This years EICMA 2023 show you could not ignore the amount of Chinese motorcycles on the floor. A lot of them for the first time looked like bikes people in the west will want to own. The question is will they be the next Japan and take over the industry or will they fall short?
Thanks for watching,

I think having a great dealer network is key. I currently have multiple Japanese dealers located with a 2 hr drive of where I live. There are 0 Ducatti, Aprilia, BMW, KTM dealers located within that same 2hr area. I would never buy a bike where I have to drive 4-5 hrs to get parts or service done.

I had a Benelli 302 for a few years. Besides a few minor issues it was a good beginner bike. The biggest issue was dealer support. At least the larger manufacturers might have some competition which can only be a good thing. How many people have been wanting a 450 rally bike at a reasonable price and now Kove have done it.👍

As a manufacturer I find it absolutely amazing that Japan or KTM or any of the top line bikes can make what they make for the money they sell it for. As a consumer I think the prices are a little bonkers! If wages stayed on par with the price of everything that would be one thing but they absolutely have not. I personally hate the country that KOVE is made in. But I also hate spending top dollar for everything too. I hope they give the other countries a wake up call at the very least. Seriously is a KTM 300 worth $15000 Canadian???????????? Is someone on crack?

5 years ago I wouldn’t consider a Chinese bike, now I own a Voge 300 rally and at under £4000 on the road and so much cheaper than a CRF, think it’s a great bike for green laning, been so much fun to ride, if I loose 25% over the next year or so, it only £1000, you would loose than the whole bike cost in depreciation on a GS. Went to look at the Kove 450 and was really impressed with the quality, said will be interested in the 800x when they are going to bring it into the UK, may even get the rally version if close to the weight they are quoting, 165kg.

I’m old enough to remember early Datsun (Nissan) and Toyota’s. CFMOTO 800 Explore is getting good reviews. CFMOTO 450 MT ticks all boxes especially 800-820 seat height for we vertically challenged folk.

I currently Own a CF MOTO 300NK (22) .Took a gamble when I bought it new and every time I ride its never let me down in the 20 months of owning . Great bike can not fault it in any way as a new rider, also own a CRF300l which is a great bike too in its own way. But will be buy the 450 MT soon as it hits the stores here in Aus around April / May 24 and should be around $9K going by the other 450 models in the CF Moto line up. Cant go wrong for the $$$ . But sure other people will find fault and there opinion will be different .

Hey solid, really like your productions. You cover a lot of ground! I work part time as a sales rep for a bike shop that sells Kawasaki, Suzuki, Moto Guzzi, Benelli and CF Moto. This is actually the first year when I've thought, CF Moto, is poised to take it to the Japanese manufacturers. They offer more features, at a much lower price, and their build quality is very good. I'm looking at trading my Crf450RL for the CF Moto 450. We will see.

Not only do we find improvements in the finishes in the Chinese ones, but traditional brands are neglecting theirs. On the other hand, it has been several years since Chinese brands arrived in countries with the worst economies, being able to sell a lot and generating a good reputation for less well-maintained motorcycles and great feedback to continue improving. I think there are only 2 major disputes left between Chinese and well-known brands: 1) Support: although China does it differently, distributing its motorcycles through independent dealers in each region, much more practical and economical than setting up its own dealers; In this sense, I believe that the Chinese are already winning the battle. 2) Performance: it is true that Chinese motorcycles have less capable engines, but considering their low final price, we could actually establish categories by price instead of performance, so we find Chinese motorcycles with higher category features competing with simpler category motorcycles. smaller but equally expensive. Example: A Kove 450 Rally can be seen as a CRF 450 with lower performance, but the magic is that the Kove 450 is actually competing against a CRF 300 Rally in price, and between the latter two, the prestige doesn't matter to you. or reliability, because you are getting a much superior motorcycle with a much more real "rally" feel. It is logical that not all examples are so clear, but it is certainly for this criterion that they are already winning so many fights in the market. In conclusion, I dare say that today we are at the turning point where big brands have to offer positive responses or die. By the way, your review is very good. It represents the concerns of motorcycle fans very well. Thank you so much!! Greetings from Argentina!

Really well said Solid, you're right when you say there has been a subtle shift in people's attitude to Chinese bikes especially over the past year. And probably the reason it's more difficult to pick out a Chinese bike from a line up of bikes is that nowadays they're mostly all built in the same place, regardless of the badge on the tank.

I have a Fantic Caballero 500 Scrambler, it has the 450 Zongshen motor, the basis I think for the Kove 450 Rally's motor. The Fantic is made in Italy but if we're talking sweet motors here this is a star. I have a few bikes gathering dust in the shed while I'm out having a ball on the Fantic with it's cheeky, punchy motor.

I resto modified an old XL 185 with a China CG250 engine and so far its been a great first bike learning experience from a total nut and bolt restoration with a chonda heart transplant. With most of the parts to complete the XL185 being bought from aliexpress... The CFMoto 450MT is looking like my first new bike option. From what what experience ive found working with china parts is that fixtures/fittings and electrical is the typical weak point...which I don't think CFMoto has issues with.

Good points. But I have been paying attention to CFMoto after my local Dealer became the KTM/CFMoto dealer a couple years ago. The bikes they have, like you said, you would never think it was, "Made in China". All their bikes look very good. So far I have not heard complaints about any of them. So not hearing a bunch about something can be a good thing. I hope this is a real eye opener to KTM and Suzuki. Small CC ADV bike at least 450cc or bigger. Ignore all those weird license requirements and build one with more than 47HP. Go fir it and truly do it right. On paper the 490 was amazing. 60HP....who knows, maybe the 500CC Engine that CFMoto is building now will soon be offered in the same chassis if the 450MT....boom, there you would have what we all would like....one can dream. If you build it, they will buy it....

Youngster here with virtually no budget for anything extra. Our little one is growing up and starting school, we needed a second vehicle so I could go to work while the misses drops off and picks up our little one. I already had my motorcycle license, so I made my case. Motorcycles are cheaper, more fuel efficient, and we can actually afford to get one. I settled on the 100% Chinese made Lifan Xpect, because I heard nothing but good reviews about even after extensive research. And the bike has been in the US a while. Parts are available already in the US online (can't say the same for my last Honda bike!) and for cheap. Found someone selling it for $1500 with less than 200 miles on the clock. Got it, licensed it, paid tax on it, we're now talking $1800 all said and done, with a working fuel injected 95 mpg motorcycle in my apt. parking lot. Fun on the weekends and will take me to work on Monday. Suck on that, Japan.

I bought a Benelli Amazonas a few years ago. An amazingly powerful 1130 triple big trailie with a wicked exhaust note agressive engine and absurdly atrocious fuel economy. I loved it until I took it on a European trip from UK to Bavaria. On the tin in to München we were caught in a seriously wet day and my indicates stated playing up. On my return home I realised this was a common issue. Frankly the electrics were soluble and after a summer when I never knew if the bike would get me to my destination or home I gave up. When Benelli sold to a Chinese company many owners on the forum predicted quality would deteriorate. It could not have been worse than when manufacturing took place in Italy. Just about all the major manufacturers outsource production of some of their vehicles to China and other emerging manufacturing nations in Asia ( triumph use Thailand, BMW produce some models in China). Europeans do this to save cost on production but as long as quality control is good that shouldn't be a problem. The new Chinese companies like the Benelli owners, Qianjang or the companies like CFMoto aren't stupid.. They know if they sell Europeans, Americans, Australians etc crap bikes they won't crack the markets. Everyone addicted to Triumph and Norton when Meridian was run by morons promoted 'Buy British.and talked about Jap Crap. As soon as people start buying based on patriotism, you know the products they choose are rubbish. A great motorcycle will sell because it's a great motorcycle. That's why the Yamaha XS750 outsold the Triumph Trident and BSA Rocket 3 and the CB750 outsold the Triumph Bonneville and Norton Commando in the 70s. Some of those bikes you displayed look great and without a Ducati, BMW, KTM or Triumph price tag will cut a big niche in the market. I'm sure I'm not alone in being completely uninterested in the latest 1200, 1250 or more ridiculously 1300 cc pretend Moto cross machine. I also don't understand why the Benelli Trk 502cc was as heavy as my 1130 Trk Amazonas. The 50s Bonnevilles were barely 170kg. Let's have some 650 bikes today of similar power to weight ratios. Leave the Lardy stuff in the design stages.

Totally agree on the need to have a sound coming out of my bike that pleases me. Its satisfying and gives you the pleasure to actually "feel" what s going on in the motor. As a V twin bike owner, I mostly don't like the sound of the newer bikes and especially the parallel twin ones. But what a surprise it was when I first heard of the new Kove 800x running. Well presented & written. Your opinions on the CFMoto 450MT are very valid. This bike if priced competitively in Aus will bust the light adventure market. When the KOVE 450 Rally gets ADR compliance, that will also become another popular model/brand. Who gives a rats arse if you deck it… it’s not expensive to purchase. The 450MT engine has proven itself already being derived from both the 450SR & NK. I for one cannot wait for either. Thanks for your work.

The Kove 800X has caught my eyes more then a year ago. Its excellent weight figures need to be independently verified. And even if they are correct it needs to be investigated how that was achieved because if it was done by using paper thin frame or saved on other important part that make it too weak then I rather have an extra 20kg but be safe. However, RELIABILITY is the most important thing to me especially for an adventure bike where I would probably break down in the middle of nowhere. Unlike CFMOTO who uses a known KTM engine on the 800MT, Kove apparently makes their own. Well, I am not going to be an early adopter for that bike. Maybe if proves itself in a year or 2 I might consider it. Like you said Japan didn't do it in a day so it may take a few year to prove the reliability question.

Spot on Solid, we need bikes that the people want, tick for China, we just need the dealer support....how many horror stories have there been with dealers and warranty claims waiting months for decisions, CF moto can swamp in sales the market if they are willing to support the purchaser if they have a problem, offer long unlimited warranty on bikes like their cars and 4x4's. Remember the days when you only got a one year warranty on bikes and cars, then Korean vehicles offered a 5 year warranty, quality improved locally but failed as they did not build what the people wanted.

I have always shied away from Chinese motorbikes. But last couple of years I have seen a few CFMOTO bikes around, and was impressed (surprised), by the look of quality. I suppose I thought these guys may actually be getting there. Anyway, after seeing the introduction of the 450 MT at the Eicma bike show, I was quite taken away by the bike itself. A bike I have been looking for, a mid weight smaller adv bike. So I’ve just put a $250 deposit on one, due in Australia mid 2024. I have never cared about resale value of bikes I buy, so that’s not an issue for me.

I’ve owned two Benellis, the Leoncino 500 and 752s. Only had each for two years, which is what I typically do for my second bike, so I can’t talk about long term. However both were fun, reliable and on par with all the other bikes I’ve owned over the last 15 years that includes Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Royal Enfield and Triumph. Nothing inferior about these modern Chinese manufactured bikes. The exhaust sound on Benellis were the best of any manufacturer I’ve owned, if they can drop weight it will be game over for the competition if the competition don’t evolve. Resale on the Leoncino was great, but the 752s was not as good.

Agree Solid, if Yamaha built a T3 or the Honda NX500 wasn't a cynical marketing exercise I'd buy either one - they would both be perfect for me, but they don't make the bike I want. If China does, then that's what I'll buy. The Japanese manufacturers have become too conservative, and are resting on their laurels. I remember when Honda were at the bleeding edge - the RC30 and the NS750 were both engineering marvels, but they've become too staid and, sadly, I think they'll pay the price.

I’m still waiting for THE bike that splits the dual sport and adventure market and I don’t care about the country of origin. Under 400 pounds, 850 or lower seat height, usable TFT, CC, heated grips and 50 or more horsepower and a quality suspension with 240 travel. Just sold my CRF 300’s because I’d like to bike commute a few times per month and I have to use the interstate. Had a Rally Pro which was great for commuting but out of its element in the woods. I’m close to buying a Tuareg but the weight is still worrisome. Perhaps if the 457 gets the Tuareg treatment

My local ktm dealer sells Chinese motorcycles, my local honda dealer sells BMW s but also sells Chinese motorcycles, and this here in USA, the majority of bikes on the streets of Central and south American are Chinese ,so I don't think that dealer network would be much of a problem

Timely video Mr. Solid. This trend can only be good news for consumers. Wake up Japanese motorcycle manufactures!, time to start paying attention to what consumers have been asking for. Especially Suzuki marketing 20 yr old designs. Lack of dealer networks for Chinese bikes: If Kove has the complete parts diagram online and ships the parts I'm good to go.

Good stuff Solid and IMO spot on. The three questions regarding China (for pretty much any consumer product are) and have been for many years: 1--Are they interested in the market. 2-At what tier are they interested? And 3-Are they ready. (which in today's world is pretty much a function of the 1st & 2 questions) Anyone that does not understand China's ability to produce anything from top tier cell phones to state-of-the-art nuclear reactors is either ignorant of the facts or in complete denial. China will go head-to-head with today's best in any market they choose,. Anyone who believes otherwise is wildly out of touch with today's design and manufacturing worlds. Having owned bikes from half dozen top tier manufactures over the last 30 years, I'm looking forward to how China and other countries (hello India) shake things up. There is a market for better and different, and new players help shake that up. Thanks for good stuff as always!

I and several mates have CFMOTO 800 MT's and they are a quality bike, they have KTM components and many other quality components. The more you research, you discover many interchangeable parts with KTM and Husqvarna as they have joint ventures and CFMOTO has a small stake in the parent company. Like any bike, they aren't perfect, but they are excellent value, fun to ride and have many options that the "brand" names charge up to $10k more. I had the CFMOTO 300NK before this bike and it was a fun, reliable bike. Prior to that I had all Japanese brands, but for me, they are not really worth the extra dollars now when there are quality and attractive products like this out there and a pretty good dealership list as well. Many people refuse to buy Chinese made bikes on principle and that is ok, but reality is nearly everything you buy is most likely made in China. Like anything, try before you buy or join social media groups and of course RU-vid, where you can get genuine feedback and any issues highlighted. If I had the choice, I would have a new Moto Guzzi Stelvio, but hard to justify the extra near $20K at this point for a bike that does what the CFMOTO does and does well (but I can dream).

Solid I think China are improving quality and providing products that are somewhat acceptable. Surron Talaria and the Apollo RFN ( beta EMX) Take Braaap for instance. a little Aussie company making bikes in China and assembling them here in Frankston Melbourne. The Braaap brand has been selling the caffe racer ST250 single Pushrod for quite a few years and there are plenty of bikes some 10 years old now that are still running around with many 0000,s of kms the Braaap MX450 also seems to be performing quite well , more time will tell and the Kove and the CFMoto with some KTM input and the Binelli Italian input will prove positive. Their latest ST400 twin cylinder and the cruiser 400 - a fair bike for the money - half that of a similar Japanese bike. Just dont leave it in the rain as fasteners will rust in seconds. Their Zinc and chrome plate are still poor. Maybe pass 10 Hrs salt spray resistance testing if your lucky. China's biggest hurdle is their own nature of trying to cut corners and reduce costs without giving full thought to that impact. China just does not have that Kaizen - TQM mentality that the Japanese live by. That said they have made some big improvements in the crap that were making . My take is that if you buy it from China just know it may not last no matter how well you look after it. The steel the Al Alloy tends to be questionable as to try metallurgical quality, and welds are still like rows of pigeon poop. Maybe another 10 years may see a huge swing , but I think not ever the same as Japanese big 4. Just look at the China Tesla and China GWM, and Cherry auto builds , polished turds for sure.

I made the same mistake on the 60s I would not have Japanese crap. I started with second hand triumphs, then in 71 a new triumph trident, Broke down a lot, Middle cylinder valves and pistons. Oil leaks. Then bought another new trident Riding home after picking it up. Raining like mad the T150 v stickers sliding backwards on the side panels. Oil leaking (missing oil seal) Later, Middle piston and valves. So I wanted a 900 kawasaki, but they didn't handle, So bought a brand new Rickman Kawasaki. No problems. I first visited China about 40 years ago. I kept on saying this country is going to take off. People argued with me. The other thing I keep hearing is about ethics. The people who keep spouting this, Then sit down with a cup of tea or coffee and some chocolate, Look at these industry's, I hope in their smugness, don't drop tea or coffee or chocolate on their Tshert made in some third world sweatshop employing children, The same goes for the industry's I previously mentioned. All the above I have seen personally, in India, Africa, South America, and Far East. I just remembered in 2017 I bought my second new KTM, my first one a 1190 super adventure. The only reason I changed this was because it was too tall. The one I have is the 1290superduk gt, I had the it delivered to my house I got my bike gear on and off to show some of my pals my brand new bike. I wasn't long before smoke started coming up from the engine Same problem as my brand new triumph trident, Oil leaking from the spark plug weep hole from the spark plugs, The bike had too be picked up and the seal in the cylinder head replaced, because it was damaged in the factory when it was built, not much changed in 45years.

Last night I had same thought, is this the "Japan moment" for Chinese bikes? I am 55 years old, I have been looking for true middle weight (as 180 kgs not displacement) adv with good off road capabilities....... It's crickets from the major manufacturers, all we get is heavy, not required HP things. Last night I "discovered" the Cfmoto 450 MT. Wow except the curb weight at around 190 kg. 270 deg twin, 21/18 with tubless spokes, fully adjustable suspension, real skid plate, tail rack...... This is what I want, this is what many of us want. My current ride is the 300 rally with $3000 worth of mods, suspension, clutch, power mods..,...... Honda do not deliver a well sorted bike from the factory and they don't seem to care. I am getting little CFmoto Papio mini bike. Let's see at what quality level this little thing is. Good vid

@@chroniclesofsolid Got the bike yesterday, it's on par with Japanese bikes or better, especially all the small features you get. This is a $2300 USD (in Indonesia) mini bike. Fit/finish, welds, paint frame and body super nice. Switch gear, clutch, brakes, transmission, display/info, seat (two materials), tool kit, suspension with dampening/proper spring rates (unlike my Rally 300), foot pegs, rubber materials used.........all very good. I rotated rear muffler clamp for cleaner look, the throttle body uses quality but "universal looking" clamps, both clutch/brake perch screws were super tight but when I removed pass pegs, the 4 bolts had grease on them. For me, CFmoto quality question is answered, it's good. The upcoming 450 MT, is my bike. Hope this helps. Just got back from a night ride, all switches are back lit and headlights are awesome.
