The fish story hurts as someone who's older sibling did a very similar thing with our three comet goldfish we got from the fair, though it also included a fork and the car keys in their bowl... Luckily they were saved before anything terrible happened and grew to around 2-3ft in length and ate hornets on occasion. They're uh... Horrible pets for little kids, even aside from me thinking children shouldn't be given the responsibility of taking care of another living being under a certain age, those three weren't even the biggest ones on record of that carp species ^^' Also I'm now mortified to learn that this could've happened to them instead, though glad the bowl itself probably actually saved them in our case since I assume that horror story involves them being removed from the water where they'd rapidly heat instead of taking multiple minutes. Poor fish

Yup. Also why it's not a good idea to get a pet "for the kids" and then just leave them to care for it without supervision. Most young children mean well but don't understand how to look after animals or handle them safely, and one or both usually end up getting hurt (or worse). As a kid, I had a pet gerbil who ended up with half a tail because my brother (a toddler at the time) thought that was a good way to pick them up... Not to mention the amount of times an animal gets unfairly punished and labelled as dangerous because they react negatively to something inappropriate the child did (e.g. climbing on them, taking their food, grabbing them unexpectedly).

Not hyper interesting but for one time I can talk about it: I have the rarest form of diabete called diabetes insipidus, I can't regulate the water in my body because I don't create the hormone that keep it at a healthy level. So I take a medication that replicate the effect, and one time I took too much of it. And experienced hyponatremia. And oh my freaking God what a living hell that was. I retained maybe 7liters of water in a few hours and it was a living nightmare. Like the worst headache of all time, the worst nausea ever and 12 hours in my bed without being capable of moving or even call for help. Like being pregnant and having the worst hangover of all time at the same time, and multiplied by 10 000. And then you square it, you put it on steroids and you let Michael Bay film it. Unbelievable. Don't recommend.

Which is another reason to get a UV light in a vivarium if you have a pet snake. It isn't just for vitamins created by the UV, but actually increases their every day quality of life as well.

It's not necessarily playing on the guilt. Jokes and humor can be ways to cope with serious trauma. It's actually pretty common with SA victims. That's why traumatized people often have REALLY fucked up sense of humor. It's also important to be able to bring up and discuss about these things in some way to properly process what's happened, especially with family, even if it's in the form of dark humour.

If the kid has trauma for not being believed or helped, she might blame her mom and make jokes like that as a way to vent or get back at her for not stepping in. Idk my trauma gave me a morbid sense of humor too, so I'd be a hypocrite to judge her for that.
