@@roverwaters3875 sorry, brother..multiple sources estimate (bc there were NO attendance records made or kept) to be 750k - 1.6 million. Even Hetfield said he was guessing...and a crowd that size, the on-stage vantage point would not have been able to see everyone on the airfield that day. In the end, really, being salty about it all seems rather silly. It stands as a record-setting crowd size for a 'free concert' and a monumental event in music, and even World, history. Chill....

@artsilva

@@pablobomgiorno8273 Correction; you are confusing it with the moment sh*t actually went down, Dec. 26th was the official date and declaration of the new Russia..... On 25 December 1991, Gorbachev resigned as the President of the USSR, declaring the office extinct. He turned the powers that had been vested in the presidency over to Yeltsin. The following day (Dec. 26th), the Supreme Soviet, the highest governmental body, voted both itself and the country out of existence. This is generally recognized as marking the official, final dissolution of the Soviet Union as a functioning state, and the end of the Cold War. This concert was actually held in September 1991, only a few days after the "August Coup" by hardliners and KGB to [simply put] overturn the New Union Treaty signed in the summer of 1991

Lars can say what he wants and the number has jumped around, but they truly have no idea how many people were there. AC/DC has said it was in excess of a million, about 1.2 million. It’s definitely not 500k, it’s over a million, but how much over I have no idea. If you look at what a 100k seat arena looks like, that crowd in Russia is well over 5x those crowds. 🤟🏼🤟🏼🤟🏼🤟🏼🤟🏼🤟🏼One of my favorite bands EVER! I’m in my 60’s and STILL listen to all the heavy metal I can! And not a day goes by where we have tunes playing whether we’re working in the garden, paying bills or sip sip sipping a margarita or two or 3 or 4😂!

I jjust turned 30 in October 1991 baby here, thank god to my parents growing up with the 80’s, I absolutely love the 80’s. These are the crowds I want today, no cell phones, just in the moment and having a good ass time. I know people think it’s just a lot of fast and loud music, but the lyrics can be deep too.

These were the days. The feeling you got being in a crowd (almost) that size was indescribable. So glad I was born when I was so I could experience how awesome it was.

1.6 MILLION PEOPLE at that show. It was after the Cold War and the fall of the USSR (United Soviet Socialist Republic). The people had been so oppressed by their government that when they finally had the freedom to go to a metal show, most of Moscow showed up!!! Pantera also played at this show. You need to react to Domination live in Moscow by them. Dimebag has 2 epic guitar solo's in that song. It's a super heavy song, but really shows their talent. Talent is what I love about metal & rock music, they write their own lyrics, they play their own instruments. None of this computer generated shit. I saw Metallica back in 1989, and had all access backstage passes, official guest of Jason Newstead (the bass player at that time). Got to drink beer and smoke some weed with those boys, and the were cool AF!!!

Guys I mean this with the utmost respect. Y’all killed it for just one song. When we went to these concerts we banged our heads for hours. Screaming, singing, yelling METALLICA etc. When we got home we slept for days it seemed and our necks ached until the next concert..lol Concerts back then were absolutely the best ever. They weren’t all packed like this but they sold out arenas and are still selling them out today. When all this virus stuff gets to where we can live again do yourselves a favor and hit up a Metallica, AC/DC or other old school rocker concerts and live. Of course now most aren’t paying attention to the band. They’re recording it and looking at them through the phone screen instead of being there in the moment. If bands like this are too much check out Halestorm w female lead singer& guitarist Lzzy Hale. She freaking rocks. Her band was formed in 2007 so she’s about you guys age and her brother is the drummer. But guys go to one of these awesome concerts Awesome reaction!

This was during the fall of the Iron curtain & the end of USSR's communist regime over eastern Europe. Prior to this time, most of western music was outlawed. So for many of these people, it was their first time hearing this type of music other than what they could get on the black market or heard on underground radio. Metallica was part of this music festival called Monsters of Rock. Pantera & AC/DC were part of it also. I got this concert on DVD for my husband for his last b-day... Another great song by Metallica (same concert) is "Creeping Death" - crazy high energy & Kirk's guitar skills are beyond human. Many other RU-vidrs have reacted to that one. It's a must see! I was living in Germany (US Army base- Karlsruhe) at the time of this concert. I think I actually heard all those Russians chanting "DIE! DIE! DIE!" with James Hetfield during the brief interlude of Creeping Death - LOL! Just an FYI, Metallica is considered to be one of, if not THE, best & biggest heavy metal band...They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame in 2009. They've been at it for 40 years & they're still performing... Well, not now thanks to the pandemic, but they are still making music. Metallica & their groundbreaking music was the inspiration for many younger bands. Enter Sandman was a big crossover hit & brought them into the mainstream audience. Their best stuff came from the early days. Their genius lyrics coupled with amazing musical skills, tackled many important social issues- drug addiction/alcoholism, depression/suicide, anti war/pro military, etc. Please check out some early hits like Master of puppets, Fade to Black, One, Nothing else matters...

In the USSR 1983-1993, heavy rock was the most popular musical direction among young people. Metallica was very popular in the USSR. People came to Moscow from all over the USSR for her concert. The soldiers went awol to be there. There were more than 500,000 people at the concert. It took place at the airfield in Tushino (Moscow).

I found y'all through Tom Macdonald reactions but I grew up with Metallica as my all time fav band. I was almost 10 when my older cousin took me to my first concert .. Guns and Roses/ Metallica/ Faith No More in summer 1992. I had already been listening to her records and cassette tapes for several years and liked Metallica at a very young age. This video, I should say this how, was historic. 1.6 million people at the first real mainstream concert of foreign artists after the cold war, I've watched the entire show on youtube and you can see and feel the passion and love in those Russian people's faces at the time, they were having a blast! I am aware of all the deaths, rapes, assaults, and other crimes that occurred, it was tragic. The military was beating people to death because the Russian military had never seen a metal concert, they though kids noshing was actual violence. I dont recall exactly but I think it was something like 60 deaths and almost as many rapes. With 1.6 million people, as sad as it is it's a miracle ot wasn't worse. But Metallica definitely rocked that night. It was a short show by Metallica standards, 90 minutes at a time their average set was over 2 and a half hours. Growing up in America to can't relate to what most of those fans were feeling that day, but it's an amazing thing to watch and I can at least appreciate that crowd and enjoy a really strong 90 minute Metallica show that really shows their energy and passion as musicians. Back and forth energy all the way through, like any other Metallica show, just this one was very very special.
