Michelle Meldrum should be on the 100 greatest guitarist list of all time. She out plays most of the men on those list. And no one can argue against what I just said 🎸
@@alrockman9817 the guitar work between Michelle and Jan is so good. They left both in bad ways but the work left by them is what we have to trmemberr them by and I will be sure to do just that.
Why do you guys always have to compare women to being better than men at something just to gain upvotes or approval? I'll never understand this behavior. Just because some chick died that people barely even heard of could play a few riffs on a guitar that you liked personally doesn't mean she belongs on a list. Besides I'm sure the list of hundred guitarist weren't all men anyways. Hell Phantom Blue couldn't even outlast L7, a female grunge band from the 90s that gained attention faster than Phantom Blue did. And they didn't start out mainstream either. Which means Phantom Blue either sucked or people didn't find their music all that compelling enough to care about them so they went under. Once L7 debuted nobody even cared about Phantom Blue, hell the band Girlschool got more attention than they did. That's why they didn't make it on a list. Honestly there never were that many female bands and guitarist in metal to begin with. Most of the women in the 80s especially were either into dancing or acoustic. When you have these top 100 list the reason you see few women on those list is because they didn't have many. Not in metal and rock music anyway, acoustic there's hundreds of women on top 100 list.
WynneL Well you my friend are probably not so old and decrepit like myself who was there on the Sunset Strip back in the 80's and early 90.s worshiping bands like Phantom Blue I myself had a huge crush on Gigi for the longest time. The rest of this album kicks ass too.
WynneL- I know it's been three years since your post but had to reply because you took the words right outta my mouth. I grew up partying in the 80's and a lot of 90's , hell I still party but I thought I knew every metal band out there sooo... all I can say is damn I'm glad I found this. Peace, 420 every day!!
First time hearing this band .sound great .think I'm gonna grab the volume and introduce them to the neighbors might lean on it so the folks up the block can listen too.
Three of the best and most amazing female Hard Rock guitarists of all time are already in the Heaven: Jan Kuehnemund, Kelly Johnson and Michelle Meldrum.
How the bloody hell could I have been sooooo into hard rock and metal... Gen X and not ever heard this incredible band???? OMG am I glad I tripped over this video!!! Soooooo good!!!
Forget the fact they were all female. One of the best bands ever that hardly anyone seems to know. I have both their studio albums. If you find a copy then you should pick them up but they don't generally come cheap. I have the 2nd album on CD but the vinyl is on my wish list.
My god they blew my mind all those years ago! To the young metalhead me they were like angels sent from heaven to bring the word. And the word was METAL!! Still one of the best tracks of all time.
@@Jasonjk74 yeah that works, she's definitely got a great voice. I appreciate it, sincerely. In my not so humble opinion truly great female metal vocalist are a rarity. I'm always happy to come across one. I can't believe I wasn't familiar with this band. I mean I was aware that they existed I had just never taken a real look... Thanks again
@@MG-cx7fd no doubt that's a tight band, and she's got a great voice, but for me the chick from Phantom Blue is just straight up next level, the power she can bring is crazy. Absolutely not to take away from The Warning as I said they are a great band not to mention they have some great songs. I was there when everyone was hyping The Runaways as this "great band" which they absolutely were not, admittedly I kind of tuned out to the possibility of chicks in metal for a while. I was wrong, it is possible
I will never understand why this group was not more popular than they were. These women are not just pretty faces with gorgeous bodies. They are really talented musicians and they should have been much much bigger than Vixen and Lita Ford. How in the world did Geffen records not promote them the way they should have been.
Im so lucky to have seen them live in a small club around '93 or 94. I got the built to perform CD that night, still one of my favorite metal albums. The guitar tone and playing is great!
Just learned about Michelle's passing yesterday. Can't stop thinking about her. She played almost all guitar parts on this entire album by the way folks(!) Truly talented AND Beautiful... One in a billion, RIP Michelle Meldrum... Steve
Damnnn I’m just learning about this band in 2020 .. so much good metal got lost and not air played enough in certain areas .. but here now in 2020 rip Michelle your solos were beautiful and this whole band KICKED ASS 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🎸🎸🎸🎸
I've made it my life's work to seek out and acquire every great hard rock and metal album ever made! I know own about 2000 hard rock/metal albums! This band is responsible for the single greatest hard rock album by an all-female band in history! Phantom Blue's "Built To Perform" is that album! An absolute scorcher from top to bottom-do whatever you can to obtain this treasure! Check out their cover of Lizzy's "Bad Reputation".....Oh My Lord are these woman just killin' it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ohhh michelle meldrum you blew my head , I could listen you playing all day .Its a pity God took to the grreat band he s forming in heaven to see you one day and God bleess you, keep on playng babe....
Saw these guys in Norwich UK, in 93/94.Believe me they rocked the house down. They deserved better success.A spot with Metallica and they would have been massive. The album , Built to perform is awesome. One of the few rock albums i still have.
If there is ever a Rock N Roll battle of the sexes, the ladies are going to have this one spinning in their corner and its gonna be hard to beat. One of the most bad ass songs ever written in my humble opinion. Rock on ladies.
+Rob Allen- I don't know what it is about you but you seem like the kind of guy that I would like to sit down with and have one or fifteen beers with. Maybe smoke a fatty and talk about the good ol days.Peace brother.
Used to see these chicks in Metal Edge magazine a lot, back in the day, but never heard them until now. It's truly my loss for missing out all these years. But just goes to show, better late than never! \m/
Wow, this is some seriously heavy shit! Orientally spiced heavy metal always makes my heart go wild...and when an all-female band (with a vocalist of this caliber!!!) does it, it's very special!
Sabbathman1979 I totally dig them to but I'm not sure what you mean by orientally spiced? You do know they are from Southern California right? Anyway the lead singer Gigi is one of my all time favorites and if it wasn't for grundge this band would have been huge.
Rob Allen Yeah, the death metal band Nile is from South Carolina and they play music that is completely and heavily Orientally spiced...This song "Time To Run" includes some nice Oriental spices in the musical structure...

Orientally? Nile makes Egyptian sounding riffs. Oriental is Asian, dude. Nile sounds nothing like an Asian band.
what ya'll arguing about, this is a bloody brilliant song and Gigi Hangach belongs to the absolute top tier of rock vocalists of any gender. the overall musicianship of this band just blows me away every time. how a band of this level never made it to the charts beats me
This is from a great album. Which featured Marty Friedman, and I think was produced by Max Norman (Bark at the Moon / Countdown To Extinction)! So these girls are proper metal! :)
Well I'm standing at the front line My life seems like a war And I'm so tired of fighting babe Don't wanna see your face no more Well I think you know it's over It's better left undone Now I will soon be going 'Cause the things you've said and done I know baby it's time to run Why don't you open your eyes And I know Baby your time has come It's time to run When I'm talking to ya boy I might be talkin to the wall Now I've got news for you You just ain't no fun at all I don't hear a word for me I don't hear your words at all You better watch your step 'Cause you're heading for a fall I just wanna walk away I just turn my back and say Baby your time has come I'm so tired I'm so confused Twice around I've paid my dues Baby it's time to run
...i'll love this forever... what a great voice, such an unique singer and great roaring guitars and such heavy drums and massive bass .... big wow ever since! I mean this (and of course all) song(s) sounds modern forever! Brilliant Album... \m/,
Been FB friends bantering with with this nice lady & she told me she used to be in a band ! Had no clue Couch was pulling this kinda music off ! Great stuff
What the hell happened to me? How did I never hear 'bout them? They're AWESOME and they kick A$$! My God, maybe it's DEFINITELY to run back to the source !🤘🤘
51 old man from japan, I still remenber them i have their all albums vo gigi hangach gt michel meldrum gt nicole couch gt karen kreuzter bass kim nielsen drs linda mccdnalds i still remenber all name and listen phantom blue!!
Been loving all the women in rock these days, Lzzy, Taylor Momsen, Maria Brink. Missed these girls when they came out , friend turned me on to them about 10 years ago, so good
I remember seeing this on MTV and was blown away (I think I have it recorded on some VHS somewhere), just like I was when I saw Smells Like Teen Spirit for the first time. I can't understand why this video/band wasn't aired more. They would have changed the whole scenery if more people had heard them. It's kinda unfair.
Well I'm standing at the front line My life seems like a war And I'm so tired of fighting babe Don't wanna see your face no more Well I think you know it's over It's better left undone Now I will soon be going Cause the things you've said and done (Chorus) I know, baby it's time to run Why don't you open your eyes And I know, baby your time has come It's time to run (Post Chorus) Your time has come baby It's time to run Your time has come baby It's time to run When I'm talkin' to ya boy I might be talkin' to the wall Now I've got news for you You just ain't no fun at all I don't hear a word for me I don't hear your words at all You better watch your step Cause your heading for a fall (Chorus) I just want to walk away I just turn my back and say Baby your time has come I'm so tired, I'm so confused Twice around I've paid my dues Baby it's time to run (Chorus 2X)
I was lucky enough to meet these ladies back in 1990/91 in a small rock club in Birkenhead, England called Stairways. Their show was awesome. Has anyone got a recording of Phantom Blues' cover version of Fairies Wear Boots? If so, any chance of an upload? Michelle....always missed! xx
