Quite Simply THE WORST FISH & CHIPS YOU'LL EVER WITNESS what an ABOMINATION! What was they thinking? 

I worked in a chip shop while I was studying. A couple from America came in and could not believe it was really happening to them; screaming in our small market town “oh my god, it’s a real life fish and chip shop!” They took pictures out the front of the shop and nearly passed out with the taste sensation. Now I understand this reaction. Thanks Mac Master you legend! That has really cleared things up for me 👌

And now I understand why American visitors rave over the fish & chips they get in the UK. That chip shop wouldn't last a week over here. Cheers!

Those potato things are called scallops (not to be confused with the shellfish version). When done properly, they are delicious. The ones you were given, were not done properly.

At Kermit Weeks museum of flight when I visited there - the cafe did mushy peas!! Incidentally it had one of their aircraft with the Humberside county shield as well :D

FYI Lee..There is a great Fish & Chip place in Lynhurst NJ a bit of a drive but worth it. “The Thistle “.. Scottish Famiy..great place ..cozy ..great fish & chips ..pretty sure haddock ..more of a little restaurant..formerly in Kearny NJ where a lot of the Scottish people immigrated to in the 50’s & 60’s..anyway great place for authentic British Fish & Chips..not sure about the mushy peas I know a fave of yours !!..not sure how long your here but maybe you can go another visit ..anyway ..enjoy your visit !!

Lee I would have left that on the table and got out of there. NYC is the only city I have visited where people are willing to pay so much for crap. Hunt down a place that make a good fried haddock dinner. Or come on up to Boston where we have great seafood.

When l was growing up in Manchester 60 years go, the local chippies offered scallops as an alternative to chips. If l remember correctly, these were oval slices of potato approx.10mm thick fried in batter. Yum yum.

I only visited the states once, in LA everything I ordered was vile. The food is overated and expensive.

They looked vile. Bottom line-if you want proper british grub, get it in Britain. Serving stuff like that looked is them taking the proverbial. Let's see a great American burger soon!

They looked rather insipid. The fish was very thin (I reckon if you held it to the light you would see the light through it). The 'chips' were crinkle cut slices. Not appetising to look at. I rate them -1/10 especially at that price. We are spoilt here in Leeds.

Come on Lee try some other food than just Fish and Chips. You are not going to find perfect fish and chips in NY city as they can't do it. It's like trying to find the perfect Neapolitan Pizza in Wolverhampton compared to Naples. Try authentic New York food, New York deli's, Burghers, Hotdogs and other street food. Try local food trucks - Mexican, Puerto Rican etc. There is more to food than just Fish & Chips. Come on Lee shows us how good New York is.

When you get back to the UK and want to get the taste of that American tat out of your mouth, head to Greenside Fisheries in Pudsey. Proper fish and chips cooked in beef dripping, and they even make their own vinegar!

Why the $5 tip? What was it for? It’s taken for granted so leads to worker exploitation. My mum worked in a fish and chip shop - called those round ones flitters (derived from fritters) - and they never sold mushy peas (that was for southerners and Yorkshire folk).

Lee, you can’t get “proper mushy peas” in the UK anymore. They’re out of a tin and heated up in a microwave. I remember when younger chippies having a stove/cooker at the back, on there they had peas cooking, then they’d drain them before being served. Also gravy was in a pan, remember Holland’s steak and kidney puddings? Sometimes called a suet pudding or rag pudding. It seems all gone now, all microwaved, I found a lovely Whitby fish and chips, not a big name but really good. I live down in Sussex and they have Huss on the menu, not a clue what that is. Also, a lot have skin on, which I don’t like. I think I’d give up to be honest, I also lived in Hove and I had a good chippy there, well 2 chippies who did good fish and chips 🍟

Eat what the locals eat, even they can do home cooking. Clam Chowder, Philly Cheese Steak, Biscuits & Gravy, Bagel & Lox or Pastrami on Rye with hot mustard. It's good stuff if you choose right.

Stick to back home pal for the fish and chips no one does it better!!!!
