Sam: is wholesome, talks about being a proud father to the artists Also Sam: if you had uploaded this to a roast me video I would have destroyed you and you would have ended up like this **aggressively holds skull up to camera**
the way that artists can improve so quickly is insane...it’s a bit scary to be honest. It kind of even happened to me, my art in 2020 was so weird (I would draw “anime” and by that I mean little faces with sharp chins and scary eyes that were too far down on the head) and now I think I’ve improved a LOT...my art still isn’t great but at least I’ve improved a bit more
Samee! Less than a year ago I started digital drawing and my drawings were just the base colours with the worst line art and now I have improved a lot without drawing really consistently!
EEEE EOH MY GOD THATS SO GREAAATTTTT I think I’ve improved aswell :D the colours used to be really trash and proportions D: I mean I still can’t draw hands well but keeping going is gonna be fun ^-/
this happened to me too it was VERY scary for me cause i'm not even in high school my art was bad weird proportions bad coloring and awful designs one year later and i have two styles make backgrounds and applying to scapa art. i never thought i would get good at something i used as a coping mechanism
I found I didn't improve much even over years until I started pushing myself outside of my comfort zone and doing studies that were practicing a specific thing. For example when doing a study I might be just focusing on blocking in values. When I started doing stuff like that I saw noticeable improvements over months more so than I used to see in a year. If you're feeling frustrated sometimes you just need to narrow down what you're practicing instead of everything at once.
i really appreciate your emphasizing that everyone progressing at their own pace. i know i've improved over the years, but i can't help but look at other people's art and progress and think that i'm doing something wrong because they're so far ahead while i'm still back here trying to catch up
I feel that. I’m in my mid 20s and haven’t improved. I peaked in high school and high school was STILL not good. Then again I didn’t practice. Practice practice kids!
I definitely understand and no, I will not tell you to be patient because I do NOT want to be a hypocrite. I try to tell myself that they started earlier than me, therefore, they have more experience but- I can’t bring myself to believe myself. Feel like I’m lying to myself. I definitely appreciate the enthusiasm in these videos but sometimes, looking at other peoples art can be discouraging. Another bad part is that I know that despite of what I said about them starting earlier and being older, I know people who are younger than me and are much better than I could possibly manage.
I’m just so confused on how to study sometimes… and what to study. I’m really into character design and I’m so overwhelmed with: poses, hands, faces, anatomy, etc, but I’m never figure out how to go about it all
Do it step by step. I started with anatomy, later focused more on practicing hands, went on with some background practice, switched to digital art and continued with shading. To sum it up, you should definitely start with the basics and later think about what you would actually like to learn :)
This made me look back at my art from a year ago and I can definitely tell that I've improved. It's not as crazy as some of the people on here but I'm glad that I've made some progress
I think it would be cool for them to also share more details to their journey, what kind of practice they felt helped them the most, but this is still pretty cool, they improved so muchhhhhhhhhh 💖
I think that a good thing to do is start your art journey is doing it with a friend, I did that and easily got competitive and tried to get better than her. I improved a lot more in all of quarentine trying to get better than my friend and I am still improving.
Yeah I agree. Competitiveness can be a great motivator for improvement. I joined this club at school called the artsense club and at the end of the month one of us would be titled artist of the month. So I did my best with my submission, and it turned out better than my usual art. (My submission is my pfp. Edit: and now I’ve changed my pfp and it is no longer my submission)
It's always hard to see your art progress on a day to day basis, but looking back at your art from previous years really emphasizes how much improvement was actually made in the bigger picture.
Ok, that one with Venti and Dvalin was just amazing. Maybe I'm just being biased though, I dunno. All of these art pieces are spectacular and it really does make me want to improve!
Seeing people improving like this makes me so happy I'm always worried that I'll never be able to improve, but seeing these arts and the improviments is so inspiring!
I actually did this. I got from drawing literal stick figures to creating comic pages and book illustrations in less than a year. I was so convinced I could never learn to draw that I had never tried. When I finally decided try, I drew every day and used a lot of reference. I'm really happy with the progress I made by doing that. In the next year, I want to get better at drawing backgrounds and clothes. Among several other things. All that to say I encourage anyone who thinks they can't draw to give it a year. You can do it!
this really does inspire me. after a year of drawing digitally i'm shocked at how much i've already improved. posting online & having people who support me has also helped ❤
I have made very slow progress through my life of constantly drawing but after watching this video and almost giving up I realize that I have to keep working hard to get over the hills of complicated work with trial and error to get where I want to be. Thanks for the inspiration 😄
i feel like im gonna cry anytime soon after watching this video cause i feel like theres no improvement in my art work and people are achieving many things and im not. im still 14 im still learning at my school but everytime i see those amazing arts from otheres i feel like theres no time for me to fit in a place with a bunch of talented people
I just recently started watching your videos- And I must say, I almost had given up on drawing and after watching your videos today, I felt quite motivated and inspired. Thank you for that!
Compare yourself to yesterday, last week, last month, last year, and you'll see that you've improved, keep learning from your mistakes, if you're struggling with that go search about it more and try to study your mistakes, work it slowly, keep practicing and eventually you'll get better and like your art
Life isn't always binary It's never always good or bad. Sometimes it's worst, worse, bad, good, better, then best. If you think your art is bad, that's okay! What's important is you're better than yesterday! It's always the small steps that matters. By small things are great things made ☺️
i started a learning to draw a little over a year ago, and while im still early in my art journey i definitely see the progress. I have a DnD character ive been using a progress marker and i try to do a redraw every 3 months or so and it definitely makes me appreciate the progress i've made.
I ts so good to see other people's improvement!! I was looking thru some drawings from the beginning of 2021/2020 and i see a lot of advancement even though i'm a beginner artist.
It's so interesting that along with the confidence of the artist, the characters grow as well. The second set of pieces is an amazing example. Super inspiring!
I think a big part of drawing and improving is not only being good and drawing realistic, but putting your mark on a piece. Everyone likes to see a good drawing with perfect anatomy and stuff and that´s a really solid base, but everyone likes it even more if you see stylization because diversity is what expresses us and our work. Especially on Sam´s art you can really tell that it´s his because there´s so much expression and stylization. Just wanted to put my thoughts down here, have a nice day :)
:D saw them on the server already but inspiring to see them again! I loved to scroll through them in the past week on the server, always checked throughout the day. I wish we always had that channel so everyone could show their progress anytime and others could get inspired, its so cool to see these things and as soon as I have some progress, I guess I wish i could post it in such a channel too :D
@@modesty8634 i honestly dont know if non patrons can be on the discord server, i just got added automatically when i joined sams patreon, im in the 5€ tier so 2nd tier. but u should look into it, the server is such a great and helpful and encouraging community
Looking back on years before really does help. I am always very very critical of my art. I feel like I've been drawing for years and still need references and can't do much but recently I found an old flash drive from ten years ago and the drawings on it were done with reference and were lacking so much. But my drawings today that I do I was able to see much more confidence in working without references. What helped my art a lot was to stop feeling like I should be guilty about using reference. By studying the references hard while I draw instead of just copying what I saw was the biggest help. In the ten years I simply became a student of life. I looked at people, how they sat, how they moved, how their muscles moved. Looked at my own body, looked at nature and the colors etc. All of this I believe have contributed a lot. Hands used to be so hard for me too and I would do all I can to hide them in a drawing but now I'm drawing them and like them!
This is how I felt from 2018 when I first got my iPad and uploading videos to my art style now which is way more confident looking and big improvements in anatomy 😅
This is so relatable, my art style over the span of 2 years had improved so much, and looking back at it can kinda give you cringe, and appreciation XD And that's the beauty about being an artist.
Ok, I'll admit: I'm a sceptic. 2:45 in the video, and I'm sceptical about how much in this video was actually painted, and how much was just painted over.
Sam i gotta say thanks for making this series. Whenever i watch a video it motivates me more to practice on getting better with my digital art from going from traditional. :)
this inspires me so much. I have been super in to drawing lately, but I want to try digital art but it’s just so much harder than just sketching or something like that. I’m gonna try my hardest to become a very good artist and I’ll come back to this comment next year and I’ll see how far i’ve come by then :)
This was very VERY inspiring!! i suddenly had an urge to make a detailed drawing,it came out just as expected. Before i started watching you,i was very bad in light source, coloring, rendering. And now i've improved alot!
How do you guys improve SO much?! I started drawing beginning of this year and I'm still feeling stuck... 😂 I decided to really focus on faces till the end of the year and hope I see some small improvement, but this is insanely good!!
I recommend doing art warmups and working on your ability to draw lines and shapes then drawing a lot observationally, then you can draw anything if you have a reference
I love that you can give better art shit and still encourage artists whose stuff isn't even really up to the standards of your burn videos yet, you certainly know your audience.
study the fundamental structures. there is this class here on RU-vid that I really like, I'll copy the link for you. edit: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gpH8T2CRlLI.html i know, this can look hard in the beggining. but, if you think this tutorial, you can search for "drawing fundamentals" here on ytb.
It depends on what you ultimately want to be able to draw. But you should start with the fundamentals: proportions and accuracy , good lines, values, colours, perspective etc because you can’t draw anything without them. So start by learning simple stuff like perspective and lighting on primitive objects and then you can work your way up to faces/figures.
i was so blown away and surprised by the improvement and was wondering how they managed to improve so much over just a year or two. but then I realised that *holy shit I did the exact same thing*. you forget how much you've improved yourself until you look back at your old pieces!
3:03 That’s from genshin impact, the artist might’ve traced parts of the art (the background and stuff) from a story part of the game. I’m not sure though.
I discovered your vids 4 weeks ago and now I'm addicted. Currently waiting for my first tablet being delivered. Thank you for making these videos and inspires people!
