I enjoyed this video. I had some dead space in my 40 gallon breeder and I already had an air stone in there so I decided on a set of cheap sunsun wave maker things and they move the water pretty good. Now my only issue is to figure out what light setting to use on my fluval 3.0 so the filament algae stops growing 😆 I've been reading blogs and doing research on co2 in correlation with ph and phosphates and blue light and red light and all kinds of stuff it gets a little complex. I just turn my settings down a bit each each and excel helps inhibit growth some.

Way to go guys! I have saying for years that Tropica Plants are unbeatable in quality! Glad that you chose to sell the best instead of earning the most! They are far from the cheapest. Even when you buy like Vallesneria from them. They almost look like plastic. Best plants in the world right now.

Just my opinion but rather than putting an air stone in a tank to get rid of dead zones I'd make it a small sponge filter. That way you always have a seasoned filter to use anywhere you may need it

I have a total of seven tanks, and other than the tiniest (2.5 gallon), only one is currently without a supplemental sponge filter. Now that I think of it, I should probably add one to it, as well. Not only do you always have one on hand for setting up a new tank quickly, it's extra protection if the main filter fails and you can't replace it immediately.

I put my hang-on-the-back filter on the sides of my tanks rather then the back whenever I can. I get a circular current that flows across the surface and back toward the filter along the bottom of the tank. I have a custom lid that I made out of plastic greenhouse panel to fit around where the filter goes. The filter is also more easily reached for cleaning than if it were at the back.

I like keeping the water as still as possible with Bettas. Just a sponge filter with an airhose valve to set the bubbles low. Females less a problem, they're stronger swimmers, but mind tend to get anxious with too much surface turbulence. I never thought of a Betta sorority until I saw this channel, or even bought female bettas. I started to and I've really enjoyed it.

Great video..thanks John for the knowledge sharing. You certainly were a virtual mentor as I got into the hobby and keeping cichlids. A follow-up good topic to this video could be heater placement, in relation to where you have your filter.
@jasonCOYS
@jasonCOYS Год назад
I usually put heaters by the intake to heat the water before entering the canister. The Tidal HOBs have a clip to attach a heater to it and it’s parallel to the intake.
@bobmorgan476
@bobmorgan476 Год назад
My heater is almost directly below the output of my HOB filter, and not far from the intake either. With good flow, there may be minor fluctuations of a degree or two, but not enough to cause problems. In the wild, many of these fish, or their ancestors, dealt with temperature fluctuations not only from weather and seasonal changes, but also from depth and shifting sunlight/shade patterns.
@sabdelgadir
@sabdelgadir Год назад
@Apistogator thanks for the feedback. I find that I get better temperature uniformity when my heater is placed horizontally versus vertically. I also have it placed below my HOB intake, with the reasoning that heat rises...

In the 70's I had a hand-made tank made out of plywood and 1/4" plate glass in the front. I did all kinds of wrong in those days. I had a hang-on-back that was mounted on the side. I had a piston air pump that looked like a science experiment. I think it fed air into the tank. I had gold and green severums in the tank along with Tanganyika cichlids (but those Lake cichlids didn't care and bred in the rocks anyway). I also fed feeder fish as well. But looking back I'm surprised how successful my tank was back then.

Currently one in the right hand corner to the back and one in the left hand corner toward the front, creating that whirlpool you mention. However I am wondering if putting both on one side could work? I want to get some more plants in that left hand corner is the reason . It’s heavily planted. Can you please let me know your thoughts? I appreciate you!

I was just thinking about how I placed my two Aquaclear 70s in my 60 gallon, which I tried to center (more or less) on either side of the central support bar. The water seems to flow really well, but I wonder if it would have been better to place them closer to the sides of the tank. My fish, including long fin zebra danios, fancy guppies, silver hatchets, and glass catfish, all seem to be doing fine with the current (no pun intended) setup.

Ok the reason for separation of inlet and outlet is to decrease recirculation of filtered water vs unfiltered water. Although I think the benefit is minimal at best. What I base this on is vascular catheters used for hemodialysis { I know totally different} what was found is that the blood would need to be drawn out of the proximal port {upstream to blood flow} and returned via the distal port {Downstream}, blood was 400ml/min, body volume 7l +/- and you could get 5% +/- greater efficiency. Apples to oranges? yes, but still getting them further apart can't hurt.

Sponge Filters are pointless imo since they stay inside the tank and collect all the gunk while taking up space. It’s like having a dirty exposed air filter on your kitchen table while eating. HOB Filters are only good for short width tanks (Under 20gl) unless the filter width matches it since the intake and outflow are parallel to one another in one lane but at least it transports debris away from the main water column. Canister Filters are the best in general especially for larger tanks since they fully circulate the water from one end to the other while transporting all the debris further away from the water column.

@dawnt6791 Год назад
The advantage of heavily planted, lightly stocked tanks, yes! I have Nicrew internal filters on all of my tanks now (all rated lower than the tank sizes). Just replaced the final 2 HOBs, in fact. I'm only running them for a few hours at night when lights are off for water circulation and surface agitation. It's not really necessary, but it agitates the surface and makes sure nutrients are well distributed for plants, as well as keeping any floating particles cleared from the water (I know they aren't harmful, I just don't like the way they look). I love the fact I'm not reliant on mechanical "life support" for my tanks, though. I rely on bacteria on all the hardscape, plants, glass, and substrate to do my filtering. I don't plan to ever have a tank again that's stocked in a way that requires more than minimal filtration (due to lack of plants or large fish or overstocking). I can certainly see why some folks need a lot of filtration, though, especially those with BIG fish who can't have plants.

Why isn't putting a HOB filter on the end of an aquarium talked about much? I think it makes perfect sense to hang one on one end and flow the filtered water as far away from the intake as possible
