While being natural, I only started to retain length when I stopped wearing extensions/weave completely, got back to deep conditioning after every wash, and started wearing mini twists. Now my hair grows like grass! I have fine 4A/B hair ( which means the individual diameter of my hair strands are thin, fine hair has nothing to do with texture) so I have to wash my hair more often because I get product buildup very quickly. I'm at armpit length now. Great video, and beautiful hair!❤️
That’s wonderful, I’m happy for you. I see so many women abusing their scalp and hair with extensions and weaves. I pray that more will get strong as you did and stop. Although they see bald spots and thinning or no edges, they continue to add hair. As a minor, my mom use to let my cousin cornrow my hair sometimes, and once let our neighbor do it (no added hair). When my mom saw that my hair was tight, she stopped it. I feel so bad for kids whose parents didn’t know better. Although she dreaded wash day, my mom took really good care of my fine 4A/B hair. The density was so high that people thought I had thick hair. I didn’t get my 1st press until the age of 12, and it didn’t get pressed every wash day, and never added heat in between wash days. She didn’t know how to cornrow, so she styled my hair in ballerina buns, pigtails, braids, and wet set. I wanted a relaxer when I was a teenager because after pressing it would sweat out. My mom said by 18 if I still wanted one, she would do it, and she did. And she only touched up the new growth every 6 months. This is when a protein or deep conditioner 1st touched my hair. Most people with healthy natural hair don’t require more than a rinse out conditioner often or at all. When I went back to my natural hair in 2015 I did as some others did on RU-vid. Added product between wash days and have slept with conditioner in overnight a few times but, learned that it’s not necessary, so I stopped. Sleeping with conditioner overnight relaxed my 4A curls which I wasn’t happy about at all. I no longer add products, I just add water to reactivate the products already in my hair, which is why I probably don’t get build up on my low porosity hair. I’m very selective now with the RU-vid channels that I take information from. It doesn’t require much to keep hair healthy, it requires consistency. 🙏🏾❤️
I genuinely feel like they feed us this narrative that natural hair is INSANELY hard to take care of when in actuality, a simple and consistent hair regimen is the only thing we really need. I’m all for trying new things until you figure out what works for you but natural hair isn’t as impossible as they try to make it seem, you simply need the right tools and products
@@imnotapoet7218 Hi! Thank you for asking! I have a lot of allergies so I use the most natural things I can find. I use KCurlsys leave in and deep conditioner and if I do not have that, I use just plain shea butter. I use the black castor oil shampoo from shea moisture. For hair grease and oil I use the DooGro triple strength grease and the DooGro Hair stimulating growth oil. I also use other oils if I run out of that like Haitian Black Castor oil or Jamaican one, avaocado oil, etc etc. You do not have to be a product junkie to be natural and it doesn't have to be expensive either. Lastly, even though the products I use work great for me, they may not all work for you (I hope they do though!), hair is all about trial and error. I hope this helps!
That thing of "only compliments when your hairs out" a lot of the time YES. As black women it's only if you have your hair out or have box braids or something or something with extensions. Lot of the time nothing else is appreciated, which is really annoying
i mean obviously tho? ofc people compliment you more with your hair out, i feel like this applies to all women. i don’t expect compliments when my hair is in a bun
@@kiana4803 ah, that's a new way to see it. I got so use to compliments on my hair that i thought maybe my hair is considered ugly in a bun. 😭 But this makes me feel better.
I have big chop hair, so no compliments only weird stares. Before the big chop I had collar bone length but relaxed, but never slicked down, always up still no compliments, only with braids.
@@addyisloner interestingly I got a lot of compliments when I had a buzz cut (apparently I have the "face for it") but prior to that my relaxed hair was ratty and had scraggly ends. Now I'm natural and my hair is usually out in twists and braids no added hair but it always gets compliments (it's shoulder length and in twists shrinks up to ear length)
I've been a "lazy natural " since 2005. I've had hair down to my tailbone at one point when it was straight, but I literally would just wash, deep condition, use my L.C.O. products, put it in cornrows or small individual braids, and leave it alone for about a month. I'm disabled and all the movement it takes to do my hair is actually quite painful, so the less I have to do with it the better. Icut it to about armpit length and it's back to bra strap length in like 6 months. I use auyervedic DIYs for prepooing, conditioning and DIYs for my L.C.O. method as well and they're definitely the reason my hair's so healthy and growing so fast. I do believe in scalp massages though. I heat my DIY growth oil up and oil between the parts, massage it in for about 10 mins weekly and that's it. I've definitely learned a lot from you and I appreciate that you're sharing this with others.
I’ve been following you regimen for a year n some change and I’ve seen significant growth in my hair. I follow your steps and add my own and it never does me wrong🥰
When i went back to using grease a lot of people kept mentioning blue magic and softee but they both weighted my hair down but I came across your channel and saw you using palmer's and tried it myself and I love how light it is
I’ve been following your tips and hair regimen and adding my own as well for the last year and a half and I have had exceptional results. And I mean every single time I take my hair down I’m seeing a good quarter inch of hair grows. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I so appreciate you Achoti . Shalom!
2020 was MY revolution hair year too 😭 That's why I'm so grateful for it bc I started to learn how to do my hair myself and although I went through a horrible "lemme do slick back buns so I can be like all those black girls who use eco styler" phase I'm grateful I did bc I'm not interested in that anymore and prefer my individual braid styles even more. Sometimes you do things and don't realise why, but it's just to get it out of your system bc once you have you'll most likely realise it's not all that and get over it. And a lot of times you won't go through that and get over it unless you try.
....To the 12 tribes of Jacob that are scattered throughout the four corners of the earth and the strangers that have joined themselves unto them........ .....Research God’s Time in Genesis 1:14. God’s Sabbath is calculated by the sun, moon and stars, not by the Gregorian or any other man made calendar hanging on our walls. God may allow the “Powers To Be” to enforce some type of “Sabbath Law” before He deliver His people from all nations, to see if we will keep His Law or no. Examples: Deut. 16:4. Judges 3:4. Genesis 1:14 is a command from God. Days are by the lights in heaven. The Sabbath day is a day. God’s Sabbath is calculated by the lights in heaven. The true Sabbath is not Saturday or Sunday. The new moon day is the first day of the month. God’s months start with the new moon day. The Gregorian calendar do not start its months with the new moon day. Did Jesus calculate His Father’s Sabbath by the Time His Father ordained in Genesis 1:14? Lift Jesus up. Follow Him.
Now, one thing that I have to be completely frank about is when it comes to treatments they are not an everyday, every week, or every wash day thing. Treatments are designed to help reset or fix the hair strands or follicles. They are not meant for constant use. So in my personal hair journey, I had to learn to recognize that certain products do not need to be used back to back. Everything in moderation is the key. Overloads are the result of when you use or do too much with that treatment or product. And please, don't be afraid to try something new because others drag it down due to their own indifferent experiences. Cause yeah, if you use rice water too much it can strip your hair. But use it in moderation for about 2-3 wash days and your hair will be strong, shiny, and will give back proper natural proteins. P.S. this is just a standard comment to reassure folks that treatments aren't a bad thing and that you have the full freedom to experiment with full confidence. This statement does not pertain to Natural Academia in any way, it’s just a comment based on other RU-vidrs that I have personally watched in my journey😉 👍🏽
I love how you put an emphasis on how different our hair are, that what works for you might or might not work for us. That's amazing, can't get enough of your voice and how mature you're. 😍
Nice video. It’s definitely a money making business. I became a product junkie when I went natural again in 2015. I plan to curtail my spending on hair products as time goes by. As a child and as a young adult we didn’t do all that’s being done on natural hair now, and most people had a lot of healthy hair. The only products that we used back in the day was shampoo, rinse out conditioner, and hair grease or hair dresser. Three products, that’s it. 🙏🏾❤️
@Catherine's butler. That is the truth! Back to the basics. I tell myself I am not buying any new products until I use up the one I am currently working on. What a waste of $ $ $ to have 10 different bottles of conditioner or shampoo, just sitting. It is hard sometimes not to buy something. I do enjoy walking the hair care isle in the store and just browsing. But yes. Hair will grow if you just keep it clean and be gentle with it to protect your length. I love learning how to handle my natural hair from my you tube sisters. I wore perm for over 40 years. I never imagined I could do this natural thing. 4 years natural and I am loving it! Hair is mid back and I do stay away from heat.
@@cathyfreeman8608 Yes, it’s so hard! When I go to Target for other things, I find myself ready to go in the haircare isle. I’m getting a little stronger though. I tell myself that I don’t need anything and keep walking. Sometimes I’m successful. 🤷🏾♀️ I’ve learned from RU-vid as well. I’ve gone natural more than once 20 - 30 years ago but, wore a ponytail, hot curled, or wet set my hair. I never knew until this last time that I could wear my natural curls down, eg. wash-n-go. I love a “WNG”! Continued success on your natural hair journey and with curtailing on your spending. 🙏🏾❤️
Went back to the basics and splurged a little too. 4 little things work for my head. It isn't much but to leave it alone and learn how to manage it yourself
Natural Academia vids help me stay grounded with my hair. Have had a few setbacks with my hair due to stress so I started doing all this extra stuff…like soaking my scalp in castor oil, over massaging with all these rando RU-vid hype treatments…which made it WORSE. I pulled back from everything and my hair grew back very healthy. I just do rosemary and pumpkin seed oil for before washing now to block dht
I really appreciate you for being honest and also mentioning how many years it took for your hair to get where it's at. I notice come girls with hair as long as yours never say and then make it seem like all these "tips and tricks" made it happen fast. Or transition for years and then start out shoulder length (and don't say) talking about "how I got bra straps length in a year". I watch your channel a lot and love your chill energy.
Firstly, I saw when you uploaded, but I was like I GOTTA PUT ME FIRST, so I slept, so that I could come here with a fresh mind. SECONDLY, 0:08 sakinnn is skinningggg, hair is GIVINGGG, like Steranda teach me your ways.
I wanna be the typa girl that can just do 4 braids and not care about my short hair, my hair is 4b shoulder length (when pulled) but like just below my ears when curly. I’m 14 and feel like there’s this expectation for bw to have longer hair or always slick it down w edges laid. I used to ALWAYS slick my hair and my hair was left so thin and damaged and I always use a puff extension but now I just use wigs or a braided hairstyle and I’m currently on my hair growth journey but I wanna stop doing braids for a while so bad but I’m too insecure of my natural hair
Hey I was the same way and I learned to do different styles. Maybe look into cute cornrow styles that with be braids into a bun then add your puff to that so you dont have to mess with it daily
Girl I love your channel. I just bought the tgin daily moisture yesterday and used it this morning and my hair lovesssss it! My twist feel so juicy, healthy & full of moisture. Thank you so much for the recommendation, it's gonna remain stable for me.
Girl you out here saying not to do what everyone else or most of what everyone else say to do… but you got the receipts.. for me this just tells me to know my own hair and see what helps for me.. and take a little here and there … I agree with ignoring the hair for sometime but also still take care of it on the side ..
The things I don't do are prepoo, deep condition overnight, deep condition with every shampoo, use rice water, wear extensions, use grease, make DIY products, wear protective styles all the time. I just shampoo, condition, and style every 5 to 7 days because I have an oily scalp. Most of the time the style is a WnG. I know a lot of people can't retain length doing WnG's but it hasn't been a problem for me. On occasion, I twist my hair and pin it up.
I don't let nobody touch my hair as well ( like comb it) it's a no for me ,I don't use any medicine as well for growth and im stop being junkie products and I skip oil too ,grease is my bestie 🤣👍🏾
My hair ain't even natural but am still subscribed Andrew love watching your videos and i really needed this video cause a lot of videos online just keep telling me I can't grow my hair without so many products and gurl i needed this to remind me that i don't , thank you 😊
I have to say I'm glad that I found you bc I use to do the most now I'm so lazy with my daughter's and my hair. I HAVE AT LEAST 4 INCHES OF GROWTH IN 6 MONTHS just by leaving my natural hair in plaits at first thwn wearing wigs. For my daughter I get her hair braided to the scalp for 1 month oil or grease it every other day (bc she can get dry scalp easily).
You're speaking true girl 🤝🏾 I think the word "madiòk" when your hair are ruined in the term of Haitian people , for me that's was alopecia ( when you lose some part of your hair )
Loveeeee your hair and I love your videos they are so unique. I’m not gonna lie I am a hair junkie I love trying new products lol I may have to tone down on that habit. I have found that simplicity goes a long way, especially when it comes to your natural hair. I used to think that you needed several products to grow your hair but that is so far from the truth. Keep on inspiring ✨
@@NaturalAcademia You should!!! I know it's REALLY Amazing for the scalp!!! Blocks DHT and balances scalp ph! My scalp can get scabby at times, so, I do alllll I can. Aloe vera juice has been AMAZING for me. Have you heard of this channel? UnivHair Soleil She's the one that I first saw use Jute ru-vid.com (She has one channel in French and one in English channel ru-vid.comEnglish BTW, Are there any RU-vid channels in Crello, Creole, I think in english? I mean, channels are in all languages... I just maybe haven't seen it? Like for Haitian natural ladies? I've ran into English, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Ethiopian, Arabic, etc but not Creole...
So I have a scalp massager primarily because I was struggling to wash my hair, especially after protective styling , the front would be clean but the back 😳
I love the palmers olive oil grease that you use highly recommended moisturizing and nice smell I use a hair leave in and then the grease amazing results
I’m sorry I disagree with this video my hair has grown so much from hair massages from fermented rice water to aloe vera I mean like unbelievable length
That’s amazing to hear, but my opinions are not factual, just simply based off of experience. I do believe that a lot of the things that I personally find unnecessary work wonders on others. I’m happy that these things work for your hair!
This entire time i thought you were Nigerian you favor my Nigerian friend a lot y’all even speak and sound the exact same! My hair would fall off, loc up, and break badly if i did to it what you do. But i just love watching your videos because you remind me of my Friend 😍
Not sure exactly what the treatment was, the closest thing that I was able to find is Jute leaves buuuuuutttttttt I will make it my mission to figure out what exactly it was!!
Chemistry of hair doesn’t change as it grows longer because chemistry is internal. It’s the weight that changes because there’s more length on each strand that’s why it starts dropping over the years
great video. i think genes play a major role. scalp massage only feels good n kind of relaxes the scalp just as massaging ya body does. i use to only use grease for my hair as well till i decided to take good care of my hair and learnt about loc/loc method i started incorporating organic diy with a set routine to grow back my hair after a big chop and i’m glad i did. Reason why i share all tips and regimen i used to grow my hair as well as simple hairstyle tutorial on my channel to help people who might be in the same boat as i used to be. ya hair is beautiful. i enjoyed ya video. thanks for sharing.
I remember using pink hair moisturizer and greasing it because that's literally all I knew how to do at the time. I remember I scratched my head with one little finger and still after running the residue off I put a spot on my school essay. I was devastated, but it never felt so moist at the same time
The secret to growing healthy, beautiful, long, thick flawless hair is drinking lots and lots and lots of water plus eating healthy. And by this I mean eating fruits, vegetables, eggs and fish. Ps i'm talking out of experience. Personally the only thing I normally do for my hair to retain length is, I plaint mini braids, I wash, deep condition, apply treatment and moisturize my hair with a good hair oil, after four to five months since most of the time I have the mini braids on..
I personally need to take my first my prayer life, biotin and all the vitamins I can get to keep this hair on my head child 😂😂😂😂😂 I'm almost 64 years old and God I need everything to keep these treses 😂😂😂😂😂❤❤❤
(i’m currently dealing with P-O) Personally, my hair feels different, I finger-detangle my hair so Ik what it feels like. It’s dry, even after moisturizing which is very unusual. It’s straw-like, a lot of shedding as well. Plus I read that protein overload can cause porosity changes & I recall my hair being high porosity but now, I can see water beads on my water when spraying with water.
😭 it’s from “RK by kiss” in the color crystal gloss. I used lip liner to line my lips in this video so that could have contributed to why the color pops as well
I stopped getting weaves I noticed no matter how much I took care of my hair when it’s braided with weave or a wig it always fell out or changed the texture of my hair
My hair is growing quite well, but i have so many knots and i dont have the patience to remove then. Its like some strands have become rasta . Should blow drying ease this? I heard that heat is sometimes necessary for long 4c hair
Wait until you have patience to remove the knots. Then soak your hair with lukewarm water and get a conditioner with a lot of slip and detangle in sections. You might need a trim if you find you keep getting knots. Hope that helps
How do you wash your hair every 4 to 6 weeks while avoiding dandruff, dryness, itchiness and sebum build up? Do you do anything special to avoid this? I have to wash every week. My scalp starts itching on day 3! Help!
If you oil your scalp, that could be irritating it. And sometimes using a moisturizing shampoo can be the problem. It's better to use a Clarifying shampoo if you're planning to keep your hair in for weeks.
Please remember that everyone's hair and scalp is ultimately different, though it may fall into typical standards we experience things individually (genes, climate, hair regimens, etc). It has long been understood that many people with African hair patterns can go a long period of time without daily or weekly shampooing, without suffering the issues that you listed. If you are experiencing certain issues that are not resolving with basic hair care, may I suggest seeking out a professional hair consultation to assess your hair conditions? Some dandruff issues require prescription medicated shampoos and treatments, which can give your scalp and hair the boost to move it forward into healthy hair zones. If you discover the reasons why your scalp is struggling, please share them with us we are all here to learn. Good luck.
I really want to try and not touch my hair or wash it for a month or two but I have a very itchy scalp and dandruff. Do you know anything that can help me with my scalp?
@@hxneydom380 Use a clarifying shampoo such as Kinky Curly Come Clean, Innersense, the Doux, or any shampoo with sulphate in it. Clays are also good clarifiers such as Bentonite clay. African black soap is aslo a clarifier. Vinegar is also a clarifier, but should not be used often. I would say about twice per year. If you have low perosity stay away from vinegar. Vinegar lowers the cuticle, so persons with high perosity hair benefits by doing a vinegar rinse.
