i am so excited we can now grow!!!!! I would never thin. I always give extras to neighbors.

If you try to separate the roots, it will set the plants back. It damages the roots. If you don't need the extra plants, it's better to cut.

I like to start tomato seedlings in red solo cups filled about halfway with seed starting mix. I'll sow about 1.5 seeds per cup on average (more if I know a particular variety has poor germination). When the seedlings are very young (before any true leaves form), I'll make sure the soil is well moistened, then gently lift one of the extras out and relocate it into a new cup where I didn't have any germination. They almost always survive this process, since the root is a tiny little thing. This also avoids the pain of the thinning process, and leaves me with more tomato plants than I quite know what to do with! Then, as they grow, I can just keep adding fresh potting soil (soaked in Alaska fish fertilizer) around the stem, so I don't have to move them again until they're ready to go out into the garden.

If the larger plant is leggy I will thin the thin plant for a smaller robust plant and adjust the light closer so the other seedlings don't get leggy

Love it, I had to laugh when you ate the inferior seedling, kinda like a sci-fi movie, lol!

I hate thinning although it’s a good practice. If I can I will separate them instead. 😊

It hurts me too, but I learned my lesson last year as both seedlings become weak.

I only separate if there is a reason to do so. If you have enough plants, it can do more harm than good by damaging the roots.

Thinning by separation is better more plants is better. Just do it early

I've had good luck with this method. I move them as soon as they pop up and I can see the seed leaves look healthy, well before any true leaves even think about forming. The roots are tiny little things and don't seem to mind it.

What fertilizer are you using on your strawberries? Also can you put together something for blood meal vs bone meal and when to use? Thanks so much
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips 5 месяцев назад
I don't really fertilize my strawberries. I let them go as ground cover for the most part. In a couple weeks, I'll probably have to weed the area and add some compost to fill in the gaps to prepare them for spring, but other than that, I don't do much. I'm sure fertilizer would help them produce more, though, so anything 5-5-5 roughly would be fine.

is it okay to transplant those brassicas fairly deep because sometimes they are fairly thin at the base??
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips 5 месяцев назад
I plant them flush with the soil. I do not plant them deeply. I'm not sure what the "cut-off" depth would be where you could risk harming the plant. You'd have to experiment.

Hi Anthony. Do you have any advice, or even a video, on starting basil seeds alongside tomato seeds? I know tomatoes need to germinate without light. Is the same true for basil? Once germinated, is the care for tomatoes and basil similar until transplanting?
@ObsessiveAboutCats
@ObsessiveAboutCats 5 месяцев назад
Not Anthony, but my tomatoes and basils seem happy with me. My advice: Both tomatoes and basils have pretty similar requirements as far as germination - they like to be covered with a very thin layer of soil and do well with a heating mat. They like a similar temperature range, and they take about as long to be ready for transplant. They both want lots and lots of light as soon as they germinate. After germination, care diverges; tomatoes need to have soil added around their stems so additional roots can form, so either uppot them and plant them up to the bottom leaves, or start them in cups where you can add soil around the stems. Basils need to be uppotted to larger containers, but at the same depth; once multiple sets of true leaves start forming, they'll need to be pruned to encourage branching. Tomatoes need a pretty good balance of nutrients; if you go too nitrogen heavy, you'll get busy plants with little fruit. Millennial Gardener main channel has numerous very thorough vids on this subject and says exactly when to shift between each fertilizer blend. Basils need all nutrients but primarily nitrogen, as you want bushy growth and aren't trying for fruit. So you can start them at the same time, and maybe even in the same seed tray, but once they get going, they'll need different techniques. Also there are many varieties of basil; some, like Thai, end up being huge, so you'll need to space those very different from something like globe basil or Genovese.

It's a lot easier on the seedlings to cut them. If you don't need extra plants, it's better for them.

This is my first time starting seeds and after 1.5 weeks it’s looking more like 25% have germinated 🥲…and only 10% of that is showing a decent growth rate. How long do I wait before starting over or buying new seeds?
