No, see, the thing is, it was cold outside and he was hurt. He needed shelter and help. So first thing you do is look for help, failing that find a shelter. He couldn’t break into the information centre because that’d make it useless as a shelter, so he went the path of finding a keycard. Who expects a monster to be there? As he goes through it, however, he becomes more and more uneasy, feeling like there’s someone or something watching him. Then the Stone hits the window, now he’s proper spooked, but isn’t sure who did it. He learns of the radio and wants to get in there and call for help, so he goes for the keycard. But it gets worse, he sees something in the mine, and that place at the end.... that wasn’t natural. He needs to get out, and nearly gets lost in the process. But finally, he’s out. But now the forest seems to be darker than before. How? It’s still light out. The oak tree by the grate looks twisted too, more so than before. He heads back to the office and calls for help. But he sees it again! It’s right outside the door! Now he’s panicking, he needs to get out of here, get help on the way! No! The thing is blocking the road to the highway! Distract it! Come on, come on, help needs to come soon! Oh no! It’s coming! It’s coming! AAAAAAHHHHHH! So yeah, in a situation like this you go for help and shelter. Office had both. If the flares hadn’t worked and the monster didn’t exist he would’ve been forced to stay in the shelter until the blizzard passed and see if anyone came for him. That’s why you’d kinda of have to go in the mine, short of breaking into the office and ruining it as a shelter.

Well, the door you need to get into is locked by a key card, and the key card, as stated in the note left by the mineshaft elevator, is in the mines. Sooo not really much other choice.

You know, if I was the protagonist I'd much rather just follow the road until I find help rather than going into the mine. There's no blizzard, and it wasn't even that dark. I'd eventually come across a car.

This is how horror stuf works like the movies the family finds crazy thing about the house but still buy the house
