This is the method I have used for the past 30 years to light all of my Tilley pressure lamps and lanterns. The time scale, fill level and number of pumps is as per a set of instructions included with a brand new X246B MkII I purchased in 1991. This particular model is an X246B MkI dated October 1972.

One of my favorite Tilley models. My son and myself now have a pair of these and we enjoy them often here in the states. They’re great lanterns and we love them as much as the Coleman lanterns.

The X246B is probably the least liked in the Tilley family here in the UK owing mainly to the cheaper production materials and techniques and whilst I agree they are not to the same standard as the earlier models they still do a excellent job. This model is my go-to work horse and has never let me down and most issues found are usually down to poor maintenance and user error. Keep enjoying your Tilleys! Regards Broadlander

Hello Broadlander In an attempt to rekindle my youth and introduce my wife and children to Tilley lamps I brought one from eBay. It looked I’m good condition but as it’s just a bit older than me I thought I had better replace the washer so I got a service kit from Tilley. I watched your video and attempted to service the lamp. I noticed the fine wire thing with the pin prick on the end (which you cleaned with sand paper) was a little bent. And it looked like the pump had been over tightened and the aluminium was a little misshapen. I took it out to where we were camping and it was a flop.... my wife and kids thought it was very funny. It barley lit, then it pulsed for a while and then when I next looked round at it, it had gone out. When I got home I brought (from Tilley) a new pump and a new vaporiser (I’ve now spent more on parts than the lamp itself). I’ve put it all together and it’s still not as I remember. My problems are - pulsing/surging light - black areas on the mantle (new Tilley ones) - not very bright - there is also a flame around the mantle, however as I’m writing this that has died down a lot If you have any ideas what I might be doing wrong or what might be up with my lamp they would be very welcome I remember these being great and having lots of fun and I’d love to pass this on. Thanks for the great videos as hope to hear back soon Graham
@broadlander1398
@broadlander1398 5 лет назад
Hi Graham I’ll do my best to help. Having read your comments I believe there are possibly two or three factors here causing the issues stated. Pulsing usually indicates lack of pressure or pressure loss. Empty paraffin, remove hood and glass, close control cock and tighten pump. Pump 40-50 strokes and submerge in a bucket of water. Any leaks will show small bubbles as the pressurised air escapes. Blackening of the mantle could be contributed to by the following: Worn out burner. Blocked air tubes. Enlarged jet in vaporiser. Lack of pressure. The cleaning wire in the old vaporiser does not really matter if it is bent as long as the pricker is sharp and can be felt through the jet when the control cock is in the closed position. Also the quality of the new vaporisers are dubious and I have had faulty from new on a couple of occasions. Try lighting again perhaps using the old vaporiser and comparing against the current one. It may also be worth preheating twice before lighting. Please let me know how you get on and possibly even post a video. Regards Broadlander

Amazing video, thanks for the tips. Couldn't get my old 1974 lamp purring, used this exact method with the unscrewed pump and shut off valve open during warm up, worked a treat. Never seen one fired up in the flesh before, a thing of beauty, she hasn't been fired up in 46 years! Question, I do get a bit of flicker during the burn, it's a stead white glow, but I think the newly installed genuine mantle may be the problem as although I assembled it correctly, one side of the top has got stuck to the burner. So it doesn't represent an onion or small satsuma shape. Would it be worth changing the mantle again? I guess it could also be clogging in the vaporiser during the flow of paraffin as it sparks sometimes, like once every 10-15 minutes. Maybe normal operation, it was in the workshop, so wind wouldn't have affected the flow. Thanks again!
@broadlander1398
@broadlander1398 3 года назад
Hi James and thanks for the kind words. The occasional flickering should not be a problem and is most likely caused by small parts of carbon deposits flaking off from the inside of the vaporiser. If a large piece causes a partial or full blockage of the jet orifice this can be cleared by turning the control cock off-on quickly a few times. A miss-shaped mantle should not have any bearing on your issue and if it is otherwise working fine, ie: no flames outside of it, I would leave it be. If flames are present outside of the mantle or it develops a hole then change it immediately. A mantle is cheaper than a replacement glass. All the best! Broadlander

@@broadlander1398 Thanks Broadlander. I applied a few more pumps and have a steady flow now, I think I was probably a bit sheepish on the pressure. Also stripped down completely over the weekend, new seals, springs, leather, washers etc, every component cleaned, pricker rod checked, all components of the burner. Now running even better. One issue though, I was watching another of your videos and you mentioned that the X246 and X246B can be prone to 'dishing' on the base. When turning upside down, I would say that the base on mine has a bit of a bulge to it, but nothing that makes it unsteady when sitting flat. Are the bases supposed to be flat as standard, or do they normally have a little dish? As far as I knew it was never used, though could have been once or twice. I did 50 pumps to start with and now do 70-75 tops. Another of your videos with the lighting method mentioned they can take up to 100, and I think you did 89. I waited until there was a strong white glow and it wasn't getting much brighter, which was about 70 pumps. Just wondered if there is a recommended amount if I've got a slightly dishing base potentially? Thanks!

Hi, I have enjoyed your videos - you make it look so simple! I Have 2 Tilley lamps, purchased around 1977, but have not used them for a long time. Today I replaced the seals, (using a kit), as you showed, but it would not burn. The second lamp is missing a pricker stem- any suggestions as to where I might be able to source one/ would I be better off purchasing a new vaporiser as a complete unit? Also, although I have the old type Tin pricker with a short piece of wire on the end to unblock the vaporiser jet/hole, but, you guessed it, it is too big to do the job. Is there one available anywhere? I should say that I live in Tasmania , Australia, so if parts are needed it would be best to source from the U.K, , as they are virtually impossible to buy over here. Ignore the letters as the hold no relevance and to be honest no one is really 100% sure of their meaning. Jonathon Solway. Apologies for the delay in replying but health issues in the family have had to take priority. Glad to say situations are improving. On the subject of the X246B MKI/MKII hybrid with the tight hood. In all honesty the parts should be fully interchangeable without any issues so I can only guess the cage may be slightly out of shape and this can be checked easily by measuring several locations across the top and applying pressure to reform it. The other possible problem is the handle or bail lugs have been bent inwards and again these can be eased out. Hope this helps and please let me know how you progress. Regards Broadlander

Ben Norton Hi and many thanks. This is an easy question to answer: Change the mantle if it becomes damaged in any way. A hole in the mantle which is left unchanged can become costly when a hot spot occurs causing the glass to break. A well fitting mantle will last for years provided no insect damages it or it doesn't fracture during transportation. Hope this helps. Regards Broadlander

should you store the lamp with control knob in open or off position?
@broadlander1398
@broadlander1398 Год назад
Hi @Perinne A very sensible question! I would recommend keeping it open whenever storing a lantern either with or without fuel in it. If left for any long period of time there is potential for the tip of the cleaning needle to become rusted in the jet hole. The vaporiser is steel and the cleaning needle is stainless steel, however they can become irreversibly joined. I always keep one lantern with some fuel in the fount ready for an emergency. In this instance I make sure the pump/filler is loose enough to prevent atmospheric/temperature pressure build up, and also with the control cock in the “ON” position. Hope this helps, Regards, Broadlander

Are the mantles delicate? Do they break if you say banged the lamp camping?
@broadlander1398
@broadlander1398 Год назад
Hi Jeff. Once burned in, the mantles become an delicate structure of ash which will break if touched. A really hard knock could potentially break a mantle but could also break the glass globe too. I have successfully car transported and used Tilleys successfully and the mantles have lasted many trips over several years. The trick is not to touch them when cleaning or servicing your lanterns. @@broadlander1398 Thank you so much for the reply! When I was a kid, I remember a camping trip we went on and just how bright the Coleman version of the Tilly was. It lit the entire area of out campsite beyond anything I expected. It put out a fair amount of heat too! Was curious because I live in North Dakota and was looking for a good source of heat in Winter power outages. It does happen here once every 10 to 20 years that a major system is affected by a blizzard or a flood, leading to downed power lines, etc. The house I live in does not have a fireplace. (Was designed for a wood stove, but that was sadly removed.) So I am interested in something that would not only light a room, but keep it warm. Psychological speaking, light is a VERY important item to have in any disaster and of course heat is critical as well. I have quite a collection of old Dietz lanterns and their brethren like railroad signal lamps that I restore, but I always wondered about these pressurized ones. Safety wise, a "hurricane lamp" or its railroad version will go out if you tip one over. Is the same true of a Tilly? Being pressurized, does the fuel continue to flow if tipped over? Sorry for chattering on here- nice to see someone that appreciates the fascinating technology of lamps and lanterns!

Hi Broadlander. In your experience, how often should you need to cycle the needle into the orifice to keep it from clogging? Right now, the jet in my Tilley seems to do about 15-20min before paraffin flow becomes low, and light output falls. Cycling the cleaning needle fixes it. Is this normal? Also a X246B MK1.
@broadlander1398
@broadlander1398 2 месяца назад
@@bevanjones7480 Hi Bevan. Definitely not that frequently, the answer appears to be with the vaporiser. The easiest and most expensive fix is a new one. The better option is to use a blow torch to heat and quench the vaporiser, by cycling this several times the thermal shock should expel parts of baked on and loose carbon deposits from the inside tube. Once done you should notice a marked improvement in the performance of the lamp. I would probably flush the tank and fill with fresh paraffin, clean the gauze filter on the bottom of the control cock and replace the rubber seals etc with new (part no. 498 www.base-camp.co.uk/tilley.html). Please let me know if you require any further information and also how you progress. Enjoy your lamp and thanks for asking me to assist. Regards Broadlander

@@broadlander1398 Thanks! Any suggestions on the type of oil to quench it in? I've got a MAP torch to heat it. I've already tried putting it in an ultrasonic bath with hot water and vinegar. That removed a whole lot of the carbon and gunk off the outside of the vaporizer. The forementioned Tilly was my grandfathers, and is the only thing of his which I have. I'd like to keep it as original as I can. It's got a chromed base which looks pretty beaten up, and the cage has a fair bit of rust coming through the chroming. Still, it's got character.
@broadlander1398
@broadlander1398 2 месяца назад
@@bevanjones7480 Hi. The Map gas will be perfect, all you need is some clean cold water to create the thermal shock. You should be able to see the carbon being ejected which is quite satisfying and also proof you are having an effect. Also good you have an ultrasonic bath as you could give it another session after the heat/quench sequence. Once done I would try running it for a couple of evenings knowing I may have to clean the jet by using the control cock quite regularly as there are still small parts of carbon flaking off. A good bit of use after cleaning should hopefully burn it through. If all else fails you can purchase a new vaporiser (part no. 606), new old stock will be better than the new ones which are of fairly dubious quality. Regards Broadlander

Hi there ..mantles well I have 3 tilleys... 2 guardsmans 1 x 246b and I make all my own mantles from cheap Chinee Hk500 Butterfly mantles...its a little fiddly but it is cheap and easy ... Chinee mantles are 1hole ...so what you do is make a bottom hole ... so turn mantle inside out ..make hole with tool pencil is the best ..place on burner spigot tie with sweet/ or gardening / freeezer bag metal tie around tube.Pull mantle over and tie at top ...flare out the mantle ... light and the mantle will " bell shape " giving a great shape..so again .. I find poking the bottom sewn up end through the top (once you've loosened the draw string) to be the most fiddly part but they do work really well as you've found out. Quite often the mantles sold as suitable for Tilleys are so small, they're useless, fiddly to put on and give a feeble light output. Technically, the output is governed by fuel pressure and throughout and has little to do with mantle size but my experience says otherwise so I'll keep using the larger butterfly mantles! 10 Mantles on e bay delivered for £1.70 !!!!! ... have fun ...

Brian Leahy. Hi, I mention making sure the control cock cock is closed (around the 3.07 mark) for my method of lighting a Tilley. You can light a Tilley without closing the control cock once the vaporiser and burner are hot enough. By gently adding the first ten to twelve pumps with the control cock open the the lamp should gently light. After 30 seconds or so to allow for stabilisation and then you can add the remainder of the pumps. Either way if the lamp is in order it should light without any hitches, really it is just a preference as to the method used. Hope this helps. Regards Broadlander

@broadlander1398
@broadlander1398 6 лет назад
Hi WARRICK Tyler. Glad you found the video useful. The symptoms suggest a pressure leak which is more likely to be a seal which hasn't seated properly and should be fairly easy to track down. Carefully remove the hood and burner assembly and store safely so as not to damage the mantle. Method no. 1: empty paraffin from tank, close control cock and tighten pump. Apply 50 or so pumps to pressurise the tank and dunk in a large bucket of water. Escaping bubbles will locate any leaks. - Pros and cons: best method for finding leaks but you need to dry off the lamp especially the steel components to prevent rusting. Method no. 2: Prepare as method no. 1 but instead of dunking brush soapy water (washing up liquid is ideal) around all joints and look for bubbles forming. Hopefully this will identify the problem area to enable it to be rectified however, please let me know how you get on and I will try to help further if required. Regards Broadlander

Which paraffin do you use or recommend?
@broadlander1398
@broadlander1398 Месяц назад
@@jorkins5 Until recently I used to purchase my paraffin from my local hardware shop which had a 1000 litre tank. Sadly it has changed hands and this is no longer available to me. I will continue to buy the much more expensive pre-packed paraffin for my pressure stoves and will use 28 sec heating oil (syphoned from my heating oil tank) for my outdoor lamps/lanterns. It is basically the same burn-wise but is lees refined regarding the liquid odour, basically it stinks!

@@broadlander1398so, you use normal heating oil? That works? I wasn't sure about that

@@jorkins5 My heating oil is known as “28 sec” and works fine. I’m not sure if all heating oil is the same the world over but this is an interesting article from the UK: www.which.co.uk/reviews/heating-oil/article/heating-oil-explained/what-is-heating-oil-axKFs4A8aH5V

Hi Mike. I purchase my paraffin from my local hardware store in the village which works out about the same price as petroleum spirit and I generally use this in indoor lamps, heaters and stoves. My heating/hot water is from an oil fired boiler which uses 28sec heating oil which is to all intents and purposes paraffin which has not had the smells removed. When our tank is topped up I generally siphon 20-30 litres into Jerry cans and this usually lasts me half a year or so. My advise would be to contact a local supplier and see if they can help either in bulk cans or from a top up from their depot. Alternatively find a good hearted neighbour who can sell you some at cost. Regards Broadlander
