This Toyota Supra that has been in the background of many videos finally got the green light from the owner for a full overhaul to get it back on the road for his son.
It is a beautiful car but the story behind it is even more beautiful. When a father will go to this lengths to share the joy that he had with this car with his son who's going to be driving soon.
This car of course needs a lot of work, but it does have a lot of sentimental value to the owner which I fully understand. In this video which is the first of a few non consecutive videos, we take a look at the car to figure out what it needs and what issues are we having with this particular project.

I owned an 87 Turbo with white pearl paint and the targa top for about 9 years. I had to part with it because I didn't have enough room at my old house for all of the cars we had. I don't miss the issues with the 7M-GTE engine, but it was a great car to drive, especially for a cross-country cruise. I could drive over 12 hours in a day in this car and not feel tired. I hope this car gets restored to its old glory.

I owned the same exact car. Same everything. We live in the Northeast so the car was garage all winter. Nice weather rolls around and I wanted to take it out. Problem the car would not start. I open the hood and found mice or chipmunks took up residents in the turbo. Luckly I was friends with one of the owners of the Toyota dealership. They covered it under warranty even though it wasn't supposed to be warranty. Following winters I made sure the engine was well sealed. Owned the car for 5 years. Never had a problem. Loved the dam car.

I used to own an 88 turbo. Had the same black and crome wheels and everything. I did a full rebuild on the 7MGTE and did a fresh stage 3 clutch. Right after I put in the clutch, it got stolen out of my driveway. You are absolutely right. They used a screw driver to steal it. I found it stripped and abandoned on the end of a dirt road. Totally heart breaking. I put the stock wheels back on it and pieced it back together. I never got over the theft. I felt violated. I sold it not long after that. Years later, I find myself missing that car everyday

I used to own a 1975 Celica GT, got it new, traded in a Honda accord with “sonic boom” at 55mph and all four flat tires every a.m. in the ND winters . I was passing thru Devils Lake and saw the Celica at the Toyota dealer so I left the Honda and drove home with the Celica. The Supra then was an extended chassis Celica but couldn’t afford it then. It was a fun reliable car and I enjoyed it a lot. Your featured Supra brings back memories of our life at Belcourt, ND.😊

So this is almost exactly the same Supra I bought in summer 21'. Same year and milage. Mine is an auto, but it's just immaculate. Doesn't remotely look like this one at all inside and out. Makes me realize now what I actually have and inspires me to keep it that way! I bought it with the Headgasket issue fixed and and the valves replaced. It got that same powersteering leak a few months after and it and the A/C all fluids, timing belt, master cylinder have been addressed. I was never a car guy before this car, but I've replaced the wheels/tires/rotors/suspension/completely converted ALL the lights to custom LED/ fixed the seized calipers and painted them/swaybars/intake/fiberglass window louvers/decals etc etc. Never imagined I would love a car THIS much. She has been a complete dream and the attention it gets on the road/gas stations/car shows is something very new to me. The car handled like a boat when I bought it with MASSIVE body roll. With the huge whiteline front swaybar and rear strut brace along with lowering it on Fortune 500 coilovers, it's the best handling car I've ever driven. IMO there is not a better looking car inside and out on the road. These are worth enthusiasts time if you can find the right one and I'm SO glad this was your second car, Car Care Nut :)

When I was 16, My first car was a black 1986.5 Supra with the 7MGE. That I had bought for $500. Miss that car and it taught me how to drive manual transmission. Great car only thing was the previous owner rigged a home light switch hanging to bypass the security system, so the driver was able to start the car without stepping on the clutch. It was super ghetto 😂. Great video Amd!

That's insane. I cannot fathom this as a first car since it's the LEAST casual car I've ever driven and it's very large. Took me months to get fully used to it and even STILL after two years getting into the drivers seat after driving other cars for a few weeks is a stark contrast. My 88' NA Auto was $8,000 so I'm a bit jealous lol.

I could give a million other examples, acid on supra is far from cold, in fact it's piping hot compared to other shit I've seen (or heard rather) ps I'm a legit chap, strictly straight business only.

Ah, the ole head-gasket, remember them well! My first 1986 Supra I bought with a blown head gasket and I replaced it and drove the car for a couple of years, before selling it to one of my sons. Then we bought an 1989, and the guy we bought it from did a bunch of work to it, but he broke off several of the bolts on the backside of the head, which you can not get to without removing the head, and I made the mistake of replacing the engine, instead of just working on the head. It sat for awhile and after fixing it again, the head gasket blew again! Sold it a year or so later since my son's car needed fixing and I just didn't have the cash to fix the Supra again. Always loved the Supras! I did prefer the 1989s and later! Thanks for sharing!

Mine is blue but has the identical interior color as this. The last time I replaced the head gasket, while I had the intake off I took the time to replace the old vacuum lines that leaked thru the rubber with new silicone lines. They are hidden under the intake and would be a nightmare to replace any other time.

Nice car to spend some time on. Glad to see that they plan to keep it on the road. I love the whisper smooth in line 6. Much the same layout as the Datsun Z cars. Well worth it I think. The cockpit interior instrument cluster is very similar to the style Pontiac used on their Grand Prix‘s from the late 60s through the 70s. I wonder if Toyota got that idea from them. Also, in the 1980s and on into the early 1990s the American Auto industry was in its infancy with starting to put aluminum heads on cast-iron blocks. Remember the disastrous “North Star” from GM? Early attempts didn’t work well with the different expansion rates between aluminum and cast-iron. Head gasket technology as well as understanding proper clamping methods has come a long way since then to make these now common combinations work better together. The older cars really are sensitive to regular coolant changes to prevent electrolysis between dissimilar metals causing leaks. It goes a long way to use high-quality antifreeze while monitoring it’s condition regularly.

I am looking forward for this series! I used to have a 1989 Supra non-turbo. Black, with Mk IV Supra wheels. Whomever owned it before me, had one of those coffee can mufflers on it, so it was super loud. That's the only thing I didn't like about the car. I bought mine, halfway torn apart in 2006. I had a shop get it back together, with a new clutch and new suspension. It ran so good, but the brakes went out on it, and the clutch wore out on me. I sold it for way less than it was worth in 2011. I drove it on vacation from Washington to Montana, and it was an amazing drive... except for going through Spokane, where they had such terrible ruts in the road, I could barely keep the car straight because of the wide wheels. Never had any other issues with it besides the Targa top leaking a bit.

I even love the newer ones where they changed the body style from the one in this video to the rounded body kit and big shopping cart wing on the rear deck lid. The new ones made by BMW don’t even look that great, but definitely don’t have the reliability of Toyota that I’ve seen. @@jameseverly8501 *_Wow. Congratulations. My ex-girlfriend drove one of these back in the day. I'm fairly certain hers was a 1986. Dark blue/blue interior. I remember that it drove like a dream & was VERY fast. Curious, how many miles on yours?_*

Great video as always, great story as well. Like to see an iconic Toyota be given a second life. Patiently waiting for you to have an 80 Series LC to drop in for service and video content.

Awesome what you're helping the owner do for his son! Always loved these cars. By the way, I'm pretty sure that road you turned on is 159th just after Bell. I grew up right down the road near 108th and 159th! So cool to see that! Your channel just got recommended to me. Love the content, cool seeing my hometown again too!

Love these old cars, they just have so much character. We just bought an old Honda odyessy 2.4 litre for a family wagon. Had a ball fixing up all the little bits and pieces, runs perfectly now.. So satisfying 😌 😍

Wow. What a project you have. Should be great! With those headlights though when it snowed or freezing rain, good luck raising them 😂 You said it perfect, something about those cars that makes you appreciate it more. Looking forward to this. Great job as always.

Thank you for this video AMD. My supervisor let me take his 1988 non turbo for a very quick and short drive 33 years ago. What a beautiful car that was. Thank you, Mr. Lebel for the experience.

I definitely enjoyed learning how to work on my first supra, an 88 turbo that got junked due to water flood damage. so the engine and transmission were swapped into an 89 Cressida. Now that was a fun car, a Turbo Cressida, perfect leather interior inside, comfortable, Maroon exterior... It looked like a grandmas car and blew people away every time you floored it. As you can see from the profile picture, times have changed though. Good luck with the car, hopefully they choose to do more than the bare essentials that will keep it on the road.

I had a midnight blue 86.5 first run of the model same interior and the head went twice. I got the chills watching you open the door. Both times the water pump failed. I ended up getting a new mass airflow. Before my car was totaled 😢I knew where all the vacuum hoses went lol and trust one in the wrong position will make it run like crap. I enjoyed having that car with The repair manual 😅I’m actually in the process of looking for another after 23 years. no matter what shape as long that it’s not covered in rust😂. With all the issues, it’s easy to work on and love. Great video
