This the newest video in my Editor Reacts to series. Today I am watching and reacting to Coraline for the first time.
An adventurous 11-year-old girl finds another world that is a strangely idealized version of her frustrating home, but it has sinister secrets.
Coraline is a 2009 American stop-motion animated dark fantasy horror film written and directed by Henry Selick and based on Neil Gaiman's novella of the same name.[5] Produced by Laika as the studio's first feature film, it features the voice talents of Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, Jennifer Saunders, Dawn French, Keith David, John Hodgman, Robert Bailey Jr., and Ian McShane. The film tells the story of its titular character discovering an idealized parallel universe behind a secret door in her new home, unaware that it contains a dark and sinister secret.
The film was theatrically released in the United States on February 6, 2009 by Focus Features after a world premiere at the Portland International Film Festival,[6] and received universal acclaim. The film grossed $16.85 million during its opening weekend, ranking third at the box office,[7] and by the end of its run had grossed over $124 million worldwide, making it the third-highest-grossing stop-motion film of all time after Chicken Run and Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. The film won Annie Awards for Best Music in an Animated Feature Production, Best Character Design in an Animated Feature Production and Best Production Design in an Animated Feature Production, and received nominations for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and a Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film.
Dakota Fanning as Coraline Jones
Teri Hatcher as Melanie "Mel" Jones and The Beldam
Jennifer Saunders as April Spink and her Other World counterpart
Dawn French as Miriam Forcible and her Other World counterpart
John Hodgman as Charlie Jones and The Other Father
John Linnell provides the Other Father's singing voice
Robert Bailey Jr. as Wyborne "Wybie" Lovat
Keith David as The Cat
Ian McShane as Sergei Alexander Bobinsky and his Other World counterpart
Carolyn Crawford as Mrs. Lovat
Aankha Neal, George Selick, and Hannah Kaiser as the Ghost Children
Marina Budovsky and Harry Selick as Coraline's friends back in Pontiac, Michigan
In the summer of 2007, Coraline Jones struggles to adapt to her new life after she and her workaholic parents move from Pontiac, Michigan, to the Pink Palace Apartments in Ashland, Oregon. She meets the landlady's grandson, Wyborne "Wybie" Lovat, and a stray black cat. Later, Wybie retrieves a button-eyed ragdoll that eerily resembles Coraline from his grandmother's trunk and gives it to her. The doll guides Coraline to a small door in the apartment's living room that has a bricked up wall behind it.
That night, a mouse wakes Coraline up and guides her to the door, which is now a portal leading to a parallel universe that resembles the real world. Coraline then meets her Other Mother and Father, button-eyed doppelgängers of her parents who appear more attentive and caring. She returns home the next morning, where Wybie recounts the disappearance of his great aunt. Coraline's neighbors, Sergei Alexander Bobinsky, an eccentric Chernobyl liquidator-turned-gymnast who owns a mouse circus, and retired burlesque actresses April Spink and Miriam Forcible, cryptically warn her about imminent danger.
On the third visit, the Other Mother offers Coraline the opportunity to stay in the Other World permanently, in exchange for having buttons sewn over her eyes. Horrified, Coraline tries to escape back to her world, but the Other Mother prevents her from doing so and imprisons her in a room behind a mirror. There, she meets the ghosts of the Other Mother's victims, one of them being Wybie's great aunt, who all call her the Beldam. They recount how the Beldam used the ragdoll, each time designed after the victim in question, to spy on them and lure them into the Other World. After they accepted the Beldam's offer of having buttons sewn over their eyes, she robbed them of their souls.

Hey, so just to clarify. I had this video ready since the end of september but laika studios kept copyright claiming and blocking it world wide. So a month, 8 edits and a 10 minute shorter reaction later it seems i have finally beaten them. Sorry the editing is so choppy but this truly was the only way i could upload it. Hope you guys enjoy it anyway

"You realize you're walking right into her trap." "I have to go back. They are my parents." "Challenge her, then. She may not play fair, but she won't refuse. She's got a THING for games." The perfect Halloween classic. Fun Fact: The character Wybie Lovat is not in Neil Gaiman's novel. He was created so Coraline would not have to talk to herself and so she would have a friend her own age. Historical Fact: Mr. Bobinsky is wearing the Russian Hero Medal for Service at the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster on April 26, 1986. Which reads on the front "Participant In The Clean-up Campaign" The "4A3C" is a "Chernobilskaya Nuclear Power Plant" indication. This medal is unique as it is the only medal in the world awarded for participation in a nuclear clean up. That might explain his skin complexion and odd behavior. Mythology Fact: The Other Mother's name "Beldam" is an archaic word meaning: a malicious and ugly woman, especially an old one; a witch. It was once traditional on Halloween night for kids to dare each other to knock on the neighborhood Beldam's door (an elderly woman living near them). In many stories, a Beldam closely resembles a spider and lures children into her home with candy and treats, only to trap them inside a cobweb and liquefy their innards with venom. In other variations, the Beldam just traps kids in her home and eats them.

The thing about Coraline's parents is that we're seeing them through a teenager's perspective. In her eyes, they come off as neglectful and cruel. But in reality, they've just moved, Mrs. Jones was recently in an accident (based on her neck brace) and they're having some financial troubles. Her parents just want to settle their troubles before they can do much of anything fun, like spending time with their daughter.

Coraline and her parents both have points in their perspective. I feel like no one brings up the fact that the Jones also didn't have time to even go grocery shopping since Mel literally promises Coraline that she will go food shopping as soon as they are done with their deadline. They didn't just not have time for her, they literally didn't have time to do anything else until they were done

I read this book when I was a bit younger than ten, I think. There is no Wybie in the book. Coraline’s only ally is the cat. :’D I loved it but it definitely creeped me out to no end sldkdjfhf. Horror with tragic elements always gets me the worst, so the other father’s gradual deterioration was particularly upsetting…

I first watched this movie when I was seven and it became my favorite. It fascinated me and scared me at the same time, but that was exactly what I liked about it. It's a cautionary tale, a campfire story... Adults watch horror movies and some kids like horror too. It also depends on the child of course, it's up to the parents to get to know the limits of their kids, but, generally, kids my age were more intrigued than disturbed and some just laughed at the scene with the old woman barely naked. Loved your reaction and how yo encourage Coraline.

LOVED this movie! "The Other Mother" perfectly embodies the manipulative, spidery, narcissistic "mother" that's constantly trying to control the external world around here and the people in it, who never, ever live up to her expectations and so they only ever wish to be free of her that they might find real love and friendship somewhere. The Other Mother feeds, and feeds off of, hey child's dreams and hopes while doing absolutely nothing to help her realize them. Fantastic movie about a little girl escaping a toxic world.

𝙵𝚞𝚗 𝙵𝚊𝚌𝚝𝚜: * Beldame means an old woman, a malicious and ugly woman; especially an old one, a witch. * When the Other Father is “playing” the piano, his song is a warning to Coraline about the Other Mother’s true nature. * If you listen to the Other Mother when she hums, she is literally singing the lullaby from the beginning. You can hear her humming it as well when she’s cooking in the kitchen. * In a way, she is very similar to the Devil himself. They both cannot create but only duplicate and manipulated to make it seem tempting. They both wish gain power, they can’t resist a challenge to try to show how superior they are, they always lie with fake promises, and they both try to gain human souls. The fact that the Other Mother has them let her sow the buttons for eyes, she gains more power and has their souls trapped there. There is an old saying is that the eyes are the windows to the soul. Therefore by having their eyes she has their soul trapped in the Other World.
