I had a 25 dollar dress, and we paid the preacher 20 bucks. I got married at a friends house and we picked flowers from the yard. Cake was home baked. Bad part was that my wedding dress caught fire from one of the candles we had lit...43 years later, we're still married! Yes I still have the dress. Less expensive weddings can be done and the memories will be just as wonderful!

If you are still not sure about the relationship or the person, why on earth are you even considering proposing? You only propose when you’re SURE you want to spend the rest of your life with that person. Life is not a trial run. Don’t waste each other’s time, especially your partner’s! You potentially want her to wait a couple of years before you tell her she’s not the one? Sheesh! That’s harsh…so harsh.

Here's the thing- If this is the right person, you will work out whatever you think you need to "learn" by "shacking up." If you doubt your ability or her ability to make it work regardless of the challenges that always come, either she isn't the right person, or she isn't yet. Either way, living together doesn't solve anything. But what do I know as a 50 year old whose been married to the same wonderful woman since he was 21

People focus too much on rings, do they do this much investment in premarital counseling? Who would know if it’s a $500 ring vs a 10k ring? And even if people know does that make your marriage less valid? This is one of those American things I just don’t understand at all. Grab that cash and put it towards a down payment on a house or heck on a “nice big wedding” or on a honeymoon

It's not that buying an engagement ring affects divorce, it's that the type of people who are likely to fail at marriage also tend to like stuff like expensive jewelry. So if you happen to have the money to afford something better it's not going to affect your marriage. You're marriage will be successful or it won't because of who you and your partner are.

The reason a woman doesn’t need to be tried on like a shoe first is because then no woman would fit. When a woman doesn’t fit into your life, then adjustments have to be made in order make her fit. It requires work from both sides to make it work.

Honestly the more expensive a wedding the more I’m thinking they will have a divorce or at least some really rough times. Just from seeing the people around me the more they spend on a wedding the more it seems they are trying to prove to the world that they are making the right choice and it’s not turned out that way. Expensive weddings I’ve seen end divorced, with children outside the marriage, domestic abuse, or emotional separation.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Sweat equity into your wedding can save you a bundle, especially if you, your intended, and/or friends & family are creative types & bargain hunters. My wife & I had a beautiful wedding and reception in 2000, for just $5k. Neither of us felt cheated, the homemade cake was the best wedding cake either of us has had before or since (devil's food with raspberry buttercream, my own frosting recipe), and everybody had a ball.

Living with someone before getting married is not a bad idea, but you have to give yourself a deadline to make a decision on whether that's the person you want to be married to. Is that deadline set by when your lease ends? What if after 2-3 months living together you realize your lifestyles or habits are too different to be living together peacefully? What if she snores or always set the kitchen on fire but your lease is not done for another 10 months? Living together is not always a good tool to test whether that's the right person for you. I would suggest during your courtship spend as much time and effort to get to know each other, asking the right kinds of questions that would help you to make decision on whether to move in together or getting married. Living together doesn't improve your relationship, just like having a child together doesn't save your broken marriage.

I would guess the statistics that show that the people who don’t live together prior to marriage have a higher success rate of marriage is BS because what it doesn’t factor in is that they are the same sort of traditional, religious people who will stay in a marriage despite being miserable, used, abused, etc. In today’s day and age it is absolutely crazy to not live with someone before getting married. I truly will never understand this.

Dave you slightly misquoted the research on “shacking up before marriage”. While it is 100% true that repeated studies have found a higher rate of divorce in people that move in together while they are still dating. The consensus of those same studies is that there is no statistical significance in the divorce rates among people that move in together after getting engaged vs getting married. So the correct statement to make if you are using those studies as your basis is “don’t shack up before you get engaged”. Now it is 100% to say morally you don’t think people should move in together before marriage but that’s different than the statistics and studies you are talking about.

there is a big difference between being creative vs. being cheap. trying to save every dime by using the cheapest, making the wedding shabby, is not a good start for a life together. Home made can be made well and economical. If both parties care very much about setting up a life together, they can be making every favor, clothing items, and food by themselves to make all the guests weep.

If you work well together under the same roof then it's just chemistry not a ceremony that makes it happen, the main feature for not living together before a sworn commitment is if one or the other wants to end the relationship it is less complicated.

It's hard to imagine a living arrangement more temporary than marriage. I've had roommate situations that lasted longer than most marriages.

@David Tabora That is a sound philosophy. Unfortunately too many people these days believe marriage is the act of entering into a covenant without any real thought to the fact that a covenant is everything that follows. As a divorcee I've come to understand that even if they say they do, it's not so easy to see into their heart or have any certainty their heart won't change. I've also come to understand there are other ways to build a life that doesn't entail doing it around someone else and that for most people we should embrace that idea as it would prevent a lot of destruction and trauma. Marriage is amazing for those who in their heart understand what that means, most people are better off not making a lifelong vow without a challenging rite of ceremony, we as a society should really be discouraging convenient or easy marriages and making it more difficult for people to enter them. Marriages are built on sacrifice and hardship and we romanticize it rather than acknowledge the costs.

Not living together before marriage makes me think of arranged marriages. Your relationship has got to be way more formal and not intimate at all. If you love each other you are inseparable and thus cohabitating, and that's when you decide to get married, IF you feel like it. I don't understand waiting until an antiquated ceremony to live with someone you love. That's practically medieval in formality. Also, just sign the papers for goodness sakes. Save all that showy money and forgo pretending you're royalty for a day and use that for a mortgage or your future family. This is ridiculous.

I'd always say don't buy a house unless you're married but DEFINITELY live together at least a year first. Living together will show you whether it's truly the right person or not.

My wife picked a ring out under 200 bucks. She made her own dress, and we had a nice wedding and moved on. Diamonds are worthless, and it blows my mind that people will spend enough on a wedding that they could have bought a house.

It's too bad that the wedding industry has invaded us in such a way that young people think they need the big expensive wedding. Really, the money spent on weddings would be better spent on a downpayment to a new home or something important in their lives. That one day becomes way more important that the life they will share together. But we all know when that day is over, and all you have is a memory of it (probably a really great memory), that's all it is. Day to day life will show how the relationship will work.
