It’s August 30, 2024 in San Francisco - the dystopian setting of an episode of “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” that aired almost 30 years ago. How well does the show mirror the city’s current-day issues?

Deep Space Nine forever underrated

Deep Space Nine and Voyager, both great Star Trek shows and underrated. Reminds me of Babylon 5, also underrated. We need more of those shows and not the new CGI infested, soulless shows with poor storylines.

Vindicated by the Second Season of Picard! (incidentally, stylus controls existed when the original series was on the air but didn't appear in the show because they were developed for the military after ww2)

"I'm not actually bald...I shaved my head to be in solidarity with Captain Jean Luc-Picard..." LOVE IT! I miss the new series "Picard" (now cancelled). One of the better Star Trek series with it's irreverent nature.

I was moved by that episode. I think that will be the future. People want to help the homeless and addicted but the working class and elite don’t want them in the street. The law won’t let them live in public any longer because of sewage issues if nothing else so they will eventually move them into places like that with promises of food and healthcare availability.

ST predicted liberal Democrats

So, everybody saw this coming; except the Mayors and City Councils. But don't worry SF, we've got a rarely used skateboard park instead of the once-vibrant gathering place at the Civic Center, and City leadership bowing to AI! Brilliant. "If you're not part of the solution..."

Actually, in mid 90s SFBA, especially south bay, was seeing a dramatic rebound from the tech bust and recession of late 80s. Sun Mico Systems, Hewlett Packared, Intel were still dominant players with Netscape, Yahoo, Excite starting a new revolution with the Internet. It was an exciting time if you focused on education, work and family, but if you focused on debauchery and a sinful lifestyle you didn't do well.

Those companies are gone or just a shell of what they used to be. Some say South Bay is booming but I see empty lots and increase homeless people. I have noticed even in 1990s, people I know who moved out of this area had their standard of living go up.

Big difference between Star Trek and homelessness by happenstance and SF and druggies who chose to be homeless on purpose to destroy the city. It’s not the same. Star Trek didn’t predict much of anything.
