Got a 2020 Insight ex. Love it. Stop and go traffic on my 24 mile commute in Los Angeles give me insane gas mileage. Round trip average (close to 50 miles) is over 65 mpg with careful driving. My record for commute home (24 miles, somewhat slight downhill, in traffic) is 86.4 MPG ! I've twice gotten close to that, so it's not an aberration. Owned for 3 weeks.

These videos need another category: the biggest gun you can stick in the glove compartment. My 2017 Chevy Sonic has a small top glove compartment that will accommodate an emergency smartphone and a Ruger LC9 9mm pocket pistol. My '99 Saturn SL1 had a larger glove box that could fit a Glock 36 Slimline in .45 ACP or a 2.5" Charter Arms Bulldog double action revolver in .44 Special. A friend has a 1950 Hudson (if I remember right) that had an immense glove box that you could nearly stick your arm all the way in.

My first one was a 2003 and I drove it over 200,000 miles. I sold it and found a low mileage 2006. A typical reliable Honda product! I routinely get 70 MPG on the freeway. Both of mine have manual transmissions as they can get much better mileage than the CVT.

CVT has always better gas mileage precisely on newer cars because they are bigger and made of steel unlike the older insigt that was made using aluminium
@analogdesigner-Jay

@@carholic-sz3qv, I like the manual transmission because I can coast down long hills (provided the battery is fully charged) while the engine is idling. Also a manual transmission has less parasitic losses and much better longevity. It's true that most persons prefer a CVT.

Yeeeesssss, finally!!! Thank you Scotty very much for featuring someone with a 2000-2006 Honda Insight in this episode. These cars are underdogs when it comes to affordable quality, reliability and most importantly, gas mileage. I also have a silver 2001 manual Insight and was about to send you a clip of mine for people to get some 'insight' about these little monsters. Thanks again.

@lesliehorwinkle
@lesliehorwinkle 5 лет назад
A buddy got an early one. I always told him I liked the Prius better because it was bigger, heavier felt more like a real car. The Honda had expensive hard tires (loud and rode poorly) even and slamming the hood or door would (could) bend it. 1800#'s that's pretty light. 1000 of that was prob. safety equipment. laughs.

@madPaulX . You are right. The best way to save gas in any car is, make sure the tires have proper air pressure as an improper air pressure will cause your tires to drag and reduce gas mileage, lowering the weight of your car also helps because it's a lighter load so your engine doesn't need to work as hard as a heavier load, keeping the A/C off because the A/C takes power from the engine to run the compressor, which means more fuel is consumed, keeping the windows rolled up, because lowering the windows creates loss of aerodynamics and extra wind resistance, which will lower gas mileage, being heavy on the gas pedal and going faster obviously uses more gas, so drive more conservatively, and driving in higher gears which reduces RPM's and ultimately power, will give you better gas mileage, higher gears at lower speeds results in better gas mileage because the RPM's on the engine is lower, and you will get better gas mileage at the cost of performance, properly maintaining your car contributes to better gas mileage, oil changes, good quality gas, and other simple things give you better gas mileage, and the last thing I'll say that gives you better gas mileage although it is highly debatable, is keeping the exterior of your car clean, sometimes you may notice a car drives better when it's clean, although this is up for debate, I believe that dirt and grime slightly reduces the aerodynamic capabilities by not allowing air to clearly and smoothly pass over the car, but this is debatable so I can't guarantee if this makes a difference or not, but I prefer a clean car anyway. These tips will surely give you a noticeable boost in gas mileage but know that every car is different, so results may vary.

@@JDMHaze you cant go wrong with either. The honda, i think its beautiful. Just plain gorgeous. The reason why i ended up going for the Toyota is because of their known reliability. i talked to a lot of people with these and they are passed 300,000 miles and no issues. ebay is full of people selling toyota batteries at very cheap because they are just so many prius all over. But honda has a 10/10 in design exterior and interior.

I was really happy to see this being reviewed and it gave me a new appreciation for the car. However, I find the lack of power is frustrating climbing hills. Even worse with ac on. The lack of storage space . I have one exactly like Oscars. 2001 manual. Red. It was given to me by a friend who is sort of an eco freak- (He currently has a full electric car and Subaru suv.) I currently have 173K miles on it. Mileage is 50 around a small town. When I drive an hour 15 min to Las Vegas I can get close to 56 mpg freeway. What I have had a problem with is that the car has had 4 hybrid batteries. 1.Original 2. Battery replaced before I got it before warranty ran out at 100k in 2010. 3. 2015- Hybrid Battery went bad. Replaced w a Dorman 3rd party. Cost about $3000. 4. 2017- Battery Modules went bad. (You have to check the SUB CODES on the OBDM port to determine what is actually going on. Can be done with a paper clip. Thanks to the online Insight Central group of Insight owners for that tidbit.) 2 mechanics didn't even know about sub codes! (One of whom was the former repair manager at a CA Honda Dealer!) Luckily it was still under warranty. But would not have been covered with just the regular diagnosis code that came up. What I have been told is that you can only get an original battery when bought new. All others are refurbished. And typically all the modules are not tested. If one goes bad it will drain them all over time. Honda batteries cost $5K. There are 20 battery modules in the hybrid battery. You're driving around sitting in a huge battery field. How good is that for your health? I do get a lot of men asking me about the car. Don't see too many of these in Nevada. But in CA. Lots more. Definitely catches people's eye.

Big Lou - A $35k Civic better do something well. Especially something that has a Type-R badge slapped onto it. I’m talking about their more mainstream offerings. In the past, even their bread-and-butter cars had an element of performance and substance to them. They were just about as reliable as the Toyotas of the time, but they had something that arguably most Toyotas have never had - character. Fast forward to today and Honda’s reliability has fallen and corporate culture seems to be creeping in and that’s a shame.
