This Time the TRANGIA May Have FINALLY MET ITS MATCH! - Goshawk Steampunk (Not Clickbait!)

We have looked at many, many alcohol stoves on the channel. In the end when it comes to comparisons, it seems that I always fall back on the tried and true Trangia spirit burner as my favorite. I recently ran across a very interesting stove from the company Goshawk out of Australia. Have I finally found a Trangia Replacement?!

A strong testament to how good the Trangia is if you’ve been trying to find something to better for or 10 years, just saying. Yes I own a Trangia and love it as well.

Still using the Trangia I was issued in the Swedish army in 1991, no maintenance, not even had to replace the rubber gasket... Maybe this one is better but I think it needs to be tested for a few years before anyone can really say that :-)

Great comparison. One thing I'm not sure mentioned is... There is a lot to be said for 10 year's experience with a piece of gear, especially if you have to replace it quickly. The Trangia is available in most near-trail stores, at least on the AT in VA. And if it's an ounce different in weight this way or that, or not DRAMATICALLY more efficient, I would go with proven gear and the experience in using it. My trangias have NEVER failed, in now 15 years. 👍

I was going to write that Trangia were always sold or used with wider pots over their wider flame pattern. However it seems more people use smaller, narrower pots where siphon designed pattterns may be more efficient.

Greetings from Norway. Hope everybody is safe. I really love the topical video series about the Trangia and it's competition. But not for the Trangia&Co relevance, at least here in Norway, but more for nostalgic reasons. Me, like many others, grew up with the Trangia burner and it's full set of stand, windscreen, kettles and so forth. Brings back good memories. However, I don't know anyone that use the burner or the complete set anymore. For myself, I think the last time I used it on a hike was in the late 90s. Funny story, on a winter hike together with a buddy ("alternative" guy, ha ha ha) in 2007, I used the Primus Omnifuel to cook some food. He got kinda angry, and complained about the loud noise from the Omnifuel burner. He said: "Next time HE will bring a more suitable stove. Sure enough, the last time I saw the Trangia in use was on another winter hike with him, the year after. I remember I was surprised to see the Trangia burner, and got him angry again by calling it a "fossil". Nevertheless, is was quiet, brought indeed back memories, but man, it took forever to cock food:-).
@Funkteon
@Funkteon 3 года назад
It takes about 50% longer than a gas burner to heat up a thicker frying pan to cook meat such as fish or spam... When you're out hiking, you shouldn't be in any kind of rush to cook food, even if you're super hungry at the end of the day..
@palbal
@palbal 3 года назад
@@Funkteon Agree. However, at least in the conditions we have up here, for me it's important to heat up the food faster and burn more efficient for warmth in the winter.

Phenomenal stove when comparing boil time to total time. Should boil with just over 1/2 ounce under your test conditions. I gave up on all this years ago - these stoves all seem over-engineered to me. I now simply use a small tin filled with ceramic wicking material. Very cheap. Very light. Nothing to go wrong. Stable and spill-proof. Easy to fire up - even in the cold. Fast boil. Is it slightly less efficient? I don't know because any difference would be too minor to bother about. My stove obsession has been laid to rest.

Re-released with a new pot stand called the fireside instead of thst gear. Protects more from wind and doesn’t have these problems. Lighter, Burns hotter and longer, boils faster, more efficiently, transfers heat more evenly to the pots. Blue flame means complete combustion so it imparts less soot onto pots. All minor but significant advantages. I'm ordering one, for 22€ it's not bad.

Trangia have said they don’t believe that titanium or aluminium work as well as brass for the stove. They have been making them for decades and they obviously have a lot of experience with both aluminium and titanium. If you like the Trangia, the brass is an important part of the performance and efficiency. If you want a lighter version, Evernew and Lixada can provide that. Neither are a perfect replacement, they are both lighter, the Evernew is hotter and boils faster but uses more fuel and doesn’t have a simmer ring or a screw top. The Lixada is very well priced but it doesn’t bloom quickly and it’s nothing like as good in cold weather. There are many things going on with the brass body and the tiny, unnoticeable features of the Trangia that make it superior.

@@AndrewOliverHome Thanks...yeah I've looked at all the burners you mentioned and agree on all points. I didn't realise that brass was chosen for its specific properties though. That'll give me some consolation when the pack starts feeling heavy :) Thanks for the informative reply...cheers 👍

Nice review, thanks for showing us that new piece of equipment! Besides the problems with the sharp edges on the stand, I'm curious to know what's the smallest size container you could use with it? The stand's support legs look fairly far apart. For instance could a Stanley Adventure Camp Cookset pot be used, or would the legs be too far apart to support it? Could you use a standard 500 ml cup? The flame pattern might solve the problem with using the Stanley with the Trangia, which is that a lot of the flames go up around the sides of the pot instead of staying underneath it. With the extra price and shipping charges, I think I'll have to stick with my Trangia for now, but it's definitely something I'll keep in the back of my mind.

Funny how a few grams could make it a possible deal breaker. Even if going superlight there are so many other factors to deal with so it won´t matter in the end. We are not even talking 100 grams or so. It is often said that the only aircraft you can replace a DC-3 with, is another DC-3. So far I feel this is the case with the Tangia burner.

Although I tend to favour the MSR white gas stoves fo rmost applications, I do use my Trangia for light solo hikes or flying my gear in a plane. I'm glad you mentioned the simmering ring, as this is an important accessory on my Trangia. I believe that shielding is very important for fuel efficiency, and I now use a folding wood burning mini stove as a stand/enclosure for my Trangia. The Trangia fits right into the interior hole. Would love for you to compare the simmering of the two. Cheers, Brent

I kind of like the stand. If the stand had rounded edges it would be less apt to cause damage. Having said that I always carry everything inside a pot anyway. I have a Docooler two section Solo stove knockoff so it’s a moot point. As far as efficiency I have the Solo burner that you have shown to be marginally less efficient than the Trangia. I may try to make a copper tube insert to simulate the spiral action of the Goshawk, maybe with three legs just to see if it improves boil time. It may decrease total burn time though. I usually cap the flame after boil anyway so that might not be a problem. The other issue might be fuel consumption. It’s worth a try.

In many ways, the specific Trangia burner is the least important aspect of the design. There are many almost direct copies and a few with supposed improvements. They all convert fuel into heat, and the amount of energy in the fuel is the same whichever burner you use. Some burn it a bit more efficiently, som a bit less. The two important things with the genuine Trangia are known quality (brass burner, with a wick), and the completely integrated system with the stable base and the windshield that stores away with two pots, a handle, a kettle and a frying pan/lid. Maybe this particular burner is quicker - for those times when you need to relax on your day off as quickly as possible - but without the fully integrated system, it is only half the product. The Trangia set up is ideal for car, motorbike or boat camping, less so for hiking. However, the Trangia Mini caters for the lighter traveller.

So just a comment on your methodology. It appears that the stand is low for the optimum height for a Trangia. Which means you're comparing optimum, vs sub optimum. Also, the only reason I decided to go with alcohol stoves for real and not just play around with them was how the Trangia just gets angry when it's windy, where the other ones I used blow out. So how is this one in the wind?

I'm not sure which kind of flame is better, the central concentrated one or the one that spreads out. I would rather choose some spreading out of the flame because if you use it with a frying pan, the heat will distribute on a larger area of the pan and food will cook better. A central concentrated flame works better under a small area such as the base of a small mug.

the copper tubes are held together with what looks like JB Weld and that will not stand up to the heat over the long haul, small gage stainless steel wire would be a better option but will add some weight. no way to know it they used a wick in those copper tubes either but when yours comes apart you can tell us and if not drag a cotton string through each tube to help draw more fuel up to the burner hole.

I know this video is two years old but I wanted to mention that I bought a steampunk recently and it makes a great flame but it also leaks like crazy (at least the one they sent me does). So you can use it as a nice burner but I definitely cannot store or leave any fuel in it. Anybody else have this problem ?

You should try the Ikea Hobo Stove (super cheap/light wood burning stove)

My eyes rolled when you pulled out that pot stand. Crikey, it's like a throwing star for camp equipment. Are ya sure it's not an ice chopper? (-: yeah, my Trangia got back ordered. I'll have to try and play with that flame/burner distance from da pot. Flames wrapping up the side bugs me, same as soot. I've seen the Steampunk's design for the adj before. Is this new for them and they have one same as the Trangia? I've never seen inside a SP before.

Also I was wondering how each work at 5° off level. Perhaps nothing, and if so not 'til near end of fuel; and/or, I hear one isn't supposed to let a Trangia run to zero flame.

I like it for the cool factor, but IMHO you just can't beat the battle tested Trangia burner.

In the interest of being relevant to what the rest of us actually do in future vlogs? Could you please just test ALL alcohol stoves in a Firebox Ultralight Titanium Nano G2 Stove? You DO already have one after all. 😉Nobody's using either of the two shoddy stands the Goshawk comes with as they have another 'Country Fair' stand option that sux equally but we are VERY interested in a better burner as a cooking-system component, so why not test them on the stove we all actually pack and carry? The Firebox. It is the best stove by a huge margin in every way. Great video, btw. *Liked& Subscribed

it might have consideration as a 1st time purchase but, we all only need one alcohol stove and I'm guessing, most probably, most of us already have one - so who needs a 2nd one just to save a few seconds or a few grams ?

Just like most MD's, wanna promotet heir MD-ness and then do stupid stuff. For instance, It's probably Gos(z)hawk, the bird, not Go Shawk, RME. Just look at the logo. What's more tragic is you wanna tout Paleo and some connection with the earth thru hiking, which I love both, and you then failed to identify the wildlife connection. Also, the price for this new contender is way out of line. Could buy 3 Trangias and have them in various bags or vehicles. I'm not usually so negative, but you stepped into my arena. So, What fuel were you using? All those minor details aside, thank you for testing all these stoves, well done. This video was well shot, narrated, and edited. The experiment was expertly conducted.

It looks pretty cool but not worth the extra money IMO, the stand is horrible. I’ll stick with my Trangia. Thanks for the review.
