I'd say after a certain point, I was in a relationship with my husband after meeting him online, we planned to marry and got married after meeting twice in person. We've been together 15 years now. There are a number of things that told me he was trustworthy though and yes he asked me for money twice once to buy a phone card and the other time to pay for some goods so he could sell them and get his visa. That was £250. He never asked me for anything else and that was after knowing him 8 months. We talked on the phone often and those times video was only at internet cafes but we did it plus I got to know his family (who I've still never met just due to life). I dated him with my eyes open, he's Nigerian. I honestly was thinking yeah maybe he's scamming me but there comes a point where you have to give people a chance just don't be blind or put yourself harm's way. Actually maybe he is scamming me. He's still not given me back that £250 😂😂😂😂

That’s not true necessarily. Took me 6mons to meet my soulmate in person, we met online, mind you neither of us are scammers or catfishing lol but still just because the world is full of those things it doesn’t mean you can’t meet someone legit online.

You are so right about that! I will lend anyone I know a small amount of money and then wait to see if they pay it back. If they don't pay it back I have a perfect reason for saying no the next time they ask. Every friend that I have loaned money to has paid me back and a couple have borrowed from me again. Every relative (1 brother, 2 nieces and 1 nephew) has failed the test. It was actually worth it for me to lose the money to stop them from asking.

They often start with smaller amounts early so they don't waste their time. Most scammers don't ask for $1000 up front. They start with amounts ranging from $25-200 to see if they have the person hooked. They assume if someone ponies up smaller amounts within the first few weeks, then they can invest in the long con to eventually get tens of thousands of dollars over the next months or even years. But if the person says no or blocks them when they ask, they cut off contact and move on to the next one

Then I met a man 18 years younger than me who never asked anything from me, except love and time for him each time he came to visit me. It was beautiful, but being so much older than he was, I got tired of playing girlfriend. We remained friends and he is still wonderful. However... That was way before scammers were a common thing. Today, I am single, older, and I wouldn't risk anything for someone I have never seen in person. And I don't believe long-distance, no-contact romance.

A friend who is married next weekend to a guy she met online told me that her rule was that if they won't meet for a first date within a week of connecting online, she would not keep talking to them. If they said they were out of town or out of the country, she told them she was not interested in anything long-distance and not to contact her again until they were back in town and able to meet in person. She met some creeps in person, but avoided getting scammed online and they stopped targeting her because they knew she wouldn't keep talking to them if they couldn't meet.

Oh, and the story is fairly cut and dry, usually we see these people led on for months and heartache when the scammer is revealed. But idk lol, it felt different to me too.

Just curious but how long ago did he do online dating and did they live far apart? I have several friends who did online dating and got married but that was maybe 15 or more years ago. Could be there were less scammers at that time. Plus, they all married local men so they met up quickly.

I know a couple who just had their 4 year anniversary. They met on Christian Mingle.

I know at least 8 couples who met through online dating including a wedding I'm going to next weekend. My brother met his wife online. But in every case, the couple lived within an hour of each other and they met in person for a first date within a few days of meeting online. I don't know anyone who has had a successful online relationship that was long distance or waited months to meet. I'm sure it happens, but not to any of the couples I know. They all met within a few days, maybe maximum a week, after they first started chatting online.
