But Thomas, i used to load up on carbs post workout when i was bulking, typically these carbs werent the cleanest and often it was fast food, but if what you say is true, then why is it that i gained so much fat when i was bulking? I gained about 50 lb of fat easily (among muscle growth) and i went up to 32% bodyfat level :/. Why cant i get away with it? Is it maybe that i was eating too many calories?
Funny story: I run marathons and ultras and train with a group of people who take their gear pretty $eriously. They taught me to carry GU packets (ketchup sized packets of pure glucose) in a fanny pack- especially if there are a lot of hills or heat. Anyhow, Luke's Locker had a famous old runner come give a little talk/QA and he was asked which glucose he used (if at all) and he said that he just buys A LOT OF Easter candy the day after Easter (on sale) and same with Halloween candy....mini Snickers, jelly beans because they don't melt, Pixie Stix, etc. Neighbors give him their leftover/unwanted candy too. Pretty clever even though he didn't do much for the gear shop and selling their expensive glucose. Ha!! Dean Karnazes uses Pasteli (honey+sesame seeds) on super long runs, but he had bananas when I ran with him for a bit in Dallas.
Here's what I do: WALK after meals, and maybe walk faster after carb meals lol. I eat carb meals pre- resistance training (RT) workout and on those days in the evenings (3 × RT a week means 6 carb meals a week on average). Low carb rest of the week and post-workout meal. Another option, because I do "micro workouts" on off-days (just short circuits throughout the day), is to do one of those after carbs, for example just get a pump and blood flow doing a few sets of BW Squats, Light DB rows, and resistance band chest presses.
I just finished my 2 days fasting and exactly my thoughts! thinking on how to next enjoy my carbs haha. And that explains why I always crave carbs late afternoon til dinner time. But I do 2x exercise, after waking up and after work. Always listen to your body.
I arrived at the same strategy. Carbs at lunch would spike my blood glucose, nothing really alarming but I would like to keep it down. So I eat a ketoish lunch and consume my carbs just before an evening bike ride and at the post ride dinner. Result: blood sugars are very stable throughout the day!
Thank you for making this video. I was a little lost at the beginning but then it all made sense. I am on low carb at the moment, so in the morning i go for a brisk 1 hr walk and then have egg with veggies some days and others alternate with millet/oats with fruits and few nuts. In the evening i alternate weights and stretching... i tend to eat fish for dinner after weights... and when stretching... i go for yoghurt and fruits with very few nuts. I am still trying to find something that works for me but i have to be kind and patient with myself giving it some time to see results. I realize no one size glove fits all and men and women are different. I really appreciate your content. Thank you!
I can eat a Big Mack on the treadmill. Best news all day! lol Great video. I love how you bring the high-tech science back down to the bottom line simple explanation. Thanks!
Sort of helps me to know that I am on target if not a bull's eye with sort of keto or restricted carbs...as a trail runner. Not an excuse to eat carbs but to use as a tool...legs are big muscles and swinging arms. I try to buffer the carbs with ample fiber from healthy vegs.
Still I can't believe or in shock you became strong like this. I have been watching your videos for a while but just recently seen your photos when you were young.
This is interesting. I never agreed with the notion of not exercising after eating. I'd go for runs after Thanksgiving dinner and feel awesome afterwards, while everyone else was in a coma, getting heavier. This also reinforces what Stan Efferding talks about with his walks after eating 👍
What about carbohydrates during surgery recovery? Is it beneficial to consume more carbs or stay keto or low-carb while the body is in such a period of ongoing repair? How would this differ between women and men? Thank you!
I would definitely say do carbohydrates for potential physical therapy. Keto and Intermittent Fasting is known to heal the body over time. I’d recommend Keto and have a certain time in the day where you eat and the other time can be for your body to recover 18:6 Intermittent Fasting helps me a lot. It’s all about what you eat though. Kale, Spinach, Shredded Lettuce Salad with Chicken is great. Before workouts I’d say to have oats or rice/ quinoa and it will help you a lot with energy and recovery and it shouldn’t kick you entirely out of Ketosis if you burn it off which should be really easy. If you stop eating at 4:00 PM you can Break your fast at 10 PM and it would help tremendously. Just speaking from my experiences everyone is different but we are all habitual your body will love you for it.
I had a broken leg not too long ago. Coming from keto/ ultra low carb prior to breaking it, during recovery I started eating a huge sweet potato or two every day with butter and all else constant I maintained my weight and felt quite the same. I'm not sure if low carb would've benefited more in recovery more or not but I didn't notice a difference.
@@Astr0Pr0j3ct Thank you. So that I'm understanding you correctly, are you suggesting more carbohydrates for the initial period (say perhaps 6-8 weeks) post-surgery? Then switching back to keto/IF for continued healing?
@@NMystery Try Intermittent Fasting at least 16 hours. 18-20 is amazing for healing benefits internally. Collagen is amazing for your body as well, organic beef tallow, etc. If you are doing physical therapy I would say take in about 50-100 carbs per day from GOOD sources before or during your session. Squash, Sweet Potato, Quinoa (All 9 Essential Amino Acids are in Quinoa) is perfect, anything that has quality. Avoid all fast food and try making sauerkraut with organic cabbage it’s very simple, it’s amazing for healing as well.
Don't you have to account for the time it takes for digestion? I pretty much go low carb all day and have a carb meal 1 to 1.5 hrs before hitting the weights.
Why do I feel so much more energy after coconut oil than MCT oil? I had been using organic coconut oil from the grocery store in my morning coffee to get me through to lunch. I switched to MCT oil a few weeks ago and my energy levels have slowly plummeted. 1 tablespoon of either in the morning with coffee. Today I switched to 1 tbl spoon of coconut oil and 1/2 tbl spoon of MCT oil and oh boy do I have way more energy. I really don't understand this.
I have a similar approach. I'm pretty fat adapted and I will always argue it's the best and most sustainable energy source. Now, i will say, I do eat carbs pre workout because my pumps go through the roof and I always eat about 50 carbs immediately post workout with no fat and no protein to store glucose into my muscles. It works, I grow faster that way. The rest of the time, I don't eat many carbs. Carbs jack up my blood pressure, make me tired, and make my ass jiggle when I eat them at the wrong times. Spiking insulin right after training works and it works well! A lot of "certified personal trainers" don't even get this. They just tell people, it's all calories in calories out (which does matter) and that insulin spikes throughout the day, either don't happen from cabs, or don't make you fat. Both are very incorrect.
I had some popcorn the other day I ate them and workout immediately and strength training and cardio blood sugars came back down quick. I felt very energetic. I also took some chromium alongside it.
Thanks for all the information you give it really help a lot... Just a comment if you can Make an interview with funk robert he specialized in men over 40, workouts, nutricion,... that will be very interesting... thanks again for all the knowledge
Buy some dextrose powder and use 25/30 grams during the workout divided over how many bottles of water you generally consume. Take a little sip in between the sets and you will feel great.
Also check out Dr. Jason Fung who is one of the top experts in the various fast kinds of fasting. He is a Nephrologist, a doctor who specializes in kidneys.
You are in the right place! Please please please research everything from Dr Jason Fung, Thomas, Dr Eric Berg. You have to and can turn your diabetes around. I lost my Uncle to type 2 Diabetes. It was a slow and awful death. You can turn this around. Start right now! I will be praying for you my friend.
Yo I’m starting intermittent fasting today. Im doing the 16/8 schedule, and my question is, is it ok to workout after breaking a fast? I work from 6-2:30, so I don’t have time to hit the gym during my fasting hours. My job is pretty physical though since I unload trailer trucks all day. But will I still get the same benefits if I workout in the evening?
Man if you already do labor during work, I’d hit the gym right after work (still fasted) for only 30min-1hr then break fast with protein so you can increase protein synthesis.
Indeed, it will have the same benefit effect as Thomas mentioned in this video. Technically, you can "sip" on carbs while you are fasted and doing your heavy physical "workout" job. Your job is a different kind of workout :)
Make sure you eat enough nutrition and calories during 8 hours feeding. Break your fast as with lean protein, like chicken breast. If your job is very hard labor it's considered exercise as you use muscles to lift. Important is to eat properly. Break a fast with protein, avocado, and fat(oils) to avoid insulin spike. Good luck. You will be amazed with the results. And to be consistent, eat the right food and proper nutrition. Doesn't make sense when people fast and eat junk.
@@Hippy2021 Ineed Mary! Totally AGREE with you. Healthy food (nutrition) and healthy calories need to take into consideration during the feeding window! 😉
I agree. But man do I pay for it! Does anyone else pay with harsh cramps in your calves? My gosh! It will make me jump out of bed in the middle of the night!
I miss pizza too, I've been on keto for past 2 months lost 20 lbs....want to go get a small pizza get one slice and add all ingredients from 2 slices and pile them in one slice...😋
You know what back in the day Arnold Schwarzenegger was doing it all the time after exercising... it was mentioned in his book, so he knew that back then already..! 🙌
Arnold is a juicehead lmao. Don't take nutritional advice from a gearhead. Eating carbs after workout will replenish glycogen but why? Are you planning on exercising more? There's no need to replenish glycogen quick after workout. Gluconeogenesis will also do it. In fact, it's better to not eat carbs after because you want the mechanism of gluconeogenesis being used. Programming your body to use fat as often as possible is best.
@@altar1102 I know all about Arnold. I bought his books back when I was a kid and read up all about his knowledge about exercise. Now that I am a adult. I realize how little Arnold really knew and how he relied on synthetic drugs for his results. Vince Gironda had better information about nutrition that Arnold and the other guys must of picked up on. They were on a low carbish diet. Eating and drinking lots of dairy. Arnold in recent years is promoting veganism, he once again does not understand hormones or how to increase testosterone naturally.
My first serious cut ever, I was 20. I did a strict keto diet. Then at the end of my weight session (5x a week) I'd sip 20 grams of dextrose with EAA and take a metformin. Then do 45-60min of moderate intensity cardio.
I’m so confused you have stated In previous videos that almost everytime you workout you are kicked out of keto very rarely you have been able to stay in sooooo Your reasoning was for targeted keto so I know carbs during workout won’t help you stay in ketosis so please explain which is it working iut kicks us out of ketosis or no ? Thank you 🙏 great stuff I’m wanting to use targeted for long distance running after my workout but does this mean I should eat during as opposed to after now ?!
If you’re gonna have carbs, doing it intra workout will increase Glut4 expression which will help ensure those carbs are soaked up by your muscles in the short and long term. Experiment for yourself
What’s the BEST meal to eat after an 16 hour fast for a women? I watched the video that says I whole egg + 2yolks + 2 oz of smoked salmon etc. but bored of that. Any suggestions?
Can glut4 bind to fructose? I believe I’ve been told fructose can only be stored as glycogen in the liver so does that mean it can’t follow the example in this video? (I’m hoping it can bind to it as I’ve just ate a bunch of fruit after a workout 🏋️♀️ 😂)
Does it make sense to combine carbs with deloading workouts? My thinking is that deloads are probably not when you're going to build the most muscle anyways. When doing the heavy duty workouts I would personally be fating and breaking it with proteins afterwards to insure muscle protein synthesis is maximized. Any thoughts?
Hahaha you laughed about having chocolate cake in the middle of a workout but every ultra runner is an ultra runner because of all the mid-run goodies 😋
Take it from me...if you are running 7-8 miles a day and lifting heavy weights for an hour immediately after...you absolutely need carbs. I did keto for 4 years and once I started elevating my daily milage and energy output, carbs became a necessity. The fats were simply not enough to power me through those intense 2-2.5 hour workouts. I would get injured every few months. Since adding fruit back into my diet? I'm Not even getting close to tired or injured during my workouts, and my performance is exploding.
You have incredibly high activity levels. Most folks on this channel just want to get rid of stubborn fat, not run 8 miles per day. I seriously doubt that's Thomas's main audience.
Thomas when you are doing a OMAD keto plan and your eating time is around 1-4 in the evening when you start eating does your ketones stop producing. Thanks
