I worked at a car dealer in college. We had people come back a week after buying a car and beg the dealer to take the car back. I’ve never had a car payment after working there. Never!

I did that once, on the advice of a car salesman I knew, i was 20. Basically went in there same day and told them they had to take it back, i couldnt afford it. They fought me..but it worked.

I dont know how long they had this 60k car for but it just cost them 8,000 to drive a car. This is absolutely insane. I woulda done privet party sale and at least get some money out of it. Crazy.

Used car prices are out the roof right now so I can see why they went the new route, but a $60k ride when your household brings in $120k?? I’m guessing they went to the dealer to buy something cheaper but fell in love with the fancy one and salesman convinced them that it’s a smart purchase..lol

Often for me, I make impulse decisions. I have found that staying out of stores or in this poor lady's case a car dealership is the best thing I can do for myself. Why let temptation stare you in the face? Hope her husband's injury heals quickly and he can get back on his feet soon.

I use to have a 25 thousand truck, had it for a year got rid of it in July. Paid fully for a 06 Honda Civic with 60k only paid 7500, instead making payments on a truck that was in the shop constantly

You might be able to get a better deal with a private sale, but if you're in that much distress just giving it to carmax to be done with it and get your sanity back is money well spent. Sounds like what's happening to her husband is plenty to deal with right now without this.

Lifestyle inflation is REAL in LA! I moved here about a year ago and seeing lambos, ferraris, Mercedes, even half a million dollar rolls royces driving around makes you think you want one too. You actually have to try very hard to not make bad decisions here!

Finance is more than just adding and subtracting numbers. So many of us got in debt for emotional reasons. Trying to feel good, rewarding ourselves. Bipolar in a manic phase will spend like crazy then go into depression with regret only to do the cycle again and again. I like with Dave hits on the emotional side. Got to get that under control or self sabotage will reoccur. Took me awhile to figure that out. If I ever did a financial class I'd address that first.

60k on a car with that income is WAAAAAAAYYYY too much car. 120k/year between two people for a family in LA really isn’t that much. Not to mention she’s not getting any real practical benefit from a car in the 60k price range. All the brands and models at that price are mid level luxury vehicles. There are plenty of new cars/evs/ even base level luxury vehicles with great features in the 30k-40k price range

I'm 47, and have never bought a car over 12.5k in my life. I even feel like the 12.5k was too much to spend, and will likely never spend that much on a vehicle again. And I make over 80k.

In California, no less. So they get taken to the cleaners on income tax, then get taken to the cleaners again on sales tax. $120k in Los Angeles is a modest household income, so you should be driving modest vehicles.

She may lose a little, but she should get out of it fairly quickly. Dave was fairly gentle, given it the car was only 50% of annual income (ie the max recommended). Sounds like it was an impulse buy, and that she is generally more conservative. On big ticket items, never do impulse, think about it for a week, or at least a few days. But I know how she feels, back in my 20s I did an impulse purchase on a lounge suite. I didn't hate, but nor did I love it, and having it sit there as a reminder was bad.

For a lot of people it's really important to resolve to stay away from dealerships. Car salesman can be very good. In general a good salesperson knows how to react based on who comes in as a customer. They know just how to talk to the hesitant customer who's on the fence. Just how to talk to the customer who's gung ho. Just how to talk to the customer who says they probably don't want to buy a car but they're just here to look.
