I have just done a coolant change yesterday with the help of this video. It was super helpful, but I have done the things a little differently. The clamp on the hose you used to drain was hard to remove (it was not worm type like yours) so I have done it through the heat exchanger (as per the manual). Also your bleeding procedure was a lot easier. I had to shake the bike quite a bit before it took the required coolant
@MuddySump
@MuddySump 9 месяцев назад
👍🏻 they changed the clamps to clips on later models and all the newer bikes now. Can be a bit of a pain to get off sometimes. You can get some special pliers for them but I just use some water pump pliers

Hi great videos very easy to follow even for me. Just a couple of questions on the coolant change I have a tiger 800 xrt. I didn't have a bleed plug on the radiator also I ran the bike for 4/5 minutes after the coolant change but the fan never kicked in. The reason I changed it as it overheated on the rolling thunder ride in London. Is there a way of knowing if the fan is buggered? Keep up the good work! Cheers Alan
@MuddySump
@MuddySump 5 лет назад
Hi Alan Can take longer than that for the fan to come on. Has to get to 103 degrees Celsius. You could put 12v straight to the fan and it should spin then.

On my 2012 Tiger 800 XC the bleeder screw is just a plastic screw with a philips head on it. No hex head. It was a pain in the ass to remove so I called the parts guy at the Triumph dealer and he says you don't really need to take that screw off, just press the hoses and you'll be good to go.
@MuddySump
@MuddySump 2 года назад
It’s the same plastic screw in the video. You need to have a good fitting screwdriver or you’ll just turn the slots into a circle

@@MuddySump im an idiot. i was watching on my phone outside when i was working on it. i thought yours was a hex head since you had the socket wrench! thanks again for the video. i did it without taking out the bleeder screw so hopefully it'll all be ok!

Hi MuddySump I'm about to change coolant fluid for the first time on my own on a '15 800 XCx When the fluid is drained does the reservoir fluid also drain into the radiator and from there down the hose? If not, how does one drain the reservoir? I'm going to use Engine Ice, which is glycol, and I don't want to mix the current coolant with the new one. Thanks in advance and I love your videos!
@jackshakes
@jackshakes 6 лет назад
The reservoir will drain with the radiator. I used Engine Ice in my track bike and had to be 100% sure to get ALL the anti-freeze out. I did an additional fill and flush with distilled water between the initial draining and Engine Ice fill.
@bigman-adv
@bigman-adv 6 лет назад
Thanks! The flushing with distilled water was done for track compliance or to avoid a chemical reaction? Regd Engine Ice - Did you see a difference in the engine heat?
@jackshakes
@jackshakes 6 лет назад
For track compliance. You would be fine to skip that step if you want. I *feel* like it runs cooler? I can run all day in quite warm temperatures and I never notice the bike getting warm. I've heard others make similar claims. Again, this is under track conditions though where heat is often an issue we don't run into on the street.
@bigman-adv
@bigman-adv 6 лет назад
Thanks for the info. Much appreciated. I didn't use the Tiger on a track but in warm days it takes 2 minutes of traffic or standing to get the engine heat to go up. I'm hoping the engine ice is a better heat conductor
@bigman-adv
@bigman-adv 6 лет назад
Riding slow single tracks in the woods also heats up the engine very quickly. It really likes speed since then the air is cooling it down properly. I think that Triumph has designed a radiator which is too small and/or it is inefficient. I rode KTM 1190 and 1290 and their engine heat never moves above the center

@leecausey2892
@leecausey2892 4 года назад
MuddySump thanks. I was starting to get worried. I'll crank it up and let it run for 20 mins or so and see if that gets it to kick on. I'm a little worried my thermostat is shot. I was on a trip this weekend and I fell over. In doing so the reservoir cap popped off and I dumpped some coolant. I topped it up with water because I had no other choice. The rest of the weekend it would start flashing that it was overheating and the check engine light would come on. I was freaked out at first then I found if I just turned off the bike and cycled the key it would read normal again but still have a check engine light. Then after a while the light would go off. It seemed really random when it would indicate that it was overheating but would always reset after cycling the key. Strange.

@MuddySump
@MuddySump Год назад
Thanks. Yes, it’s all the same idea. The only difference on the sport is that there’s another bleed screw at the front of the engine on the left side. Little 10mm head with a copper washer. The coolant shoots out when you take the screw out. I usually use a small funnel to direct it to the drain bowl
@mikebrook8500

Is this process roughly the same for the 1200. Do you also have to wait for the coolant fan to come on first before checking the level in the expansion tank? As if you follow the manual it just says at room temperature and level which if it is that then I don't have any coolant in the bike but it doesn't overheat.
@MuddySump
@MuddySump 5 лет назад
There’s a screw at the front of the engine you have to take out to drain the coolant in the explorer too. Have a drain pan ready cause it shoots right out towards the front wheel. It has to run till the fan comes on when you’ve done a coolant change. That must just be to check the coolant normally
@joelstevenson1018

Triumph recommends performing the coolant change about every two years? Coming from owning all Japanese bikes theirs was roughly every year. I am coming up on a year with daily riding(TigerXCX 2017). Muddy sump, is it safe to say I should have the coolant changed? Thanks Cheers!

@MuddySump
@MuddySump 7 лет назад
+Wolfman fan comes on at 103'c never looked at what bar it is on the dash but probably close to coming on. Should run it for 30 seconds, take the cap off, top up radiator then top up expansion bottle. Then let it run till the fan comes on and goes back off. The level shouldn't move in the expansion bottle when it does but it might pull a bit back into the radiator when cooling. Can top up expansion bottle again then
