That "cowbell-ish" sound you hear is something called "Claves". Basically 2 wooden (high quality tone-wood) sticks that you whack together. Lead singer is Paul Rogers... awesome - cheers
@miou-miou-
@miou-miou- 2 года назад
not that all claves are made out of mahogany but.. there is NO tone-wood.. mahogany, hardwood, is found in/on most instruments. sorry but it was talked about soooo much when building guitars and such and there is just no truth to it. save your money and just grab to jenga pieces and wack them against each other and you will have pretty much that same sound.
@wls64

@leehanson1416
@leehanson1416 2 года назад
@@miou-miou- Sorry. You might be right that too much is contributed to "tone wood". But I have heard Paul Smith (of PRS) tap a Brazilian rosewood neck blank, and it has a pitch that it resonates at. As far as Claves go, even you could tell the difference between good claves and banging jenga pieces together.

I was so thrilled when you reacted to Bad Company's "Feel Like Makin Love." The singer (Paul Rodgers) and drummer (Simon Kirke) from Free later formed Bad Company. But Free's hallmark was guitarist Paul Kossoff's sound. No one before or since had a tone like his. RIP Paul. Finally, bassist & pianist Andy Fraser was no slouch either. This song has that awesome bass hook in the middle. Of course, the appeal of this song is its simplicity. I've heard different mixes/arrangements of this song on box sets & re-issues of their albums, and they all suffer from too much production & polish. This (classic) version sounds like you're right in the room with the guys. -JR in Miami

The singer Paul Rodgers was only 19 when he recorded this. He then became one of the best soulful rock vocalists in history. Imo Free were the best band ever. They wrote this song when they were teenagers. Paul Kossoff is my favourite guitarist ever. He was so economical with his playing but every note and chord was so well placed. Simon Kirke was a great drummer, Andy Fraser an incredible bassist and songwriter and Paul Rodgers vocals were brilliant. Try out Wild Indian Woman and I’m a Mover. In fact you could do worse than to react to all the tracks on their live album, unimaginatively named ‘Free Live’

Paul Rodgers said that when they wrote this song what he was wanting was a song that they can end their concerts with. They were currently ending their concerts with a blues cover tune, but they wanted their own, so he wrote the chorus right then by singing it to the band and they went and finished the rest of it. This is the classic rock song from that era and Paul Rodgers is the icon of hard rock singers from that time.

Paul Kossoff (guitar) was the son of actor David Kossoff, so came from a relatively privileged background. He was in a Northern England bar with a live band and asked the singer and drummer (Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke, working class Northerners) to form a band with him. They needed a bass guitarist and Andy Fraser, despite the Scottish sounding name, was a mixed-race Londoner from a poor family who had done a stint with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers despite being only 15, was recommended to them. He also played piano and on stage could play bass with organ pedals at the same time. Despite their very different backgrounds, they hit it off as a band, and though they all did a bit of writing, this song and most of their tracks were written by Andy Fraser and Paul Rogers, despite the fact that the two of them didn't really get on. Paul Kossoff's hard drug addiction caused a lot of tension in the band, and they were young and immature at the time. Before breaking up, there was another line-up with replacements for Fraser and Kossoff, before Free came to an end and Paul Rodgers formed Bad Company.

I love this. I was about 9-10 years old when this was played on the radio a lot. Still sounds great! Lead singer is the second guy from the left in the photo named Paul Rodgers and also sang lead in other bands including Bad Company. They're from the UK.

When I think of great rock classics this is near the top. This gem came out in 1970 and hit number 4 on the charts.Paul Rodgers is Phenomenal. A lesser known song by Free but none the less a great song was MY BROTHER JAKE. After Free Paul Rodgers and his drummer started the band Bad Company with hits like FEEL LIKE MAKIN' LOVE and ROCK 'N' ROLL FANTASY.

I'm 64 I graduated High School in 75 I grew up to this music. [Free - All Right Now] (1970) was one of my favorites, but I never knew the names of the singers or what happened to the band. As Kid Rock so aptly says "We didn't have no Internet" We essentially has transistor radios, car radios and a weekly dose of Casey Kasem American Top 40. It wasn't until I read through the comments on this review that I found out members of Free had morphed into Bad Company and that makes perfect sense. The music is very similar (obviously). I was watching a YT vid of Andy Kim discussing the marketing of the Archies (Ron Dante) song Sugar Sugar and he reminded us what "social media" was like back in the 60s and 70s it was radio listeners picking up the telephone and calling the radio stations to let the DJs know what they thought of the music they were playing. Much different than the social media of the Information Age. You guys are great! Thank you for your reviews, you are turning over and examining many of the stepping stones of modern music and from a societal and historical perspective, believe it or not you are providing a valuable service to our musical heritage. Keep up the great work! :)

I could tell that you knew this song Amber. I have always liked it. The lead singer, (second from the left) British/Canadian Paul Rodgers, joined "Queen" for a few years after Freddie Mercury passed away. 🎶❤🎸
