Should never use Teflon tape on any threaded fitting on an engine. The stuff can get into the oil pump and galleries and ruin your day. Same for too much rtv. Ask me how I know? Worked for MB 45yrs.

Thanks. Strange that the light was coming on. Was the oil low? Does it still do it now you've changed it?
@jongsanim
@jongsanim 9 лет назад
MuddySump I'm assuming it was low. I drained around 3L (did not change filter) and refilled closer to 3,5ish. The light has not come in since, but I haven't had the same warm circumstances yet ;)
@jongsanim
@jongsanim 9 лет назад
MuddySump Had it in for the 20.000km service where they filled it with 10w40, and now it happens again. At idle when hot (city-driving) the oil-lamp flickers, but when I rev it to 2000 the lamp shuts off again. I'm suspecting it might be too thing, for some reason, thus not maintaining enough oil-pressure, but I haven o idea why it would be too thin seeing Triumph reccomends 10w/40 (and 10w/50). Before the service I filled it with 10w50 and did not have the problem. Also read it might be water on the oil-pressure switch being wet (water)? Meh, think I'l ljust refill with 10w/50 again and see how it goes.
@MuddySump
@MuddySump 9 лет назад
Sounds like the oil pressure relief valve faulty. Had the same symptoms happen on 2 triumph americas, oil light flicker while idling then fine when riding. It was an engine split on those to change them, can get it on the tiger with the exhaust and sump off. Is it not under warranty anymore?

4:10 every time over the years when I look at stuff like this or even the Haynes manual (which actually says do everything while on the sidestand!) How do I check the level in the sightglass because it's NOT on centre stand You put 3.5 lts into this bike on the centre stand and the sightglass will be full of oil Do I have to balance bike and check oil level?
@dasf2008
@dasf2008 8 лет назад
You mention that the engine is warm. Do you suggest to warm up the engine before changing the oil? If so, don't you think you may have issues with removing the engine plug as this is made of a different metal compared to the engine block and they should expand differently upon heat?
@MuddySump
@MuddySump 8 лет назад
+Demetrio FILHO yes, change the oil when it's warm. Flows better that way and anything in there will come out if it's freshly circulated. The different metals don't get that hot to make them not separate.

@@MuddySump I'm pretty sure it's because the oil then drains better towards the left side where the bolt is. I just did an oil change an mine took about 3.8L, which seems to be more than yours did here.

What engine oil is that you're using in the video? Personally I think all engine oils are the same as long as they meet spec...but I like the one that you used in the video because it has a nice pouring mechanism without needing for funnels.

Just love all your videos and thank you for making them. Just did mine and the oil filter was fine. I used a new Triumph aluminium crush washer on the sump and torqued to 25nm - checked with 2 different torque wrenches but I am still getting a slight leak (wet finger after a day of rest). Is it alright to go tighter - maybe the crush washer needs a bit extra when first used or do you think there is another issue. Is it critical which way up the crush washer goes ? The bolt fitted fine and easily and not cross threaded -. bike is a Gen 2 - XRX 2015 - 13600 miles, last removed by Destination Triumph at 12k service last year - any advise would be appreciated.
@MuddySump
@MuddySump 2 года назад
It’s not a crush washer the standard one, just a normal aluminium washer about 3mm thick. Could try giving it a bit more of a tighten but it shouldn’t be leaking. Is it not running down from somewhere else and just ending there?

Is the moisture bad ? My 2012 tiger has moisture in the sight glass . I am waiting for the oil filter to do a change . could it just be that its over its oil change ? I just got the bike a few weeks ago and haven't ridden more than 100 miles maybe 70 ish miles and have no idea when it was done last . I know that it wasn't smart because the oil was pretty dark in the sight glass but it has been my dream for 25 years to have a bike and I couldn't fight the urge to get out and start practicing . I am not riding until I change the oil . also I got the heavier oil recommended because it is been over 100 f every day for about a month now and I have heard the shifting is more smooth with the 15W oil ?. Thank you again so much for your videos and I hope you and yours are well
@MuddySump
@MuddySump 4 года назад
Some long runs should start burning it off. It’s caused by the bike not been used for long and not getting hot enough. Or some people just start them and let them run a few minutes to charge the battery, better to not run it and just put the battery on charge every now and again. That’s all my bikes get these days 😄 It doesn’t take long for the oil to start looking black, it’s probably fine still

@nickaj242
@nickaj242 7 лет назад
hi Muddy, great video as always. I changed the filter and oil in my Tiger 800 yesterday, however when topping up with new oil, I had no reaction from the sight glass at all. it didn't look like any oil was leaving when drained, and whist adding the new oil, none appeared to be going in. I put approximately 3.5L in (service sheet says that's how much it holds) but I wanted to see if this was a big problem. Bike ran okay this morning to work after a jittery start up. Any ideas? Thanks
@MuddySump
@MuddySump 7 лет назад
+Nick AJ hi nick. Does the sight glass not just need a wipe to get some muck off or something? Should be able to see it quite clear
@nickaj242
@nickaj242 7 лет назад
MuddySump that was my initial thought but I gave it a good clean before I changed the filter/oil and couldn't see anything. the only idea I have is that there wasn't enough oil in there previously to reach the minimum mark, so after draining and refilling it simply doesn't have enough oil to fill the sight glass. but what I don't want to do is overfill. thanks for the quick response
@MuddySump
@MuddySump 7 лет назад
