I use old school math. Amps x voltage = wattage. I've measured my 8k at 7390.

@@Hellabassguy - That person could have been wired to .35 of an ohm, to get that number, we don't know. Can't just assume they are not being truthful. I get it, alot of people don't understand impedance rise, and wire a 8k @ 1 ohm, & assume they are getting 8k, while dropping down to 10 volts, on stock electrical, while getting 3x impedance rise, & actually really only getting 2,500 watts! But some people know their s**t!

Good show here, but I can compare this to placing one foot in front of the other, walking along to measure distance. All rule of thumb stuff. The fuses on/in car amps are there to reduce the amp from catching fire and burning the vehicle it's in over "protecting" the amp itself. The manufacturer picks the amp rating highest possible so it/they won't blow under full load. That old Boss amp may be able to tickle that number printed on cover under very special conditions, but not for any practical length of time.
@fd1596
@fd1596 Месяц назад
I just add a zero to the fuse ratings. If it has 2x40amp fuses, then it's 800watts. Best case scenario that's the most you should expect.
@JasonWW2000
@JasonWW2000 Месяц назад
You're basically multiplying the fuse rating times 10. That's fine for a class D amplifier that's roughly 80% efficient. If it's a lower efficiency Class A/B amplifier, multiply the fuse rating by 7.
@fd1596
@fd1596 Месяц назад
@JasonWW2000 It's actually at about 70% efficiency given @ most voltage you will more than likely see from a loaded stock electrical system...It's a ballpark figure, which you will never actually know the real output unless you test with proper equipment. Some manufacturers even put false fuses, or larger fuses than required which could still deceive the consumer. You can also look at the total weight to compare amplifiers with the same fuse ratings. Your best bet is to buy from known brands that are known to advertise their real rms ratings.

@CarmilCarAudio- I would like to say, i like your style, for doing video's, as I'm a new subscriber, & this is the 1st video i have seen, on your channel. My friends & i, used to call those outrageously "SUPER HIGH POWER RATED" amplifier rating's I.L.S= they would only be able to "POSSIBLY" hit that crazy #= If- Lightning- Strikes!? So i had to laugh, as your classification/power rating, was almost identical, too funny😉😁😆 I like how you both simplified your explanation on the basic math, so beginers could understand easier. Ive been into car audio since the 80's. The efficiency Range i have seen, testing class A/B amplifiers, has been as low as 30%, to as high as 60%, with maximum power=( @ lowest stable ohm loads), averaging around 45%. Class D amplifiers efficiency, as low as 55%, & as high as 95%, with maximum power=( @ lowest stable ohm loads), averaging around the 75% range. Also, to get the most accurate power #'s, you have to use the actual voltage, & amperage obtained @ the same time= the phase angle= not just setting both meters to peak hold, as this will show a higher power #. To get the most accurate, you would have to record the 2 measuring devices, keep them on realtime, crank up the test tone, & pause the video, & see what the voltage is, & amperage, for that exact second. Keep pausing/checking the video, to get the highest actual #'s, or take 3 different sets of #'s, add them up, then divide by 3, to get your average, true power. Hope this help's. I'm not trying to bust your balls, so i hope you don't think im being a D-bag!? Again great video👍😎

We like to have fun and try to follow the K.I.S.S method. As far as the efficiency ratings you are spot on. When it comes to the testing on the average power you make a great point, alongside with the way we showed provides a peak power more or less. We appreciate the comment and no you are not a D-bag 😅

@@carmilcaraudio2016 - Thank you for taking time to respond. I just remembered, that i seen a BS rated, cheap amplifier, before that did something i had never seen before= It had 2 push in Fuses, can't remember the amperage rating, or the amplifier brand/model. But when the back panel was removed, only 1 of the External fuses was soldiered/connected to the board! It didn't even look close to ever being able to connect to the board. It did not look like a mistake in other words. Imo., it was the intention to decieve the consumer. This is why i like to use the Big Clamp meter,(put around the 0 Ga. Amplifier Power input wires), that i have that can read up to 1,200 Amps of current! I take this amperage, & ✔️ the amplifier Efficiency, using the speaker output voltage, & amperage. But @ Db comps., just to see ball park, the power someone is doing, i will just throw my big clamp meter on the power inputs, 200 amps= 2k, 300 amps 3k, etc. This is much quicker, & less equipment to lug around, so that's what i do, to get a ballpark idea. I have clamped 1,115 amps out of a pair of strapped amplifiers=(2- Twisted Sounds 3,500's)= @ .6 of an ohm= each amp was seeing .3 of an ohm @ rest! These were very under rated, & i was running them off of 16 volt batteries, & charging @ 18 volts!

This is a great video. Lots of good information. Although using a multimeter and a clamp meter to find the wattage does work, it's not very practical in real-world situations. If you want a little meter that gives you real-time information as music plays, look into the power meter from bass head garage. 👍

Though the fancy SMD meter is a super nice tool you do not need it for this, like mentioned above you can find these tools at harbor freight fairly cheap. We use many tools here at the shop some inexpensive and others much pricier, for a hobby the inexpensive option will do fine but if you want to do this day in day out its worth getting the SMD meter.

Car audio is the WORST field of audio, out of all of them, for "wattage is king" scams. Someone will sell you a 2000 watt amplifier for too much money, and it may actually deliver 2000 watts under specific circumstances, and then sell you a subwoofer that will handle the power but it's very inefficient. If you have a sub that is rated 100 dB efficient (100 dB at 1 watt 1 meter) and feed it 100 watts, its output will be 120 dB. If you have a sub that is rated 90 dB efficient, (90 dB at 1 watt 1 meter) and feed it 100 watts, its output will be 110 dB and will require 1000 watts to reach 120 dB. So the unscrupulous dealer, rather than sell you a good 100 watt amp and good 100 dB efficient speaker, to give you a loud 120 dB system, instead sold you a much more expensive 1000 watt amp and a much more expensive, heavy duty 90 dB efficient speaker, to give you the same 120 dBs. You just got RIPPED THE FUCK OFF. You don't NEED high power, you WANT high efficiency speakers and lower power amps that drive them easily. Unless your fantasy is just to consume a lot of electrical power, literally wasting most of it for no benefit.
@ashcoleman8866
@ashcoleman8866 Месяц назад
Those high efficient speakers sometimes cost more than the wattage you are complaining about. The cost per watt has gotten extremely cheap in comparison to high-quality speakers just saying. But I will have to agree. I’ve been doing this since the early 80s you are correct in saying that too.
