You should consider a leak down test. This tells you whether the valves are seating correctly. If they’re not, this could cause low compression as well. These tests are usually done at the same time.
I'm trying this on a boat that has been sitting up for six years. It was suggested that I use this product but that I should take it slow. Spray 2 applications wait 24 to 48 hours, spin prop while in gear then do a compression check. Hope it gives me good results on my Evinrude 115.
I had an old 3 cylinder 60 hp outboard that had 90 psi on all the cylinders after sitting for a few years. motor started and ran still Ran some sea foam in the gas tank and compression came back to 130 psi in all 3 cylinders.
Hay fella, just wanted to say thanks I’ve had an issue with my 4 stroke Suzuki 60df 0psi compression on cylinder 4 didn’t have any sea foam as not widely available in UK so tried AC90 pumped half a can in there left it over night and bingo now getting 150psi cheers again
Looks like you had a sticky ring or two, which is why the penetrating oil works to free it up and get you a better compression.. it's not a miracle cure, but it's enough to get the engine running which is what it needs to do they get the compression rings to seat properly again.... And I noticed that you got good spark there judging by the way you jumped LOL
Putting oil, in this case the seafoam, in the cylinders increases the compression every time it’s the easy way to tell if rings are going bad. Being said, I’m impressed it was still higher after it ran for a bit
@@Dailyfiver I'm not sure about that. Sticking ring doesn't mean it's sticking to the cylinder. The compression is lower with a stuck ring, so it could be easier to crank. A stuck ring could also reduce the oil film, creating more abrasion, so I'm not sure. Other people agree that the test could have been done better, though.
i found this video and you very well may have saved my tail on a little LT80 kids quad also a 2stroke. that had been sitting for a very long time while i slowly rebuilt it . at 1st i thought it was the starter well pulled that and everything was fine . then maybe the relay which it tested within spec on the ohm meter lastly got a new battery for it and it was still kind of struggling i guess from lack of lube tried that 1 time working like it should now . just sprayed a little more not much of deep creep going to letting it sit for 24 hrs before getting some premix fuel and a new plug tomorrow
Just did this to clean the piston rings. Psi 105 to 110 on all 4 to start, then 125 after deep creep, but the deep creep is forming the seal, so it's not a true value. I did do the sea foam shock treatment after the deep creep and I'm getting 118 on all 4 and it runs much better. Running 1989 88hp johnson spl.
I'll be honest with you brother seafoam Deep Creek is very very good stuff I've used it with success the whole problem with your motor it hasn't been used it needs to be taken out and used like a small block Chevy car motor and everything will come back everything kind of has a heard and is sticking because it sat so long take take it out with some fuel treatment and you'll send Dan after running it for a certain amount of hours a decent amount of hours then recheck the compression and you will see the difference
Serious question: do you think it's worth buying and messing around with a used black max condsidering how old they are? I had one a long long time ago and rember drilling out corroded bolts, and they just don't get better with age. Thank you
you should run the motor , let it cool then do compression again. if its been sitting, good chance a ring or 2 is just gummed up. those additives did nothing but help seal the rings because they were bone dry from sitting. the power tune is good stuff, however.
If you do the same test with engine oil, I'm sure you would get the same result. Sea Foam surely covers the cylinder surface and the ring, and now they seal better like they would do with any lubricant. The second test should be done after using the running the engine for some time to warm up and burn the lubricant. I do not want to say SeaFoam does not work, many people swear by them and I put them in my tank now and then.
maybe do another compression test before taking it out on the water. adding oil/ext will increase the compression. looks like the piston rings may be worn also does it hold compression is something you should check. anyways thanks for the video! good luck with your boat!
its the same stuff as Merc power tune. Of course you are going to get some compression back with cylinders filled with a penetrant oil. You might even get lucky and those stuck rings in that cylinder might free up without destroying the cross hatch of the cylinder walls. Next step clean the carbs and send it.
But for real, I am so happy for you, these motors are great, the weakest link, if not replaced already, is the original IGN coils as they crap out and short to ground. Which then acts like the kill switch is pulled, so no spark... My one thing I really wanted to do is to send that ECU on the back out and get it upgraded for more advance and to up the rev limiter,!! That alone would be a huge difference in and of itself!! 🙏🙏
Oh, so I just wanted to check in with you and see if you think it's getting some good voltage ⚡⚡ to the spark plugs!?!? 🤣🤣😁😁 Oh I've gotten it more than enough to be able to bust on ya for catching it, and with wet feet no less!!
I say run it but make sure someone can tow you back if the motor doesn't run right did you change the oil in the engine and do a service on it just to make sure everything is good before you put it in the water but you got a deal on that engine
Snake oil my Friend temporary fix believe me that engine is 1 step away from a rebuild , if they even rebuild outboards . Do not trust you could be stuck on the ocean
Detroit Mi. I used to ride and modify Jet skis until my back and knees went but I do know I have tried that stuff yea maybe you did get lucky and the piston ring somehow went back into its original groove . I was never that lucky well I had to rebuild a 2 stroke seadoo motor the 110 horse 2 stroke . I love jet skiing especially riding the supercharged 4 stroke 300s they are like sitting on rockets.
I agree snake oil! all that does when you shoot oil in a low compression cylinder is filling any voids causing the low compression you still have too low of compression difference between that one and the others. bore scope the cylinders and I am sure you will see scratches in the walls of the cylinder
Yup , possibly already idles ruff, rebuilds depend on the bore, to much it will run hot, want to say 30 over is tops but not positive i remember correctly.
putting oi in cyl and improving compression is a positive test for worn rings (try a little straight oil and compression will likely hit 130 ranges). If seized, it might free a stuck ring but usually your compression increases just for testing and a hone/ring job is likely needed at minimum.
Hi, You definitely had a lightly stuck ring on that low compression piston which, frankly, ANY penetrating oil would have released. While we're at it, the true and tried solution pros use for that is a mixture of ATF + acetone (50-50). As to getting the post-Seafoam increased readings in the other cylinders, I'd bet it essentially derives from measuring compression on an originally dry VS a than wet cylinder. Sea Foam is not a bad product at all and surely holds its own against any other of its class (Power Tune, Marvel Mystery Oil, STP etc.) but honestly, its virtues remain short of magical as some users profess. Regards !
