Having suffered with severe tinnitus since returning from Vietnam in 1969 I can well imagine how it could drive people to suicidal thoughts. Most people have no idea how bad it can be.

Unfortunately most doctors and or ENTs just say there's nothing you can do about it and just say to just live with it. Maybe that happened to Kent. I went to an ENT and audiologist office in Portland, Oregon and they just said theres nothing you can do about it, and that your hearing is as good as a new born baby. It's great to see audiologist like yourself giving all the treatment options, and creating a network of great audiologist who will provide treatment options. Thank you for all that you do and putting the word out there.
@vxinos
@vxinos 2 года назад
Yeah I get the sane response from ENTs and doctors too. But I had one audiologist suggest having some soft sound source to disguise the tinnitus and it helps. Once I was told my tinnitus is from my moderately severe hearing loss and it’s my brain making up sounds I no longer hear And that wearing hearing aids helps. It encouraged me to wear my hearing aids all the time. It does make a big difference

Sometimes it’s still extreme and caused stress and anxiety but I know it will pass and calm down. We are not alone it affects so many. Seeing a therapist who understands is so beneficial as well as being open with your friend and family. Just hold on you will get past it. Thank you for the video.

However, anxiety,depression, and lack of confidence in myself started when I lost my hearing as a teenager. To me, that was harder than dealing with tinnitus. I DO REMEMBER him getting irritated at very small annoyances though. ...so it doesn't surprise me Tinnitus was just too much. He seemed sensitive in those ways. I'm so so sad he did that. He did it too fast and just after the Vaccine. He didn't give a chance to acclimate. But we will never know really how bad his was. Mine is pretty severe and I almost lost it and thought I might leave also. But it took TIME. And I got through the worse part and am ok now. Not great but safe and ok.

I have 24/7 high pitched tinnitus in one ear; however, some days it sounds like it's in both ears - but I have the hearing loss in my right ear. I have had it since Feb 2020. I think my hearing loss was caused by out-of-control stress. I woke up one morning with sudden hearing loss, despite hearing fine the day before. I think sudden hearing loss is the worst, because you go from having good hearing to persistent hissing. It is like going 100 mph and slamming on the brakes - you just aren't prepared. I have noticed during the past 5 years that my stress has gotten worse and worse, and I have panic attacks from time to time that makes it almost impossible to hold a glass of water without spilling it, especially in the mornings. I have to take anxiety medication just to get by. In my opinion, the worst aspect of tinnitus is not the sound itself, but the stress that it bathes your body in. Since I acquired this tinnitus (high-pitch), I have developed things like skin rashes, constipation, numbness in my legs, a large knot at the base of my neck that an orthopedic doctor told me was a calcium deposit from soft tissue injury. I think it's from having a stiff neck and never being able to relax. I have developed moderate eyelid twitching (maybe due to lack of deep sleep), and so on. I am going for a stress test this Monday because I have had chest aches and light-headedness. This tinnitus is slowly destroying me and is hard to ignore. At this rate I won't have to commit suicide, I will just die earlier than my time.

This is, of course, wise and humane advice. We know that for a large majority of sufferers T can be mitigated and life, even if its enjoyment is impaired, remains very much worth living. The battle can be very long and debilitating though, and coping strategies that worked at onset, and perhaps for years afterwards, can fail - particularly with age-related deterioration in hearing. As we know, some T, particularly the reactive kind, is not maskable by any of the usual techniques - especially in the silence of the night and when sleep (if it comes), takes away conscious control of coping.

There is another possible solution; make it part of your meditation practice. I've practiced Vipassana meditation for over ten years now. In this, and many forms of meditation, the breath is used as a focus for your practice. If, however, something else is grabbing your attention (car alarm, barking dog, etc.) then use that thing as your meditation focus. I've had a mild form of tinnitus that has come and gone over the years and have absolutely used it as my meditation focus with very good results.

With my hearing aids my tinnitus is much softer but I still need background noise or soft music or audio book tv show etc. but when I take them off it can be deafening. I also recently was without hearing aids for over a week while mine were being repaired beside not being able to communicate with anyone while I was waiting. I’m moderately severe hearing loss. The tinnitus 24 hours a day was torture. I really do wish there were better options. Have I had suicidal thoughts over my tinnitus? Probably but I’ve definitely buds suicidal thoughts over my head their issues like chronic pain that makes it difficult to walk for long periods of times. We im the chronic pain community use the term passively suicidal. Meaning we think about ending it all but are in too much Odin or too tired to follow through with it. I have to admit this past couple of years there’s been a couple of times I have gotten close to doing it. But I start to think of all the people in my life that would be devastated if I did and that helps me keep going and fighting. This is the life I’ve been given it’s not up to me to end it. I pray for everyone who suffers with this condition or anything else that makes them think oh ending their lives.

I am one of the lucky ones with tinnitus. The first time I had tinnitus was after being an extremely stressful situation for about a week and then when I returned home it sounded like a bubbles in my ears. I had heard about diaphragmatic breathing and I didn't exactly believe in it but it fit into my criteria of if it doesn't take a lot of resources and won't hurt me it might help me I'll try it. I don't think I even did it actually correctly but boom it just ended that tinnitus. Then maybe 6 months or a year later I was grinding something in a coffee grinder that was too hard and it was very noisy and I ended up with roaring tinnitus. Much much worse than bubbly tinnitus. I really had no hope that diaphragmatic breathing would help me but it did. I don't know how the vagus nerve is all connected with tinnitus and indeed it might not be in every person's case but it was for me. So that's just another option that people can try. It's free it's easy it doesn't take a lot of time and in my case it was extremely effective. It's easy to just look up diaphragmatic breathing on RU-vid or other places online and it's a very simple process. When I had the roaring tinnitus and I was sure that the diaphragmatic breathing would not help it I was extremely distressed. It did not take me very long to try diaphragmatic breathing. But if I hadn't I think my quality of life would have been very negatively impacted by it. Just FYI from my own personal experience.

Suicide=Silence When I got COVID my tinnitus went to a level I never thought possible. I spent 35 years dealing with and managing my ringing and now it's louder than ever. I had my first anxiety attack the other day during which I used the words "it's not fair" for the first time. I'm now homeless, jobless and have been trying to get disability for almost 3 years. I just now got a hearing date of August 20. I am not the person I used to be, i feel like I'm living someone else's life. I am so looking forward to silence. I just don't know when that day will come.

When I was younger I had a pencil led stuck in my left ear and the doctor told me to not use headphones for a month cause I talked about getting pain. I wished the doctor told me about developing tinnitus, I can still hear good but now I have tinnitus because I didn't know that it's something you can develop and that it is irreversible. This morning I got a panic attack so bad due to tinnitus that it made me nauseous and I had to stay home from work. I'm only in my early 20s and one of my biggest fear is hearing loss before old age now I'm scared that tinnitus will make my depression worst, I used music to help with my autistic stims now I don't know what I'm going to do because I don't think I can afford hearing aids

The doctor mentions those with extreme tinnitus as being a tiny percentage of tinnitus sufferers. The title of the clip is Tinnitus & Suicidal Thoughts. The only possible solution for those with suicidal tinnitus is surgery and cutting edge experimental technology. Masking and white noise are for simple to moderate cases. Anytime someone mentions masking to me or hearing aids, I know right away they don't understand extreme tinnitus. I have had "typical" tinnitus for decades (2 to 5 on a scale of 0-10), and then it got much, much worse. Mine is a 7 every day at best. It fluctuates between a 7 and 10. When it hits 9 and 10, there is almost nothing that overrules suicide when the pain is that bad. I think people and even experts who say suicide is never the answer have no idea how bad tinnitus can be and just say that to sound professional and virtue signal. There is a point with cancer patients where people are starting to understand the the agony is better ended sooner rather than later. They will cure cancer before they will cure suicidal tinnitus. The only thing we can do is grind, grind, grind until they come up with a genuine cure. There is only so long a person can grind away with extreme, suicidal tinnitus though. It is time for experts to acknowledge the futility and hopelessness of extreme tinnitus.

No offense, but there is not always a treatment option that exists. Saying so does a huge disservice to people who are hanging on by a thread. Sure, you can "imagine" how bad it can get, but if you don't have it severe/catastrophic, you have absolutely no idea. That's like trying to imagine what being schizophrenic would be -- it's just not possible unless you were to live it. We need REAL treatment options, treatment options that eliminate the signal or greatly reduce it. Not BS sound therapy, CBT etc. Would you tell someone with a broken leg to be mindful about it? No, you would fix it.

Unfortunately, the majority of health insurance offers minimal coverage for hearing. This is a major obstacle for most. Especially since hearing aids and other treatments are prohibitively expensive. I am covered under the VA since my tinnitus was caused by service in the Marines. Most of these therapies are not offered through the VA. I am lucky to have hearing aids covered through them, which are $6,000 each ear. The hearing aids do not reduce my screaming bilateral tinnitis that I've had for over 30 years now, but they do improve my word recognition to 85%. Which still means I still can't understand everyone all the time. I've never been suicidal, but I've considered jamming sharp objects in my ears to get it to stop. The funny thing is, with Covid and people wearing masks, I've discovered that there are a lot of people with functional hearing loss.

There is a lot more than 10% of people with tinnitus without hearing loss, today sommatic and stress tinnitus is as common as hearing loss tinnitus. Also, I’ve read some serious studies that found out that even people with chronic tinnitus for many years, some of them reported their tinnitus disappeared out of the blue one day, so its a myth that tinnitus never goes away. Also, doing proper sound therapy, you can get in 6 months to a year to such a high degree of habituation that some individuals claim they just cannot hear their ringing anymore. People who claim to have had severe tinnitus for 30+ years are in this situation because they didnt work on proper habituation techniques, or never found out and treated the root cause of their tinnutus. If its anxiety and stress related due to family problems, money issues, professional burn out, you need to get out of the situation, because even if you feel you are fine, deep inside you are not.

tinnitus isn't a disease, it's a symptom of someone thing else that could be exasperating it, including hearing loss, stress, anxiety, depression, sleeping disorder, etc. it's all about the brain giving awareness to these internal sounds, the more awareness the more it's reinforced, and depending on who you are you could be going through something different

Everything seemed to help but symptoms always come back, along with sounds like a machine gun firing I have dizziness in any position, fullness, plugged ear, sticky feeling, I do have SNHL but would I have all of these other symptoms along with the horrible noise, I’ve seen so many medical professionals and I’m so tired, if it it weren’t for my faith I would have ended it all, Anna D.

Damn really? That's dark. It seems plenty of people follow that course, that's sad... I don't want to do the same but some days I'm tempted... Because it's so intense...

@@jazzhead335 Hey brother, thanks for asking. I habituated, by the grace of God. I did not think it was going to be possible but nowadays the ring doesn't even bother me anymore. Of course, it's my own case. Other cases are much more severe. Mine started as withdrawal from Cannabis, and aside from the tinnitus, I had horrible neuropathic pain all over my body, I literally felt like I was burning, like I was getting thrown scalding water on my skin. It was horrible. For about 6 months or something. So yeah. Luckily those times are behind. But you know life. You win some, you lose some. Much peace brother 🙏

@@vazlim i’ve had my tinnitus for a week now. It started two days after I flew back from a trip from Spain. During the landing my ears went blocked and unlike other times they didn’t unblock immediately but only after 12-16 hours. It must be said that during that trip I got ill from a bad cold during and after which I have been taking painkillers and anti-inflammatory. I also got my flu jab one day after flying back. I don’t know whether one or all these factors have caused the onset of tinnitus, but over the past 3 days I can hear it 24/7 and it’s getting me extremely anxious and scared. I can’t believe there is no cure

Hi, I used to have tinnitus but it was really low, to the point where I could only ear it in a quiet room. Three weeks ago, I had a middle ear infection that made my tinnitus a lot worse. Ive gone to the ENT, and he told me that my ear infection is totally over, and my ears are not clogged anymore, but my tinnitus is still a lot higher, and I can hear ir almost all the day. Do you think my tinnitus will go back to normal soon??? Keep up the good work

@DrCliffAuD Hi Dr Cliff. How are you? I really hope that you, all of your team of doctors, and all of your patients are doing very well. Is it ok and is it possible that people can please give you guys a call or email your guys to discuss their hearing test results with or without tinnitus or hearing loss with your or your team of doctors please? The reason why I am very kindly asking this question right now is because right now I think I just received the absolute worse news that anyone can hear about their hearing test and I really want to discuss this with another professional opinion on hearing loss and tinnitus without putting all of the details in the comment section below please. I really hope to hear from you very soon. Take care! Have a very wonderful day!
