I think thats mainly just because CGI has been trying to look "realistic" rather than "stylistic". If you want a very stylized 3d movie, check out "Into the Spiderverse", that has more style and aesthetic quality than like 80% of 3d movies these so far.

By your logic it wouldn't make much sense to compare good ol hand drawn disney to pixar. You're implying that the studios animation choices are based around the feelings it wants to capture? Hmm, it seems when trying to respond to a different comment wifi klonked out slightly and after copying my comment to paste when I turned wifi back on, I accidentally pasted my comment here. If I were to remark on this specific topic of interest though, CGI and 2D animation are ultimately often quite different, but they also both have the potential to be amazing. 2D has existed longer and thus has had more chance to grow, making it have stronger staying power. It also has more diversity in style and experimentation, as it stands right now. CGI has in some ways become a way for people to cut corners and movies often end up looking very same-y, but there’s still a lot to be seen in the future. As mentioned, Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse demonstrates that quite well. Art styles also tend to come and go so what truly counts as timeless can often change as well (rubber-hose style vs Disney Renaissance style). I suppose to me it can feel like comparing apples to oranges because with Disney and Pixar they’re at least within the same company (technically speaking), but mentioning Ghibli when talking about a Chinese film about an ancient Chinese deity is sort of awkward because there’s culture and story to take into consideration, making them quite different. But yes, I do think traditional animation feels more timeless. It’s actually quite an interesting topic, since there are so many different animation eras and countries, yet animation from years ago can still feel breathtaking on first viewing.

you don't know the comparison of these two movies are like comparing apples to oranges, one is 3D CG movie, another is 2D drawn anime. Ne Zha is a Chinese style animation mixed with Hollywood style, forget about the Japanese anime. As a Chinese you should be more confident, China's 3D animation movie, if not better, is as good as Japan.

I assume most chinese animations have not yet reached the western demographic or we westerners are very picky with our animations. It helps that Japanese animation has finally broken into mainstream a little more, so Nezha is more like a foot in the door if anything because there’s not a lot of Chinese(not made by the west) representation.

In China the character has always been big, next to the great Sun Wukong, saying a game boosted Ne Zha’s popularity is an insult. Maybe in the west his popularity was boosted. But in the east I can guarantee you smite did nothing.

I believe you're forgetting the nezha from fate/grand order- one of the most successful mobile games worldwide in recent years

Nezha has been known for thousands of years and there have been countless Chinese movies and dramas on Nezha so no, it's not popular because of a game

I get if you’re not a fan of the claim that the animation matches Pixar or Ghibli, but this definitely isn’t straight-to-DVD quality. Realistically, objectively, and fairly speaking, the animation is quite smooth and detailed, if not perfect.

Really? Dreamworks comparison is high praise these days. Look at the Kung Fu Panda and the How to Train Your Dragon franchises: gorgeous animation and cinematography in all six films.

BoltMix I’d have to disagree, many 3D movies have realistic renderings that 2D animation will never be able to achieve, but 2D also has a special aesthetic that 3D does not possess. They’re just different. And has someone who has watched this movie, and liked it enough to pay up to see it a second time in theaters: it is very special.

It sucks that videos like these convince people to dislike the movie more because it’s being compared to the legendary studio Ghibli. It’s obviously not a fair comparison, because they try to go for different things. Nezha is a movie based on an ancient Chinese legend in a modern retelling inspired by _Western animation._ Literally nothing about it was meant to be compared to Ghibli and it never tried to be the best of all movies. The director of it literally learned to animate _just for this movie._ He learned by playing around on animation programs during his own time. I watched it and loved it for its story and characters and instances of great animation. But I never once looked at it and wondered if its animation was the most impressive in the industry (because it’s certainly not). For amazing 2D animation, The Legend of Luoxiaohei is an upcoming movie that captures aesthetic cute vibes, and Mo Dao Zu Shi is a donghua/anime that looks amazing. That being said, Nezha was never a debate about 3D movies surpassing 2D movies. That was never what it was trying to go for. It just wanted to retell the legend of Nezha for a new generation, and it does suck it got twisted into this dumb debate that feels like comparing apples and oranges.

No they don't 3D>2D and having just watched Ne Zha in Canada this surpasses anything to come out of Japan or the US perhaps ever. Certainly recently even if not ever, by far the best movie I've seen in the past few years and one of the best movies in history.

Anime in Japan means Animated, not just by what westerners call anime which is made by Japanese studios.

Don’t mind the video. It’s not trying to surpass Ghibli at all. This is just a dumb argument the internet started. I’d still recommend seeing the movie but remembering it’s inspired by western animation and Chinese myths, not by anime, Ghibli, and 2D animation.
