Yeah, living in a rusty climate I can tell you that a lot of problems come from poor grounds. I spent two days beating my head against the wall when my wife's car wouldn't crank after having replaced an alternator. Turns out the ground strap from the block to the body didn't have any continuity, despite looking like it was in ok shape, just the fact that I touched it was all it needed to fail, but like you said, I spent forever tracing wires, figuring out circuits, ect. I was mad beyond words.

Wouldnt be so bad on some vehicles if people washed got a wash once or twice a week in the winter just to help some. Battery corrosion however, I've had to replace a whole fuse bus panel on a Ford Escspe because the corrosion went through the battery cables and corroded the whole bar.

Another electrical point to check on Peterbilts is the ground wire to the cab near the left front cab mount, have come across many issues with gauges and switches not working correct, and other things, check both ends as it comes from the starter. I had a disc made to install on the low psi turbo on the acerts that I can supply regulated air to the intake system and have found lots of leaks that way the same as you did there. All the SDP have been deleted around my area... thank god.

Just went down the same road. Found a ton of boost leaks and my secondary air was still low after all my repairs. The plug on the bottom of the intake elbow was missing, thought forsure that was my problem. I atleast had ignition on the truck i was working on. A badly plugged dpf will cause low air flow. Ran the air test with the dpf disconnected and my air test results were good

I had a truck (Freightliner with Mercedes OM460) that was brand new. The truck had sat around for years. It needed a wet kit and fith wheel among other things. One day i started the truck. It started and ran fine but there was no throttle response. I cleaned every electircal connection i could find. Nothing looked problematic. The same, no throttle response. I came back to it a month later. I cleaned all the battery and ground connections again. It stared and the throttle worked fine. I have never had another issue with the throttle. It demonstrates how inportant the correct voltage is for the electronic.

when working on a ard head engine the first thing you should do is ohm the glow plug, if its not good then a new ard head is needed, its not in the troubleshooting tree, fuse and filter fittings is, if the glow plug is bad it cant cook the soot out of the head and it plugs up and will never light
@johngoldsmith6629

Checking AMP draw on the ARD head is in the step by step testing procedure. I have two steps, check the not running stuff and then check the running stuff. Then I go into a REGEN, ignition test, what ever procedure is best of fixing the failure.

In New England MA I have had the luxury of being able to remove valve covers with prybars, its much easier than trying to remove the bolts. Most of the time they snap right off and the end exposed to the engine oil can just be removed later with some vice grips.

It all adds up, and during the regen the turbos aren’t really working that hard so they can’t really compensate if there’s much of a leak. I’d bet with boost leaks fixed and running a regen to lower DPF restriction they’ll notice a little more power.

Glad the ECM bolts worked out, took a few try's to find the right lock and bolt. Silicone Sam strikes again. On the Combustion Air Valve you have a port on top and you have one in the front. These are air ports. I made a setup that I screw a test boost sensor in and wire it up to the boost connector. I then run a ASVT and get a reading on turbo side vs inlet manifold side. Have seen the CAC plug up. Quick way to check both sides. Have you ever ran a ARD override test? I like it at 1500 RPM's. I have not been able to find the other side of the connector for the ECM, 120 pin. On 70 and 40 pins, I made bypass harness's. That way I can take the connectors off and hook my test ECM up and not pull the ECM until I know it needs to be replaced. I had one that I tried this test. The pilot was stopped up in the ARD head. So I took the fuel lines off at the ARD head, tied them together and plumbed both lines into the main port. Ran a ignition test and it ignited. Logged a fuel psi fault as pilot psi was reading main. But I verified pilot nozzle was plugged up in the ARD head. If I get a FTI or LOC at the start, I run the ARD heater nozzle test back to back three times. Let it time out, I think it last three minutes each. I then try an ignition test again. If it won't ignite, your wasting your time trying a one hour heat cycle test. When these darn things first came out. I was put on one after several people had tried fixing it. You name it and it was replaced on the REGEN system. It was in a FLT and I ran a ground wire from battery negative to cab and to ground stud on head. It would REGEN with the external wire on. Take it off and engine would not REGEN and sometimes it had a hick up and all REGEN temps went to 32F. I am sure you have seen the DPF so plugged up, you have to take it off and clean it out, so you can get a REGEN started. Good luck, keep me posted. I like to learn on these darn things as they get older who knows what you will find.

I run an 09 t800 with a c13 regen engine. Almost a million miles with an inframe at 660k. One thing ive learned with this truck is that when things are going wrong and nothing makes any sense, its almost always the ard head. Took it to the kw dealer 3 times, and they replaced sensors because the computer told them thats what was wrong. 100 miles down, its back, regen light and a derate. Finally got it to a cat dealer. 3 hrs later and a phone call, yep, ard heads bad. Never fails, once every 12 to 18 months, ard head goes. Other than that, she runs like a top. I'll deal with that over having all the problems with def systems. One wayi found to keep her running good is to switch out a new primary fuel filter evey 6k. If i dont, get a check engine light simply because the fuel pressure drops off just enough it cant regen.

When you come across the next corrosion problem on a battery/cable and it's a bugger to clean, pour some boiling water on it, i just use an electric kettle/jug as it holds a bit and pours easily. And a lot of times that I've come across those v band clamps loose because the previous "makanik" has tightened the nut only without tapping the band around its circumference seating it properly.

I forgot, any time I replace a harness. I get the old bolt out of the connector. Sometimes I bust the connector open and get the bolt and lock. I then try to take the lock off. Or I cut the allen head off if the bolt is damaged and slide the lock off. And last I just drive the bolt out and sometimes the lock is not damaged.

I have been using grease on battery terminals for about 40 years and it always works. I know they say it won’t but it is the most effective and you always have it on hand. Also a caustic liquid (bicarb soda from mum’s pantry) is good for fixing battery corrosion. Soak the terminals in it. Water will work too if you have got all day. Jeff

You wanna talk about a can of worms? Jeebus, Have I got into a good one now! Machine is a 583K pipelayer, which is a D8K crawler modified for laying pipelines. This one had a Fan blade come out of the hub, which in turn jammed into the other blades and destroyed everything up front and busted the front cover of the Engine. (Its a D342) this lead to a gong show to get the front cover off the engine due to piss poor engine design. Once the cover was off, I discovered the engine has over 0.100” of axial crank float. So out comes the engine. (Easier said than done as it weighs 8000lbs) Crank shaft is toast once I got it out. Thrust surface is chewed out bad. So to say its going well is a understatement. Lmao.

depends on the shop but in my experience the customer pays for that the labor rate is the rate no exceptions doesn't matter if engine work or changing a marker light same rate i cant afford to give breaks in cost, and if that stripped bolt needs to come out for said repair it takes what it takes, usually never an issue unless you get a cheap O/O who has money problems because he works to cheap and its everyone elses fault he cant afford repair work but those type of customers im usually to busy to get to there truck haha
