Getting ready for the upcoming Pennsylvania Crossbow Season, the 37 Days of Awesome! Here's some tips about hunting out of a blind with a crossbow as I get ready to do just that!
This is not a channel about shooting big bucks. I don't discriminate--I'll shoot any legal deer. ;)
I want to help make RU-vid the #1 place for quality hunting entertainment. I want to help spread the hunting lifestyle. To do that, I set up this channel to showcase the crossbow and help others film their hunts and get those videos online. So, subscribe to this channel to be entertained and learn more about crossbows and filming in the outdoors.
This channel is about my love of the crossbow, hunting, and the outdoors. I hunt almost exclusively with the crossbow. I love it. Sure, like a lot of kids, I started hunting with a good ol' Model '94 Winchester 30-30 back in the 80's, but drifted away from hunting when I went off to college, law school, and started a family. As my daughter got older, I regained my interest in the outdoors, and I consider myself lucky to hunt on the same property today that I hunted on as a kid. I got the Excalibur Axiom crossbow in 2010 and I haven't looked back. This channel is the result of combining my interest in filming and hunting...

One thing I've done to try to keep my blind from being stolen. I leave a hand written note in a zip loc on the seat. " Set up for an elderly man to hunt with his grandson, please do not take. Thanks from both of them " I figure even a theif will have a fond memory of when he first began hunting. So far its worked.

I had a blind that was stolen after spring gobbler season. I think I might have left in up an extra day or two and it was gone. Never had a problem with stolen blinds. I hunt on private property which I guess that would not stop anyone...Thieves are thieves........

Clearing the ground inside the blind is very important. I usually buy a moving blanket for about $5 and place that on the ground inside the blind. This will help with warmth for your feet and help keep from rustling any leaves that may be in your blind.

If the deer aren't moving and you need a nap, they are nice to have along too. Good suggestion. Main thing is it helps be quiet. If you need to take a nappie, put your cell phone alarm on vibrate so you don't blow of an early moving deer away with the audible alarm and of course remember to lie to your hunting buddies about napping.

I’ve used cheap ground carpet, from a hardware store. Cedar or pine chips makes good sense! I like that!!

I love hunting out of ground blinds, and it's really nice that you don't have to worry about being full camo you can just wear normal clothing or blackout. And it's nice being able to move around inside without the worry of being spotted

Love your show. No snobbing. Tips here are really appropriate. I do brush my blind with dead fir branches and fens only, found on site, just to break the silhouette. Easy light job. A strong 50+ mph wind with the open windows can drag your blind very far especially when installed close to a field if not well anchored. I experienced it. I use all the pin holes and side strings available. I use the inside camo mesh on which I glued some small magnets to hold them to other ones glued on the tent, avoiding to use those velcros. Deer coming I simply pull on the mesh and it silently comes down, my crossbow beeing already set to shoot. I do crank the crossbow only one hour before the "hot time" based on what the cameras tell (we don't have so many deer here in Quebec). I always decock my crossbow simply using hardwood dowel rods, leaving one or two at each hunting station and at the camp. They fly funny when shot straight to the sky over a field!

Yes, I too love the ground blind. It feels more hunt-tish to be in a blind or even a hide-out made of brush and bushes. As you get older, fatter, or just less nimble blinds can actually be a safer alternative.

I set up my Doghouse two weeks before I hunted. The first morning in the blind, I took a beautiful doe after only 30 minutes! One of the best hunting purchases I have ever made.

I have used both tree stands and blinds. Taken bucks using both. My biggest buck taken was from the ground. I put up my blind up early a couple years ago. When I went in at zero dark thirty, i couldn't find it. A bear had shredded it. 🤤🦌 Haven't purchased a new one yet. Thanks for the video, rich!!

Im handicapped and this year for the first time I am using a blind for deer. In my condition I find it much easier and safer for me. I have been using my blind for turkey for many years. One thing I would add to your video is an old blanket on the inside to keep noise down if you have any leaves or twigs

Hi 👋 Rich , It’s me again your senior elite arbelest advisor .Now give me a little respect..I got you by 30 years .. Your toutorial was impressive and why you have your comment group . First I set my blind up yesterday and the deer 🦌 were present less than 24 hrs.. I set it out to air it out and to be accepted..I advocate complete camo ..It took me only 4 white pine conifer branches to completely cover it secured with black paracord tied longitudinally. Fortunally I have brush covering 270°. The branches may turn brownish towards the season but you add a couple of green and you have your camo back . When I go inside I’ll trim the little twigs to suit my shooting lanes ..For sitting I find a swivel chair with a back that doesn’t squeak is great with no armrest which will get in your way . I do support a fixed stand that enables you to tilt up/down and tilt left/right with a soft cloth to rest your bow on •• no squeaks .. I lost a shot 2 yrs ago because of the infamous squeak ..I don’t know about resting your bow on your knee. Your getting away with it now , but your breathing is so critical at THE MOMENT.. Lastly being a photographer you should know about contrast .. I agree ☝️ with you on black . Black on black they can’t see you .. Wearing camo your silhouetted ..This is my opinion ..By the way the towel on my support stand ..In 2017 I shot my biggest deer ever ..An 8 pointer weighing 230 lbs on Nov 12 .. Greetings PA neighbor! Last year was the first I hunted from a blind (same one as you have featured in your video). Absolutely the best hunting experience I ever had. Shot a doe, which was nice, BUT the best part were all the animals doing their thing not even knowing I was around. Squirrels jumping on the blind, one nearly coming in. Had 6 turkeys walk right past me (1 week from fall turkey being in season though). and much, much more.

These are just my thoughts but brushing in a blind is to break up the outline of the blind. I have tucked mine up under a low hanging tree or behind a low hanging branch and leaned a few branches against the corners and that worked just fine. Also, I walk into the spot that I'll be hunting with the crossbow cocked and loaded. I dont know how many times Ive walked in and spooked deer out of my spot with an unloaded crossbow. I kicked 5 deer out from under my stand walking in once. Now, Im always cocked, locked, and ready to rock before I get there.

I have two Ladder Stands and two Ground Blinds. I use all four depending on the weather and wind direction. Rich is 100% correct about getting the blind set-up in the field early. I brush in my ground blinds more for hiding it from humans and less for the deer. They get accustomed to the blind. I even brush in my ladder stands for the same reasons.

Just watched two of your videos and and found them very interesting. I'm 74 yrs with a Vietnam disabled arm. Using a compound is getting harder so will be getting a crossbow. I think I've possibly left a dozen comments on videos I've watched over the years, mostly because I have nothing that interesting to say. I do want to tell you though that of all the deer hunting videos I've watched both on TV and internet, I believe "Death by Bunjie" is far and away my favorite. Your style and knowledge is invaluable as well as entertaining but the most important ingredient is, well, your lack of self importance. Try a steady eddie attatched to your crossbow for stabilizing. You dont need to carry any extra gear. Plus you can use it to shoot from many different positions to include standing, sitting or kneeling

When I was recovering from Covid 19. I was drowning in cabin fever. I was 68 years old and allowed to crossbow hunt here in Minnesota. It was deer season and the state gives 100% disabled Veterans a free deer tag. I already had mine, and I decided that since my 14-day Quarteen was up. I was going hunting. I already had my gear packed and ready to go. Settling up my blind was a lot harder than I thought it would be. After 2 hours of rest, set up. rest again. I finally got my hunting blind all setup. I really enjoyed the fresh air and saw several deer that were out of range. But I was having a great time. But as the afternoon approached I started feeling very weak. In fact, I had to use my crossbow as a crutch, which I leaned on heavily. I could take only very small steps. I got back to the car where I thought to rest and then go back and get my gear. But I was getting progressively weaker. I made the decision to drive home while I still could. I was down for 2 days. When I went back to retrieve my gear it was gone. So, I believe a very important point is, Mark all your gear and leave a number on your gear. That way if some common lowlife steals your gear he might very well be found out when using it. As it stands now I could be standing right by my blind with all my gear inside, and not be able to prove a thing. Sad that Minnesota has gone this way.

Totally with you, even with regular show with my kid, Excaliber crossbows etc but as far as scents! Scents are a marketing scam that don't work, they actually help deer smell you if your foolish enough to use. I've hunted every year from 16yrs old till 38. 5 years ago I started to get 3 deer a year including bucks. It wasn't until I quit bathing, washing cloths, with "scent eliminators that I started winning. That says alot!! I do let my outer cloths sit outside for a few hours or even in the semi clean garage so they're safe from elements. What broadhead do you use? I'm rage all the way!! I'll never use anything else with my Excaliber crossbow.

You could also plant small trees in pots so you can keep a nice natural structure / shape break up. When your finished pop them on the trailer and take it all back to the shed. Saves dead branches snapping underfoot and tearing your blind.

One thing I learned this year, the hard way, is make sure that your crossbow fits inside your blind when you're ready to take a shot. Unfortunately I bought a really small pop-up blind and had a deer 10 yards in front of me, went to take the shot and the arms of my crossbow didn't fit towards the top of the blind. It had more of a tapered pyramid shape so once I raised it up it hit the sides of the blind and spooked everybody.

That's the only way I hunt and love it, eye to eye! I never brush in a blind, if you put it up early enough it's fine, plus no chance of any unwanted noise if the wind kicks up or you happen to bump the inside of the blind.

1st time this season going to hunt out of a ground blind with a crossbow. Had a stroke last September 17th. Agree with a lot of what you said. I don't brush my ground blind in either. It's been set out for a little bit. Deer comes by it doesn't spook them. It's a Tidewe see through blind. I don't shoot through the mesh either on any blind. To me it can hurt arrow flight but that's me. If you set them out early enough deer will get use to them. I'll never brush one in. Now if I take one out to set up and hunt then I will put it under some low hanging limbs or brush. But I won't cut stuff to brush in

One thing I do for figuring out yardage is that I buy those wire flags & set them straight in front of me at 10,20, & 30 yards . You can put them in all directions directions if need be. The flags are cheap & come in a lot of 50. I all so will use them if need be for my trails to and from my stands. They come in a couple of different colors . Just a thought.

The lengths some people go to trying to kill a deer cracks me just keep it simple dont over complicate it!!! and learn to sit still ive killed over 50 deer some i was just sitting against a tree with a couple branches to break up my outline time in the woods is the most important thing best of luck to all !!!

Lots of good information here. Everyone has different experiences, but in my experience I have had great success with bucks (young and old) hunting from a ground blind and many times just backing my wheelchair up to a tree like if I was turkey hunting. Using a blind I don't normally brush one in unless I am doing a "setup and kill", type of hunt. I believe one of the biggest factors with a blind or just concealing yourself is breaking up your silhouette. I like to position my blind next to a big tree or between two trees, or anywhere I can have something thats bigger than my blind behind it. Setting up this way I have had deer come within feet of me including big bucks, but again everyones experiences are different. In a perfect world I would be in a tree, but I have yet to find a way to get my wheelchair 15 feet high!

I use a five gallon plastic bucket with a soft seat lid on it, to rest my crossbow on with the butt stock in my lap. That saves a lot of movement when a deer is close. It is a simple movement to raise my crossbow and be on target immediately. Time is of the essence! I use the bucket to store items in when not hunting in the blind. Darker clothes work well to conceal you. I like a shady spot for the blind. If you have sun on you, the blind will get very hot in the sun on those early season days. If you sweat, you stink and they can then smell you!

The best analogy for brushing in your blind put it in a spot that’s already brushed in. It’s there living room if you walk in your living room and see a chair you have never seen before you are going to be alarmed and you will leave to ask your wife what the hell is in our living room!? Lol

Excellent assortment of tips. I've been wearing camo in the blind, this year I'll be wearing black. I use 1/2" rebar pieces that are cut 14" long for stakes with about 2" exposed above ground. I leave them in the ground permanently and tie a ribbon of orange surveyors flagging tape to them so I can find them again. All hail the 100 year old apple tree! (and Bunjie too).

Dollar General sells some shepards hook pot hangers for $5 that are great height for pop up blinds. I use one for my backpack and one to hang my crossbow from!

not sure what you mean by shooting off your knee. have been crossbow hunting due to eye problems for about ten yeats now and shot my new ki vtal x in the 90 degree heat labor day. son and i shot off my deer hunting stoolfor realistic dry runthrough. have taught him how to brace your elbo into your chest and didn't have sling on it yet. he was able to hit palm size paint splotch at 20 to 50 yds with 3 power old nikon bolt scope....everything off the main crosshair with 400 gr arrow setup. didn't get out the chrono, but it must be fast enough! i enjoy your down to earth videos. thanks!

I live and crossbow hunt Maryland also, from a ground blind over bait. I don't bother brushing in either, if you're covered up in game without it, why worry about it ? I just found you, and im loving the vids ! Thanks

I have this same blind and love it if something should happen and i pass out not far to fall . I do have Ladder Tree Stands and Climbers but with my Heart problem i`m afraid i will pass out again and don`t want to fall out of a tree . I need to take my blind out of the bag to see if it has Blue writing on it and it probably does because it is an older blind . Thanks for the tips Rich .

Rich, good video, I like you do not use the cheap stakes that come with ground blinds, most of the better stakes have a hole in them, which I typically attach about (1 foot ) of paracord to each one that way it is very easy to remove them when you are done.....

Great video! Hunting out of a blind is my favorite way to hunt deer. I have brushed them in and I have just left them like they are. And I have been just as successful either way. So I guess it is the hunters preference if they want to brushing it in or not.

A properly bushed in blind will be invisible to everything. place them in talk grass in bushes. I don't like placing blinds in the middle of an open field because they do stick out. Use the current vegitation to do the majority of brushing in then add to it.

just my .02, brushing vs non brushing blind is like wearing ghillie suit vs normal camo, it's the outline that sticks out that they don't like, and of course deer hate black holes where turkey it doesn't matter what you do just throw a blind up in middle of pasture and they'll walk up to it. Best way is like you say to put it up a month plus before season so their used to it. I always find a cedar tree around here and tuck it up to the trunk of cedar bush, trim limbs if needed and let the outside limbs go around the blind and had great success with that. If i had a big buck staging an area there's no way i'd risk putting up a blind in his core w/o brushing it in a lot.

I found that those pegs keep the blind pretty steady in wind! I've been using those stakes for years. Also you didn't mention that if you prefer to wear black to blackout too.

On the public ground I hunt pop up blinds do notcwork for a considerable number of reasons I invested in a very good cut fabric strip Ghillie suit and a great face mask wear a camo ball cap sit in some good cover and cut a few branched thick with leaves to stick in the ground to breakup my silhouette use my Fiskers pruning shears to cut shot openings Has worked extremely well for me talking had dozens of non-shooter bucks and many dozens of doe walk past me some only 10-15 FEET away looked dead at me and NEVER had ANY clue I was there Bigest bucks I let walk by were solid low 130" bucks. My absolute main driving force behind buying a crossbow was having just to many instances where bucks at 140" or larger in bow range but I new Id never get away with drawing without getting busted and as I said pop up blinds on the public lands I hunt just aren't a viable or practical option so Im going to use a crossbow as I can get away with slooooooowly bringing a crossbow to my shoulder and shooting.

Hello: I bought the legend, Ameristep ground blind one with hendged door much better than the zipper! I always wondered how many deer heard me open the blind , The zipper on a quiet morning is kinda loud

I have a question about taking your crossbow off of safety. My wicked ridge has an audible click when I push off the safety. I have tried lubricating it to muffle the sound with no luck. Given that, would you take it off safety when you load your bolt? The sound is very mechanical and I have nightmares about spooking the deer when I am about to take my shot.

I know what you mean and I don't like the ones that click. I would leave it on until you are ready to shoot. That's really the point of the safety in my opinion. Maybe cover it with the palm of your hand as you're easing it up?

I watched your video on blinds. Very good set up! I’ve been using a blind for a doe location too. For 15 years or more. I agree with you mine isn’t brushed in either. It works great believe it!

Great tips and ideas as always Rich! I have one ground blind shaped like a big hat bail which I used in Ohio last year for the Map Reading Challenge (Sean NcVeighs annual channel hunt). , but not sure I’ll use it this Fall. I think with self filming your hunts the tree stand gives you better coverage. I’m planning on using a ladder stand on private land this year and the TreeLounger (climber) on public. Just hoping to get my first crossbow kill on film as well!🦌🎯

You know more than I do for sure . I just started hunting. But I set up a blind yesterday and after I left 5 doe came out 15 yards in front of it and ate some corn I had laid out. Then today I killed my first deer ever out of it. I did let it air out the night before.
