Time Team S19-E04 The First King of Racing

Tony and the Team visit Newmarket, the birthplace of horseracing, in search of the earliest archaeological traces of the sport of kings. They dig in the heart of the historic town, in search of the remains of King Charles II's racing stables - arguably the world's first stables dedicated for racing.
It's the last chance to work here, as construction is about to begin on a multi-million-pound National Horseracing Museum.
From the start of the dig, the challenge for the Team is to find evidence that will enable them to distinguish a racing stable from an 'ordinary' royal stable block. The pressure's on for team leader Jackie McKinley to deliver the key small find or insight. With a thick layer of concrete lying over the site, it's not an easy task.
And across the road from the stables site, there's a second area to explore: King Charles II's 17th-century Newmarket palace. To add to the excitement, there's the prospect of Tony Robinson attempting to ride a mechanical racehorse, and a team visit to the racecourse on Ladies Day.

First: Thank you so much Reijer Zaaijer for sharing Time Team with those of us who can only watch it in this format. I have watched the entire series once already and am now on my second "watch-through". Second: The hostility for Mary Ann I believe has to do more with change and the introduction of new caste members with die-hard fans of the show more than anything to do with her personality or qualifications. I was of the belief that Tony was the Host, or "television presenter" as he sometimes referred to himself, of the show throughout, and never thought of anyone else as a "Co-Host", as it was not needed. Mick I loved in all his gruffness and slightly crazy professor image, no matter what. In any event, I only wished the series could have found a way to continue. I have watched the American version of Time Team, and well, it was a good try, but lacked something, (most likely it just lacked; Romans, Anglo-Saxons, unexpected roundhouse finds,Tony, Phil, Stuart, John... and so on, lol).

It doesn't help Mary Ann when the producers stick her in a sports car with a multi-millionaire, and have them come roaring up with boobs bouncing and her mega-watt smile firmly fixed on the gentleman. None of her credentials mean crap when she asks him for another "spin" before getting down to archaeology business. ( Time Team S19-E07 The Only Earl Is Essex). They totally turned her into a coy tart. After seasons of down-to-earth women like Brigid, Raksha, Helen and the little diggers, it's really hard to watch now.

Having watched the entire series from the beginning of the uploads, for which Reijer Zaaijer must be sincerely thanked, I have enjoyed the constant comradery, joking, and friendly rivalry (amongst other things) that the members of Time Team, and their hosts/hostesses have displayed. That all changed with the introduction of the two new members, especially the female, whose qualifications I do not know, and the same level of teamwork appears to have become seriously diminished, although it still appears to be retained between themselves. There are odd moments when they attempt to include the new people but with a distinct lack of enthusiasm most of the time. Phil is usually the easiest going member but even he can be seen glancing sideways at her when she makes obtuse statements and observations.
@josskiteley
@josskiteley 9 лет назад
She's got a masters in archaeology apparently. She was obviously bought in to play the 'enthusiastic amateur' role that Tony played for all of those years. It doesn't work though as she's of a totally different social group to the rest of the team. The other guy seems to be a straight swap for Stewart, which again ruins the whole team ethos as Stewart and John's insights and squabbles were what made the programme so watchable.

I'm not sure, but this may be the first time Dr. Jackie McKinley was made Site Director. I wish they had continued the trend to promote team members to Directors. Raksha Dave would have been a great Site Director. The office types who ruined this show starting "lightening up" the show 3-4 years before this season. However, all at once they dumped the production crew, replaced a lot of the diggers, brought in two new (one inexperienced) presenters, cut corners on experts, and introduced more non-archaeology. That plus changing the air dates around resulted in the death of the show. Mary-Ann Ochota was sort of a lightning rod for complaints. Although she had the education, she didn't have any field experience to speak of, unlike the other young women from earlier (Carenza Lewis and Helen Geake). The producers did both her and Mick Aston a disservice, and the viewers are the ones who have suffered the loss of a formerly great series.

Can't say this was a very good episode as it didn't really answer their initial question and so resorted to showing lots of filler. They start with a map, and saying it was a big stable near a race track, but they need evidence that it housed race horses, not just regular horses. And after 3 days of digging they concluded that it was a big stable near a race track THEREFORE probably housed race horses. The only real unknown they covered is that the wall that showed up on the geophysics was a similar phase of construction as the rest, rather than being an earlier phase, but they just told you that in 30s at the end. You didn't get to see them work it out as in older time teams. There was very little mystery and discovery, which the older series were good on, and it just feels more scripted and less spontaneous.

I've seen so many people complaining about Mary-Ann and Alex. Why? What exactly did either of them say or do? Mary-Ann is educated in the subjects of archaeology and anthropology, she has the credentials to present the info, sure she is awkward at times, but think back to the start of time team and how often was Tony or any of the others kinda awkward in some situations, people need to remember the show was running for about 18 years before they brought in Mary-Ann, you cannot expect her to just jump right in and have no awkwardness with people that have been working together for years and years. Yes, Alex was brought in to replace Stewart, however think how long the show had already been running, Stewart wasn't really young back then either, he was getting up there in years and probably wanting to retire or semi-retire so they needed someone to take his place. Do you people have any actual problems or issues with Mary-Ann and Alex or is it just that you don't like change and want everything to stay the same and if it doesn't stay the same then we should not have it at all?
@karmicpopcorn6440

The first episode with Alex, he pointed out field boundaries that were clearly on the surface, it didn't look like he did any kind of serious map reading or field walking. And Mary shows no intelligence, scripted Tony questions. If it's the producers fault that they look useless, fair enough.

The hate for Mary-Ann is absolutely ludicrous. She's got a Master's degree in Anthropology and Archeology from Cambridge University. Her credentials match or exceed most of the cast members of Time Team, going back to the origins of the show. She's got an excellent education in the appropriate field of study for a program based on archeology, and they brought her in to be a CO-HOST. That's the real insult. Mick was a remarkable personality and a good historian, but he acted like an asshole about Mary-Ann, and pitched a temper tantrum and left even after the BBC gave in to his wishes and decided not to renew her contract. She was treated like shit, and was basically forced out of a role that she was good at. The show lasted for 20 years, and was in a noticeable decline for the last 4-5 of those. Mick had a personality clash with her, pure and simple. His legacy is solid, but his behavior towards the cast of Time Team in its last years is a disgrace. Tony didn't understand it either, based on several interviews he gave before Mick's death.
@fedraescuderohaldane6962
@fedraescuderohaldane6962 8 лет назад
+The Choll Mick did not quit solely because of Mary-Ann. There was a lot more to it than just a new co-host. Starting with their 200th episode, Channel 4 decided to move their production base from London to Cardiff, causing the original production team that was with them for 18 years to be disbanded. C4 had been messing with the format for a while. Starting at about series 16 they started to focus less on the archaeology and more on what Mick called faffing about, but there was still quite a lot of archaeological information in the show. In this series, they changed the formatting radically. Then C4 changed up the viewing times and of course the show lost numbers. The addition of 2 new cast members at the expense of Helen and Stewart, who are much more informative and knowledgeable, is what broke Mick's back. Not Mary-Ann herself. It was reported scandalously in the Daily Mail as being all down to her, but that's not the truth of the matter. Mick was well aware of the network doing all this because they wanted to give the show the axe. TT was just about C4's most expensive show to produce and the trend was going towards stupid reality TV with high viewership. C4 wanted to add cheaper to produce shows to their schedule, but until TT lost viewing numbers, there wasn't a good enough reason to cancel it.

@The Choll > well she is young, a woman and she is pretty. Oh and did I mention.... shes a woman. All traits that will work against her. A young woman that dont look like a dustbin on legs cant be clever also ... right ?

Unfortunately, it appears a lot of people assumed that. I get so tired of reading comments based on her looks and assumptions that she is stupid. It was never questioned with Tony. I have read the comments on every one of these videos more than once and never saw one person bring it up. But with a woman it's a common response. It seems like it's the same old problem professional women face in so many positions. The men are assumed to be smarter and better educated, or not even questioned about it at all, but a woman is questioned and has to prove herself to even be on a level playing field. If she bitches about she is often treated as if she wanted special treatment.

@@billie-jobenway8658 Personnality was the issue . Age looks and youth had nothing to do with it . ANY person taking on the role is compared regardless and if one of the issues being they dont have 3 decades of experience then theres a legitimtate reason to critique . I`m pozz the only person giving a toss about her being female is yourself . Seek sexist issues and you will find them regardless if they are there or not . Bitching about a lack of level playing field means those in charge do not wear some moaning blinkered moron within there field of expertise . @@godzillas6301 She was there to be a presenter, just like Tony. She has more education on the subject than Tony. Period. Tony started out with an acting career. That and he was friends with a few of them. What part of an acting career and being friends with archaeologists makes you more suited to the job? As for personality being the issue, sure, she didn't fit in smoothly from the start among a crew that had been together for 18 seasons. Still, there have been plenty of male experts on the show that were hard to get used to or who were awkward interacting with others, but they didn't get commented on like she did. People looked past their personality deficits or quirks and often commented on their knowledge if they commented on them at all. I love Stewart but he was awkward for a while. Should we have talked about him like this or dismissed his knowledge? As for your 3 decades of experience comment, I have been talking about the way she is compared to Tony, not the other experts with experience at their chosen profession. You're straw manning this argument. Of course the opinions of the experts on the show mean more than hers on matters of archaeology. To say otherwise would be ridiculous as she has education but lacks experience. As for your comment about sexism, it's easy to deny sexism affects females in the workplace when you are not directly affected by it. I cannot be so blissfully unaware, nor can millions of other women. We don't need someone like you to verify it's existence for us before we see it as real. Facts are facts. Further, a level playing field does not mean a person with less education or experience gets to be taken as seriously as one with more. It simply means equal education and experience should result in equal status, no more no less.

@@billie-jobenway8658 If she were just a presenter then they would have taken on a presenter and not someone with a career as an arco .... so she was ment to bring more to the fold .... Everyone USED to be considered for there looks . Wild hair , suspect facial hair , pisstaken for being old fat or even down to what they wear be it a daft hat , pigtail or a stripey jumper !!!!! But then critque is always directed at women alone isnt it so it doesnt count if it is toward a male ...... But then what would you know ? in the same breath YOU can`t represent millions of womens experience and can only speak of you`re own . You do not have the life experience no more than i do . I have never once come across a single female held back , treated differently , repressed or victimised , not 1 , not 1 in 50 years on this planet and not 1 single historic reference that can demonstrate the same ........ This glass ceiling , you assume is simply an assumption . Yes there are pricks in this world who will keep the status quo as they like it and yes the exact same distasteful virtues are shown from women when empowered given its a biological contruct within us all that we gravitate toward the same . But it is not rife , normal or easy to find even single cases of the rampent sexism you assume ..... only in the mindset of those with motive toward seeking blame regardless of blame being there . In a world where women are valued without a doubt its a struggle to find a single case but easy to find millions of references to sexist behavious , guess why ?.

It doesn't really matter whether MaryAnne is smart or not, she gets stupid lines scripted for her. It's plain they intended her to be an eye-candy bimbo in a tight T-shirt, no matter what her qualifications were.

Thanks for the upload Reijer, but god, if I could watch a version without Mary whatever in it that would be so much better, she basically destroyed the show with her I’m guessing scripted stupid questions and that asinine smile 🤡 it’s so painful when she’s on 🤦🏻‍♂️
