Most things that look too good to be true are to good to be true... but sometimes there is a hidden gem among them. Today we show you one of these hidden gems! The Terävä Jääkäripuukko! This knife is so bloody cheap for what you get it's almost unreasonable towards other brands.

Huge fan here. You should check Mora 2000. It is the knife that started pretty much all of the outdoor Mora series and is a legend knife among the bushcrafters even today after 30 years. I think mora 2000 was issued to the swedish army in 1990. that might not be 100 percent true but i think i have read it somewhere. Keep up the good work.

Marcusson The higher scandi grind works much better than mora's rather abrupt grind. The sheath is much better. The thicker, full tang blade is much stronger (and better for battoning if that's your thing).

@@huejanus5505 thanks sir, I own two slightly different companions, but i am very interested in this knife. I used garberg from friend but i didn't like it so much. Too thick for precise job.. My companion is better at slicing and it was pretty short for battoning. Schrama is kinda to much and i want to hold it first.. Have a nice day Bro

I suggested to you to do a review of this knife almost 2 years ago when I first brought mine, I resharpened it taking that nasty secondary bevel off to make it a true scandi grind and sharpened the spine to allow for better striking of a steel, and to this day for the price it is still my favourite knife! I have the 1095 carbon version and would strongly suggest it to anybody.

It has been a long time since I saw a knife on RU-vid and went looking for it. After watching a bunch of videos featuring the puukko knives from Varusteleka I had to try them. 2 weeks after ordering I just found the box leaning up against my door. I bought the 110 and the 140 and they are both fantastic quality knives! Thanks for the videos guys, you did not steer me wrong. Both knives are spooky sharp from the factory and the handles feel great in hand. I know they will serve me well. Mooie prima messen, Ja goede man!

There's also the J-P Peltonen M95 and M07 Sissipuukko (Ranger Knife) models, Laurin Metalli makes the blades like in the Terävä models. Not quite as affordable, but still a steal for what you get in my opinion. Sissipuukkos also have a unique sheath retention mechanism which I really enjoy. Would like to see your take on either of the models. You can get them from both Varusteleka and Lamnia, but Lamnia has them in stock much more often.
@FrankSchweppe
@FrankSchweppe 5 лет назад
I also have the M07 (new model by Laurin Metalli, same blade stock as the Terävä). It's a bit more refined, with the teflon blade coating, but I still like the Terävä better as a hard-use outdoor knife. The Terävä sheath is way better, in spite of the unique rubber wheel retention system of the Peltonen - mine was too tight and I had to use it two-handed to sheath and unsheath the knife, which is not how it was meant to be. The Peltonen sheath also has no fully-enveloping internal blade protector, like the Terävä. I once cut myself in my off hand while sheathing the knife, as I was holding the sheath with too much force and had to use too much force to push the knife in - once it shot past the rubber wheel, the rakish tip cut through the leather sheath into my off hand. That will never happen with the Terävä. I finally sanded down the hand guard on the Peltonen, took off about 2 mm, and now it sheaths and unsheaths with reasonable force. I also found that the ribbed handle on the Peltonen is less comfortable during tasks that need a strong grip, without gloves. The ribs bite into your hands and you have their imprint in your fingers after. I sweetened them a bit with sandpaper; they should have been grooves (like on a Hultafors OK4), not ribs. I found that once I started using them, I liked the Terävä more and more and found little issues I did not like (such as the ribs and the imperfect protection of the sheath) with the Peltonen. The Peltonen is the better slicer of the two, if you do a lot of food prep it does that better, with the higher grind and the non-stick teflon coating. The Terävä is OK for slicing bread and cheese, but not as good as the Peltonen (but better than the thicker Moras with their steeper scandi grinds). The Teräväs have sharp spines and are great for scraping (I used my 140 to scrape old varnish from shelves), the Peltonens have no sharp spines, so no scraping there; you can brush off moss from a branch but that's it. The Terävä at the moment is about 20 euros cheaper, sheath included - and you can't order the Peltonen without a sheath if you prefer to make your own or use another one - for the M95 you can choose the plastic sheath which offers better protection for your hands, but the M07 only comes with the leather one and you would need to order the longer plastic one separately, or buy a kydex one, which makes the total package a lot more expensive than the Terävä 110. So the Teräva 110 in particular is better value for money if you want the short version of either. I found that my Peltonen M07, with the front hand guard thinned out a bit, actually fits reasonably well into a Terävä sheath (for the 110, which shows how much more room the Terävä has in its sheath). Both are good if you are looking for a 'militarized' puukko/leuku type knife, and if you ever find yourself all alone in the wild you'd probably be happy with either one - but the Terävä wins as the one that offers best value, no question.

It needs a lot of reprofiling, and a lot of sanding down, the bottom part of the handle, to fix both the edge and handle issues it comes with. All these, require a lot of experience, that means, that this is not a knife I would recomend for a "first knife" to anyone. Carbon Moras, fit that role perfectly.

I have the 110 and the 140, the Skrama, and the mini puukko bare tang... They are all great knives. Rough, and you can improve them by reworking the edges (slightly thinning and convexing the edges for instance), but since they are very affordable you don't have to be afraid to modify them a bit, or a lot of you feel like it. The steel is extremely tough, and I think that especially the 140 is a decent litle chopper for its size - very good for fast delimbing of wrist-thick branches you want to cut into firewood. The sheaths are great as well, anyone looking at these knives would do themselves a great favour by ordering a sheath as well. They are very secure even with the safety snap open, and with the snap closed I think you could strap one of these upside down to the ouside of a SpaceX rocket and launch it into orbit. Once you have one of these you can sit back and laugh at pathetic 'tip tests' of so-called 'survival' or 'apocalypse' knives that bend or break when you do something with them that these knives just shrug off. One thing: the 'coating' on the flat part of the blade is a forge residue, it seems a leftover from cooling the blades in oil. I found that it tends to come off and sticks to food, especially things like cheese (lots of soft cheese in France). For that reason I got rid of it, using fine steel wool (1000 grit or so). It comes off pretty easily. You can either brush off the worst gunk and keep a grey patina, of polish it all off.

I bought the skrama five years ago, love it, amazing chopper, great steel and heat treatment. Then I bought a jakaripukko 140 two years ago. I didn't like it, it was just the wrong size, not a camp knife, not a bushcraft knife. But most of all it was so hard to resharpen compared to the skrama (same steel and heat treatment). That was strange, a friend of mine had the same experience. Probably the 110 it's better.. At least in the size.
@FrankSchweppe
@FrankSchweppe 4 года назад
I don't have that experience at all, I find it pretty easy to resharpen. I can see why the 110 would be easier for general camp use, but the 140 can chop a bit better and I actually use that long straight spine as a scraper in my workshop - great for scraping off old paint from planks for instance. The Skrama has a far keener main grind (mine measures as around 17 degrees inclusive, the Terävä puukkos are 20 degrees). I wouldn't be surprised if it slices tomatoes better than the puukkos... For detailed cutting work, a thinner blade might have been better. The Mini puukko (bare tang in my case) is nicer for anything food-related as it is 3 mm thick, not 4, and has a higher grind. Still, these are fantastic knives. Super tough. And the price is just crazy.
@dougjohnsonbushcraftandbjj5561
The Martiini Condor Timberjack is the best bushcraft knife for your money in my opinion, $17 for a made in Finland, scandi grind, 1095 blade with a factory 90 spine and mirror polished bevel.
