Rats also have complex language! Most of their vocabulary is on a pitch we can't hear, but they actually are very talkative. There was a study done that proved that rats are capable of describing directions to eachother, warning about specific dangers, and describing which food source was best.

About the plague. Technically the rats are responsible but only because they were already swarming cities at the time. The original infection was likely from human to human contact along Silk Road trade routes while the pandemic itself was caused primarily by fleas that the rats carried around. That coupled with improper hygienic practices at the time was the recipe that almost made all of Europe squad wipe. While that's not technically their fault, it does mean that the scope of the plague was because there were so many rats. Still love the little guys. Also, you forgot to mention that rats squeal and shout when they are happy and excited. So cute.

Actually, it was primarily spread through fleas and the Black Death wasn't the first time, as there was Justinian Plague, when it was first documented. As we all know, fleas aren't picky and rats so happen to reproduce faster than humans do, however, the Norway rat was largely resistant (for some reason) to the Plague carrying fleas.

So, when he got to the part about rats I was so happy. My late pet rat George was one of the greatest companions I've ever had and when she passed I was inconsolable for days. I should point out I was in my late twenties at that time so it's not like I was ten and lost my first pet ever. Having a pet rat is amazing. They'll happily chill on your shoulder while you do whatever you're doing and George had a habit of crawling into my sleeves to take naps. This became such a thing for us that any time I wanted to take her out of her cage I would just stick my arm in and wait for her to crawl into my shirt. She'd usually crawl up my sleeve and out the top to sit on my shoulder for a minute, snuffle in my ear, and say hi before scampering down to my arm and jumping back in my sleeve to take her beauty sleep with just her little pink snoot sticking out. I've had a lot of pets over my life but very few, almost none in fact, have left as indelible a mark on my soul as my sweet little ratty. Rest in peace George. I miss you.
@Xalerdane

This is why I couldn’t ever get a rat. I wouldn’t be able to cope with losing such a wonderful pet after only 2-3 years.
@PFMediaServices

This was wonderful to read, though I know how bittersweet those memories are to get down in words. As someone who's always loved rodents and had several as a kid, this was the one species my mom forbid me to have - she couldn't handle being around those tails. You've re-awakened something in me, and as I'm now an adult you'd think I could just go ahead... but now it's the government forbidding that choice of pet. Besides the weather, that's the least nice thing about living in Alberta. Sure, it's good for farmers and all that, but I also imagine the children like me - and adults, too - who want and would benefit from a companion rat, but don't have that option as long as they're in this province. 😢 What did George look like? How long was she with you?
@ironwolfstudios2857
@ironwolfstudios2857 9 месяцев назад

In summer I go out and buy food from the store, break it up into tiny bits, and feed it to them while sitting on the benches across the shoreline, I’ve had the eldest of a flock eat off of my hand 2 times, and seagulls get comfortable being near and asking for more after giving them specifically. The bad thing is though if they start screeching it means they’re calling their flock because there’s food here. Where I live (Newfoundland), seagulls are harmless
@TruffleSeeker54
@TruffleSeeker54 3 года назад
@Tux Draws I live in New Jersey and the seagulls are vicious. If the birds get too close they would steal food from you and then fight amongst themselves for it. They'll attack you for a slice of bread, they're loud, and if you feed one seagull then 500 more will appear out of nowhere. It's actually illegal now to feed seagulls on the beaches of NJ (it's a $500 fine).

My rats are constantly cleaning themselves and each other, but they love it when I cuddle with them and they will try and groom my hand. They recognize my voice and will rush to the door hoping for treats and cuddles. And they are very smart - they are always exploring anything new and are one of the best furry friends I've ever had! I encourage you, if you don't have enough time for a dog but don't want a hamster, get a rat. In my opinion, the are the canines of the rodent world. Just make sure to do your research first :3

My grandfather was very eccentric and had a whole aviary in his back yard. Not only did he have crown cranes, flamingoes, Pelicans, swans, variety of ducks/smaller birds, macaws, storks, but even had penguins. They had an entirely different set up though with they’re own separate building. That said, of all the birds, the flamingoes were the most skittish. Wouldn’t let anyone near. They’d also move as one. Like you go into their enclosure, or near, and they were all synchronized with their movements. The penguins were definitely the most friendly were the penguins believe it or not. The most unpredictable and scary were the African crown cranes. As a kid, they were taller than me. I would hate when they were out of their separate enclosure bc they’d chase and peck. They do this weird dance which is cool now but as a kid frightening. I adore them now & actually became close to one before my grandpa passed. Tina was one of the few birds left at that point and I got our city zoo to adopt her. I couldn’t let her go to just anybody.

Fun Facts about Maned Wolf: They are very important for the environment because they spread seeds popping, and because they can walk into long distance they are very good at their jobs. They are the tallest canine of the world. Some people reported that their urine smells like weed. And it must be a problem at the zoos, because they produce a particular strong smell, since is their primary way of communication. They mate for life, but they are lone animals, and just see each other during mating seasons or to raise the pups, they are professional at long distance relationships. Their monogamy is a bit of a problem, since they are at risk of extension (because of us: the destruction of their natural habitat, iligial sport hunting and accidents on the roads), when one maned wolf dies and they already mated, their partner won't likely pick a new mate. They are very shy and will rarely attack humans, honest if you were attacked by one of this guys you probably deserved. Only 30% of their diet is meat, they will normally eat small animals, like rats. But there were cases of maned wolves killing deers, so just to be clear, they choose to not use violence.
