It's not irrational though. There are serious concerns with nuclear. Look at France right now. Their new reactor has been delayed for over 10 years now and now cost 12,7 billion euro instead of the 3,3 billion euro that was expected. 10 out of their 56 reactors are down due to corrosion and other problems (their new ones) and their old ones are nearing end of life. If this keeps going, France will soon have a massive energy crisis as their old reactors are decomissioned and their new ones don't work. Renewable energy is what to invest in, and Germany has been doing a good job at that. They've gone from 65-70% fossil fuels down to about 40% in the last 30 years. Mostly replaced by wind, solar, and biomass. Meanwhile, in that same period, France has been generating almost all of its energy from nuclear and hydropower. So only seeing a snapshot of last year doesn't say much, except that Germany still uses a lot more fossil fuels than France. If you would take a look at CO2 emissions over the last 30 years, however, you see that Germany went from just over 1 billion tons of CO2 in 1990, down to 775 million tons in 2016. That's about a quarter less. So while they still have work to do, they're on the right track.

@@jehandesains8674 Sure, nuclear power will never be 100% safe and some terrible accidents happened in the past. But that level of fear many people have is out of proportion. Even the very highest estimates for Chernobyl "only" range from 9.000-16.000 deaths (if you count in all the long term cancer deaths). That is ridiculously low if you consider how much went wrong. In Fukushima, more people died from stress induced heart attacks during the evacuation, than from the accident itself. Dependent on the statistic you pick, nuclear energy causes even less deaths per generated terawatt-hour than the renewables. And while everyone is scared of nuclear energy, air pollution from burning coal kills MILLIONS EACH YEAR! And we have no idea for many cases of lung cancer or asthma air pollution is responsible. A considerable amount of people here in Germany have bumper stickers on their car to show their aversion for nuclear energy (it says: "Atomkraft? Nein, danke!" look it up). It's probably the most common bumper sticker you'll see here. But no one talks about casualties linked to the usage of fossile fuels. What really bums me out is that Germany went back to coal in order to abolish nuclear energy. If we would have went to renewables, this would have been a different discussion. But we didn't. We burned more coal to get rid of nuclear energy as soon as possible. Germany's transition to renewable energy has been utterly pathetic so far. When we are talking about energy, we tend to focus on electricity. But we also need energy to heat our homes and for transportation. If we electrify both, our electricity consumption will be nearly tripled. Even worse: Expanding the production of renewable energy will become increasingly hard and expensive, because all the most suitable spots are already been taken use of (like windiest areas and areas with the most sun hours). It is the law of deminishing returns, a very basic economic law.
