The speed with which this went from " I don't care if I die, I just wanna golf" to "I don't care where the fucking ball went, I just wanna live" is truly admirable.
The zombies and eldritch god at the end were terrifying but I'm more terrified of the protagonist! They were completely unperturbed by the zombies arrivals and appearances. Even refusing to acknowledge them and instead focusing on the game. They were able to frighten anyone that they talked to. Notice how the guard quickly loses his confidence while talking to them? And how the club member quickly becomes more frightened by them after giving his warning? They clearly do something that scares these people. Even the eldritch god at the end acknowledges them! Stating "Now I realize who I'm talking to!" Hinting to the fact that he already knows or has heard of the protagonist. Why would a God show recognition towards a normal golf player? Easy. They aren't human. My guess is that they are another eldritch god. He reinforces this theory by stating "You cannot keep that world! I will take your dinner from you!" Alluding to the fact that they are in control of the world and are eating its populace. More evidence is the fact that they immediately knew how to kill the God and were completely unfazed by its appearance. You'd think that a smiling demon God would scare a normal golf player shitless wouldn't ya? But no! They immediately think "KILL" in a very adamant way. Maybe they have done this before. Maybe they have already fought this God before and that's how he knows them. I don't know too much but this is my theory based off of what I've seen. I also think I'm reading into this too much but it's 3:00 am and I'm too tired to stop typing now.
That's a very interesting read of the game. I LOVE your theory. At the beginning of the game, the player is blocked by a wall of text, seemingly like it's overriding the senses and the mind of the host. Going by your theory, it could be that the player is another higher being, possessing the body of this man at the golf course in order to kill the evil god. It makes sense because at the end after the boss fight, the guy doesn't know what he's doing there or even where he is.
It's a very HP Lovecraft scenario we're presented with. A guy REALLY wants to play golf, and ends up killing an Eldritch abomination that's been summoned by cannibal lawn are workers. Clearly, the player is a mortal being controlled/guided by some unseen force to take down the Tree Demon. Whatever it was, it chose the player as its avatar/pawn. We just witnessed a God using a golf club to smack another God out of its territory.
Am I the only one that thought the character you play as in the game has to be insane? First: That wall at the beginning telling you why you can't leave. (You love golf too much) Second: The NPCs and the dialogue options are so weird, and the expressions on their faces are fearful of YOU. YOU are creeping THEM out. Third: The character doesn't give a shit about any paranormal activity or the undead, NOTHING will stop you from golfing.
@@ilikebeanies3499 Your character is straight up possessed, judging by the dialogue from the big bad and the fact that the inner monologue font changes at the end, with them suddenly unaware of where they are.
Whenever the camera zooms in to the person's face, it feels like you are making them uncomfortable for some reason. Which makes it way funnier with the simple dialogue options.
I love how it makes me think about why the main characters keeps golfing even when confronted with dead bodies and zombies. Like, without having seen that barrier it seems like the main character is just doing this for no reason, or you could give the game the benefit of the doubt and assume he was a brave hero who knew about this curse or whatever and chose to fight it head on. But having seen that barrier with that crazy person text in it makes it so much funnier. Because now it seems like you're just playing as a guy who is just REALLY into golf. And whenever he sees life threatening dangers he is just like ''Gotta keep playing golf! Gotta keep playing golf!''
I mean the player character could be paying for a membership, they just wanted to golf, and the place not being open at that time/day wasn't going to stop them.
makes sense honestly, its sorta how like during a multiple choice test putting the first thing that pops into your head is more often than not correct.
Genesis 1.27 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. This means that god only created 2 GENDERS, not infinite, trans, or non-binary, just 2. But… 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. This means i hope and believe that god can change your heart, life, and perspective, all you need to do is pray. But more importantly… John 3:16 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. So no matter what we do, god loves us just the way we are. God does not hate people (he hates the sin though) and he just wants the best for you. Also remember, no matter how many surgeries or implants or whatever you do to change your outside appearance, god always knows what you are internally, and what sex you are assigned at birth. For example if you are (cis gender) male, no amount of surgeries/modifications can make you 100% female, or whatever “gender” you want to be, because it is just not natural).
This is actually really scary. No random jumpscares, but constant anxiety because you're not able to look away from the zombies for too long while having to look away to play golf. And you can't look at them for too long either or they'll go crazy and kill you even faster.
I’m actually quite invested in this universe and story 😭 like why were the people freaked out while talking to the golfer? Why did the god recognize them? I’m so intrigued. I understand that theories exist but I hope to have this world expanded by the devs. Regardless I’ll probably follow them anyway now because holy damn that was so effective at creating anxiety
I absolutely love the challenge of: "how can I make golf scary?" Being pulled off so well, not to mention the quality of the experiance as well for a small indie game! Super cool stuff!
Yes definitely. It's so original, it seems like they made most, if not all- the assets in the game, themselves. AND a song. And you know, the whole killing a god after you're done golfing plot- that's the last thing you expect.
i was also super impressed with this game, i really hope more people post playthroughs! (i would love to play myself but my laptop sucks balls so i cant really play many of these fun little indie games that i want to smh) and the in game manual (tutorial) was a fantastic little touch, reminded me of happy’s humble burger farm’s manual which i also loved
did Jacksepticeje forgot about the nostalgic game OXENFRRE ....the second game just came out called OXENFREE ..LOST SIGNALS 📶📻👻 I WATCHED HIM PLAY THAT GAME 7 YEARS AGO.... and I can't wait to see him play the new one😢
I haven’t watched a game play that’s actually made me tense since I was like 10. Whoever made this game gets my seal of absolutely terrifying game maker.

I feel the same way. The soundtrack in itself is so taunting, that it feels like it is an enemy itself. I love the visuals as well, there's much nice little details here and there, but after watching this I really feel like horror is 90% music driven. Silent Hill has famously good soundtrack for example. But yeah, that and escalating story gradually, creeping in new stuff, being straightforward, and making environment that wants to push you out.
I mean it seems you have to look a bit to keep them from moving towards you. Red light, green light rules and all that, but yeah just standing there and staring is probably not intended.
You were supposed to kill the guy stalking you at the end with the light balls. That's why the game says "the ball removes flesh" when you die. It wasn't supposed to be as tedious as you experienced.
Yeah, to be fair they don’t look very fleshy so the instructions are a little unclear lol, I imagine he probably just assumed it meant that the balls would pop that fleshy pimple thing.
no same it actually made me feel sick to my stomach to watch. horror games are always about "the unknown" but being able to see those guys right there was terrifying.
Ikr? I didnt realize how unscary a lot of newer horor games have been. For whatever reason this was such a scary game and fr had me like jump. I havent done that in so long
i love the fact that based on what i see in the game, there was nothing stopping him... from just walking to the end of the course at the first sighting of something creepy. yet he decided to continue golfing while stalkers were coming to kill him

jumpscare warnings, since it seems no-one's done it yet :) 9:15 mild 23:58 hot 25:24 mild 27:33 mild 28:39 medium 30:35 hot 31:24 medium 31:33 hot 37:18 mild 38:52 - 45:25 mild/medium flashing throughout 40:30 mild 44:01 medium 45:58 mild 46:17 hot 47:50 medium hope this helps other people who need to anticipate jumpscares :)))
@dm__1 how's he hating? He told his opinion. Both Jimmy and Jack talked about it behind the scenes and they are good now. So why are you trying to start shite that's already been squashed??
I thought the plot was going to end up being that the player was the killer, so obsessed with golfing that they would murder the staff for trying to kick them out after closing.
What do you mean? Of course golf is what the game is about. Everything is about golf. The world revolves around golf. We all love gold. I love golf. Golf. Golf. Golf. Golf. Go lf. Gol f. Go..f G lf. G
I love that it feels like it's implied the player character is also like, not right lol. The fact that people are freaked out of you as you're talking and the final boss says he wants to make the player "spill out" I wonder what sort of secrets the PC is hiding too lol
Ahaaa I love seeing something unexpected and tense shake up the Indie horror game genre. The hand-crafted uncanny vibe, the art/animation style, the subtlty of the scares, the paranoia inducing music and atmosphere... This was an absolute banger, the jumpscares got me just as bad as Jack. Mad props to the game devs and everyone who worked on this game for creating such an amazing horror experience. AAAH and the soundtrack is on Spotify, I'm gonna be bopping to greener grass awaits you all weekend now...
Usually I just squirm and get really nervous during horror games, this game succeeded in making me plead with Sean through the screen, "Sean for the love of god tuRN AROUND SEAN!"
this game was surprisingly SO COOL. the "boss fight" was literally so cool, i havent seen something like that with the theme of golf before and the music was SICK. the design was so goddamn good. the buildup was done so well. the graphics were simple yet stylized? and it was quite pleasant. the interactions with people as you progress was goofy and something i havent seen done like it in a video game. overall, just really good. and the first scare with being followed actually gave me the spooks!
The theory is that when you "choose your body" at the beginning, you're an Eldritch god possessing the golfer. You make your way through the course to go defeat the guy at the end. Notice how when you wake up at the end, your font is all perfect and neat? The instructions you saw through the game were the god inside you controlling what you need to do next.
To add to that, notice how every person that spoke to you always seem confused - almost disturbed while looking at you? Their growing horror increases as it zooms in on their faces, until they finally decide to leave because they're too uncomfortable around you.
I'll be honest I get so tired of "lore" being the main thing people focus on in a game. It has led to a lot of bad games and a load of stagnation in the horror genre as so many jumped on the mascot horror train and figured out that the ticket aboard is just having lore (hello neighbor being 1 of the few to try and fail). But this has me going "ok I can accept that things just turned out this way and a bad golfer just happened to stumble across some weird ritual." But at the same time I'm going "wait did the lawn care people do this? Are they sacrificing people for greener grass? What was in that shed? Did the club know about it?" This is the sort of thing I want to know more about not something purposefully made mysterious so that I'll dig. Hate to say it but it's like the 1st FNAF in how it's got that "wtf is going on?" Gel to it that's kinda self contained. The game isn't about finding that out it's about playing it.
Yeah, that's what I got out of it. "Greener Grass Awaits" is actually some form of cult and had transformed the entire golf course into some form of ritual grounds. The only way to reach the entity at the end was to golf all twelve holes. ...I can't think of any other reason why the entity was forcing the guy to golf even when being chased by vampire cultists. It was the key.
Frick-Er-Ations, this game. It really blended horror and silliness real well (especially the commercial at the end, what even was that??) Oh crap, I wanna talk about my theories on this story SO bad- It's clear now that right until the game ended, we were never human. Before the game even started- it said "pick your body" rather than pick your skin tone. Then, the uncanny interactions we had with the workers. We stared at them for an unnecessarily long time before answering their questions, to the point it made them visibly uncomfortable. Lastly, the "god" or whatever it was recognized that we weren't human. "I shall steal your dinner from you" pretty much made clear what our intentions are. Finally, the ending (NOT the commercial). We find ourselves outside of the golf club confused, wondering why we were there in the first place. It might just be me, but I'm sure that the font changed compared to what it was at the start. Needless to say, our mission wasn't to play golf, but to destroy this entity before it took over Earth (because that's what WE want to do). We just couldn't do much at the beginning because of the meat suit we chose to wear. (I don't think we could've gotten in the golf club as ourselves, after all.) I don't know why we had to play golf while doing it, but either we had a need to blend in... Or we just wanted to have some fun before sending the meal-stealing-bastard to Hell.
It's more to say that we are human, but empowered (slightly) and ordered around by an otherworldly entity that had a very vest interest in not letting some other entity into the world.
I could see this being an interesting prototype for an archery game. You have to hit targets, the closer to the bullseye the better, missing a shot counts against your score, but there are zombies slowly chasing you. You can shoot the zombies with the bow, but it will only slow them down, not kill them, and hitting the zombies is NOT hitting the target, so you lose points for doing that. Each level adds a fresh zombie on top of the ones you've already been dealing with, and damage carries over (if you take negatives to slow the zombies down, they'll stay slower, but your score also suffers overall from taking those shots). The only way to get a perfect score is to not shoot the zombies at all and get a bullseye on every target, but the zombies will put more and more pressure on you as the game progresses.
I went to see what the average Country Club Membership is, and of course it varies quite a bit. And by a bit I mean by a lot. Initial costs to join average between $700 to $25,000. And then monthly fees on top of that, ranging on average from $70 to $1,500 per month (so you were pretty spot on with your $1400/month!). The most prestigious clubs (in the US) cost between $275,000 and $550,000 to join. Imagine being willing to spend that to go stand in the sun and golf lmao.
went into this with no idea what to expect and it ended up being one of my favorite horror games sean has played, the vibes, music, scares etc. were so good.
Came here from DanandPhilgames - I've discovered that this is way more agonizing if you know the story... ^w^'' The devs really know their shit, lot's of respect to them! Also Jack you did good, impressive!
Wow. This seriously freaked me out and made me legitimately anxious just watching it! I can’t imagine Fr playing it. They did a hella good job on this game ! But omg I hate it so much lmao
That song is good enough that I skipped back to hear it again at the end of the video. This game was not just better conceptually than I expected it to be, but also so beautiful too? Really cool game, and as always, amazing gameplay and commentary by Jack!

havent had a horror game scare me that bad in a long time, especially not just in a youtube video. the section at 39:05 onwards after i realized the statues were MOVING and swapping positions when jack looked away genuinely made me stop, pause, and take a breather
Yo this game was really good! The pressure of having the people chase you while trying to golf, the music/sound effects, the dramatic zoom when talking to people?? I do feel like the 'I'm your God' villain is a little overdone in horror but the rest of the game definitely made up for it.
Combining the frustrations of digital golf with the creepiness of people following you is SO good. The faces flashing in the latter half is also great at making me jumpy (plus the music/high contrast zoom when giving your answers to other people;; the smooth animation?? It's great)
Yeah and not just a cool concept, but very well executed. The dev did a phenomenal job. So creative and unique with not only the gameplay, but the graphics, along with pretty much everything else. 😉😉
Wow, I haven’t had to hide in the comments for a while. This game felt like when horror actually used to be scary. Either that or it just spiked my fight or flight response 😭

As someone who works at a golf country club, I'm telling you right now, those fields are made of blood money. Also thank you for unlocking a new paranoia for me when I go to work, I will forever look at the golf course looking for a dead body staring back at me. :D
