I always liked the Dark World. The sad parts felt truly emotionally resonant and the brotherly parts between Thor and Loki were great and I genuinely felt invested in Jane and Thor being able to be together. It felt like Taika Wahtiti really doesn't care at all about the previous movies or the things they set up. I also hated the Ragnarok improv comedy. Every single character has that wink-at-the-camera "Oh that's like a stupid sci-fi comicbook thing, right? That's cute." even Hela, so it's jarring that they juxtapose it with the concept of Ragnarok and a ton of Thor's closest loved ones dying. He's immortal, the people he loves best are dead forever, c'mon, that should be tragic. But not even losing Asgard was given gravity they have to play the whole, "Asgard is a people not a place" BS, how lovely, well good to know if the Earth gets blown up it won't matter that the place had value to it as well.

Ignoring the bait and switch of this video, i have to say that Dark World really isn't that bad. I do actually like the color grading a bit, and how it tried to expand on some aspects of the lore like Asgard. Regardless, i still think that Thor 1 is the best Thor movie, followed by Ragnarok. DW is in the middle and L&T is the worst one.
@ang1759
@ang1759 Год назад
DW is not that bad for sure. It’s not by any means a perfect film, hell not even amazing but it’s better than anything Phase 4 has produced aside from NWH but that has a lot of nostalgia for me that causes my views on it to be way less critical. As for me, I’d say the best Thor film is probably Infinity War. Yeah I know it’s an Avengers movie but it’s the one movie that gets Thor perfectly. It took the best from Thor 1 and 2 and put it with the comedy of Ragnarok just enough to make Thor funny and so tragic at the same time.

As someone who actually really liked Dark World, it's Ragnarok > Love and Thunder > Dark World > Thor for me. That said, if I rewatched Dark World, I could see myself potentially moving Dark World up above Love and Thunder, but I really loved Ragnarok despite agreeing that it would have been nice if it had let some of the emotional moments sit a bit more than they did. EDIT: Yeah, Scott, you completely misread that play scene. It isn't pretending the previous movie didn't happen at all. I personally didn't even read it as making fun of the previous Thor movie. It's just reestablishing for the audience that Loki is believed to be dead right before it's revealed that he's actually been masquearing as Odin.

The tropes tended to catch up to them in the second film, which brought it down just as Wanda's asinine heel turn brought down MoM. Was not expecting this video to go where it went, but I really do appreciate this video on so many levels. Back to earlier parts: the part of Ragnarok I hated the most was how flippantly it eliminated the Warriors Three (and didn't even include Sif), particularly as their role already seemed unfortunately diminished in Dark World (particularly sad to me because I was really happy to see Zachary Levi get to be Fandral).
@emmijadeshow
@emmijadeshow Год назад
If this was the ONLY sin Ragnarok committed, and it was not, it would have been enough for me to write the movie off entirely. It just really gives the vibe that the filmmakers had extreme distaste for the source material.
@Tuaron
@Tuaron Год назад
@@emmijadeshow I am curious to know what you consider the other main sins Ragnarok committed. Not to argue a point, but out of curiosity (though I may disagree, I do like to try to understand why people dislike some things). If it's the tone, I can understand though disagree (I think Ragnarok found a good balance for the humour, Love & Thunder went too far over), if it's the way the Planet Hulk story was treated, I also understand though it doesn't matter to me as much (wasn't so big on that story, anyway), though I suppose that'd align with that "distaste for the source material" thing.
@emmijadeshow
@emmijadeshow Год назад
@@Tuaron Mmm, there are several reasons, although I came to terms a long time ago that Ragnarok is generally endearing to most people, while it was not to me, so it won't hurt my feelings if you disagree haha. There are a lot of things I don't like about the movie, from the change in tone, to costume choices (I absolutely loathe the short hair and Roman-inspired armor, but that's just a me thing) , the callous and offhand nature of the deaths of the Warriors Three and the way Thor was never even given a moment to acknowledge the deaths of his lifelong companions, the jarring nature of the "oh god please laugh laugh it's a funny movie right guys?" desperation of the jokes juxtaposed with the absolute horror of *genocide*, the absence of Sif, who is my favorite Thor character in the movies and the comics, I could go on. But there are two things about it that make it the worst of the Thor movies to me. The main thing is not just a tone change, but an entire genre change. I am a big fantasy fan, and the Thor pocket of the Marvelverse has always been a favorite of mine because while the MCU has framed it as more science fantasy, it's still got a lot of the tropes of the genre that I like. Ragnarok came in, threw up a middle finger at everything that had been established, destroyed Asgard without a thought, and made Thor into a Guardians of the Galaxy series in all but name and main character. If I wanted Guardians of the Galaxy, I would watch Guardians of the Galaxy. I do not want 80s-inspired sci fi in my Thor movies, I watch them for fantasy-inspired superhero movies. That's one of the reasons TDW remains one of my favorites despite it's flaws. Seeing inside Asgard was a dream. The second thing is that Ragnarok was where you could really tell they stopped knowing or caring what to do with the character. I am so, so tired of going to the movies and watching one of my favorite characters in fiction lose over, and over, and over again. First he lost Asgard, but he got to keep his brother. Okay, cool. Next movie kills his brother minutes later. Then the absolute atrocity of how he was treated in Endgame happened. Then Love and Thunder came along and he lost Jane (a character I do not even think he has a healthy relationship with, but ffs, I wish she hadn't died, not only for him but because Marvel can't just let women live). TL;DR - For a character with such a generally happy disposition his movies are so sad and I'm tired, lol.

@@IkeOkerekeNews I think the Guardians of the Galaxy films balance the comedy and the dramatic scenes just perfectly. Do those movie start pulling out jokes immidately when important characters die in them? No. No, they don't. They let the scenes play out and don't treat the character's dying as a joke. They don't treat their characters going through a sad traumatic event and just immediately mock it afterwards. Asgard gets destroyed in Ragnorak. Thor loses his home, his sister, his culture, and many of his people. Does the movie let that sink in or let any of the characters reflect on that? No! The movie just immediately makes a joke about the situation and then the movie just ends like that. I was genuinely enjoying the movie until that bit came up and it soured my mood entirely.

Thoroughly enjoyed this video and can't believe you didn't make more "my tea" sounds like "mighty" jokes.. but I'll let it slide 'cause the rest of the video was so great!

I love this video so much. I agree with almost 100% of what you say here. (Although I admit I am slightly more biased towards TDW as a whole, it's one of my favorites.) The only thing I have to say is that I think that although they did highlight Sif's feelings for Thor in TDW, I feel like it's not necessarily bad? I have always liked that she very clearly loved him (Jaime Alexander did that on purpose even in the first movie) but that didn't make her weak. The way these movies handle Sif has always been weird, but as much as there might have been a mild amount of friction and hurt, I feel like the movie didn't condescend to her over it, or play it like she was silly or crazy for it, which I appreciated. Although, re: Jane: even before the movie started, Jane was being done wrong. It heavily implies she just sat around crying for two years over him? After waiting around to see him, getting yeeted around by SHIELD, then seeing him in New York but not hearing from him at all - the implication that she just sat around and cried for two years over a guy she hung out with for four days has always rubbed me the wrong way.

Another brilliant video!!! I’ll always love listening to your thoughts on different films and media, and real world issues!! I enjoy many aspects of Thor Dark World, but like you said there are also parts that aren’t as great - the same can be said for many films and it annoys me when the norm is either hating or loving something rather than having a detailed discussion about it! Basically I’m just really glad you made this video and I think it’s really good!!!

Man, like, i really enjoy your content. I was not a fan of The Dark World, like, at all, and I LOVED Ragnarok. Not gonna lie, I was very unsure about the premise of this video, because that's a spicy take and I'm spicy as milk. But, I enjoy your content enough that I was 100% willing to watch it anyway, so I did, and I'm very glad I did. You gave me more of an appreciation for The Dark World. And that was good enough, but THEN you got real, and just reaffirmed why I appreciate your stuff beyond just the knowledge about nerd topics. Thanks for doing what you do. Fantastic video, 10/10, I have a new least favorite MCU movie(The Winter Soldier), as you've increased my appreciation for The Dark World.

I really loved large chunks of TDW, the set design and visuals can't be understated. But it's flaws are notable. Ragnarok for me was an over correction and swung the pendulum too far the other way and sounds like L&T kept going. Though Ragnarok had some really great emotional beats. I wish we could have gotten the comic Malekith instead of the tone and design they went with. Eccelson was such a wasted casting. I appreciate the pre Avengers movies because they feel a lot more unique and have their own identity before the MCU house style got really codified.

Dark World is often considered one of the worst Marvel's film but Marvel is kind of like Pixar, in that at their worst they're ok. I do agree that the quite scene with Loki is a good moment as well as the whole funeral scene, and the visual joke of Thor putting his hammer on the rack. The color palate thing I never noticed and it's an interesting touch. I also never noticed how often we do the trope of women being vessals for some other entity (perhaps to reference them carrying life and mother earth and stuff). It also kind of reminds me of how often we have female characters with psychic powers and they go through some sort of Dark Phoenix story arc.

I interpret the himbo depiction of Thor as him consciously playing into that. It is most apparent in conflict moments and having your opponents underestimate you, or think you don't NEED to take the situation seriously, are valid tactical decisions. There are still moments where his mind shines through, the elevator scene is a good example, cuz in one sentence he utterly demolishes Loki's badboy act. Also, he is several millenia old, I think you either get a great sense of humour or go full Bill Reilly.

"Worst MCU movie" isn't really a damning distinction. I never read the play in Ragnarok as throwing shade at Dark World, only that it spoke to how egomaniacal Loki is. The scene also served as a clever way to fill in the audience on some back story.

I genuinely like Dark World. I’m a sucker for the vibe of Asgard, and I liked the Thor and Loki dynamics. And I think it has two of my most quoted lines out of all the Thor films (“how’s space?” and “have you tried pressing them gently?” - although “I’m not doing get help” is up there) While I do also enjoy Ragnarok, it’s never one that I just feel like popping on. Most of it is over the top comedy, interspersed with things like Thors closest friends being killed like fodder, and being in the mood for both things isn’t common for me.

Feels like having a fun convo with a friend and hearing what he values in characters rather than bashing on movies. When he started talking about reproductive rights and trans rights and shit like that, I was surprised and not in a good way. Bro you might have people in your audience who probably do consider themselves conservatives and anti-abortion(which isn’t a bad thing). Not a good idea to bash them and say that they’re wrong just so you can vent about how awful conservatives are. Especially in a video that’s talking about friggin Thor of all things

He’s been candid about his political opinions for a very very long time, this isn’t anything new and it isn’t going anywhere. My comment was about how whether or not scott doesn’t like ragnarok like I do, I don’t mind hearing his takes about it because he makes light of the fact that opinions on subjective art don’t cancel each other out and that there’s nuance and friendly disagreement to be had.
