....? (I'm not saying, just in case 12 years later there are still people who haven't played it! :D )

Your playthrough of the level is perfect. Your slow, timid movements throughout the first half and being the unfortunate one to experience what it’s like to try and pick the lock while a puppet was approaching you and making the lights flicker. Hearing your short gasps of respite followed by immediate panic when the puppet revived. Well done

I have the feeling that scary sections in otherwise non-scary games are usually way more scary than horror games themselves. I guess its because you're often caught off-guard, as you really don't expect anything like that. I remember feeling super uneasy when I reached Ravenholm in Half Life 2, for the exact same reason. HL is a action shooter game, and then all of a sudden you're thrown in this creepy, lonely and eerie area. Leaving it through that mine tunnel was so relieving...

I'm amazed at how much well this level came together when you consider how badly constrained they must have been with 2004 technology and graphics. I love the subtle little work they did with the lighting , and how the background noise slowly builds as the player moves around , it really makes it feel like the building is waking up and becoming aware.

It just isnt. Excpet for hysterical fans of the first 2. But even they can only give diffuse reasons for it. I like 3 better for 3 reasons: Graphics. Almost no Zombies. No Robots. That alone is enough. Stuff like the open city is very neatly done and adds to the game (and the storytelling), even though its not vitally important. This level is an undisputed masterpiece anyway.
@varanid9
@varanid9 6 лет назад
Yup. As a Thief fan, I found the 3rd one to be not only comparable to the other 2, but, it was the perfect wrap-up to Garrett's story arc and the plot is my favorite of the 3. Just the right amount of horror that it slowly escalates to in a most gratifying way. The Cathedral mission in TDP started out good but got to be too annoying towards the end. Deady Shadows was sublime.
@GoldieTamamo
@GoldieTamamo 6 лет назад
+5Andysalive The first two games had really compelling intro-sequences for the stages, voiced by Steven Russell, along with some very atmospheric audio, and an interesting mythos, where the familiar, clerical, human evils of progress and development were constantly pitted against the chaotic, alien, pagan evils of the natural world, with nothing but ruffians, riffraff, rent-a-swordsmen, and spoiled nobility in between. You, then, were the self-serving jerk who split off from the magical Jedi Illuminati who were playing all sides, the Keepers--to get into your own hijinx, while they fretted about prophecy and preserving the balance of the world from both sects of religious fanatics--the Hammers and the Pagans. The appeal of this formula was that you had a unique, overarching lore, within which you could plug a lot of different custom adventures--a trip to an Indiana-Jones-esque hidden subterranean city, a stage where you explore a pirate's cove--one mission where you're breaking in on a city gala via the rooftops, getting little peaks into the inner workings of the city life (and at one point a jeweler's office and a necromancer's laboratory), through the various buildings you break into on your way through the urban maze on the way to this big mechanized palace place where the gala is being held. Add to this, most of these stages were fairly open-ended in how you navigated them, with different hallways and secret passages that could funnel you toward your various goals, instead of being entirely linear or entirely open-world. This lead to you both feeling lost, but having a sense that you were gradually getting nearer to your intended objective. And along the way, you were rewarded with little side bits of story, a funny conversation between a pair of guards, or perhaps a secret bit of loot--some ammo or potions, or saleable objects like gold, gems, or art, for purchasing your next mission's gear. Throw on top of this, connection in the lore between different levels of the game--you can read notes at one point about certain characters' dealings that come up in later missions, and things become a lot more clear: lots of love was poured into Thief I and II's storytelling. For an example of a really compelling level design from both of the first two games: Check The Dark Project's "The Sword", and The Metal Age's "Trail of Blood". Both are really good at telling a story, while making you feel lost in something bigger than you and your character first expected. That having been said, there were a lot of bad design choices in the first two games, as well--particularly, The Dark Project, which takes a 'really' long time to get to its main story plot, dragging you through some less than fantastic levels, before really ramping things up in the middle with several really good spooky levels, and then kind of pattering off toward the end with an underwhelming and overly-long last two or three stages. The Metal Age is still the gold standard for Thief pacing and story (though fuck Masks and Casing the Joint), but Deadly Shadows had some rather clever ideas of its own. In particular, I liked the idea of learning glyph magic that would allow you to access portions of the city that ordinary bystanders could not, and I wish more had been done with the 'Keeper' theme. Oh well.
