I think deescalation is such an underrated skill. They don’t focus enough on this. It can also carry over into other aspects of life beyond your career in healthcare. As far as standing up for yourself and asking for respect I agree. You do need to consider your patient’s mental state though. If your patient has advanced dementia or is under the influence asking for respect may not mean anything to them. It is also often beyond their control. I love this video I just wanted to make that point. 💜 I always see nurses and CNAs getting so offended by patients that can’t control what they say or are very agitated when they don’t have control over their emotions and it doesn’t help to be so firm with them.

Did you ever wonder why patients are angry? It could be drugs it could be alcohol, no, it’s miss treatment and a loss of independence and all the patient wants to do is get out of there, nurses 10 to be bossy, argumentative, bullying…

Im not a nurse, but I work in retail and I have came across angry people and one thing I would like to say is to try your hardest to not let that angry person ruin your day or make you upset, and when I am dealing with a angry customer i try to see it form there shoes to best understand how to help that person.

F that, they are just Karen’s of a different color. Why we gotta coddle these wieners.

Some of the things said here will piss the patient off more. "I understand you feel upset", "what do YOU want me to do now" will be taken as insincere blow off comments.Especially if you are dealing with psych patients who will see right through that.

Listening sometimes takes an hour. So what of your other six patients who need their antibiotics or their pain meds or their breathing treatments. Are we to tell them “Oh sorry, had to listen to the freakizoid over there”, so sorry.

This angry patient thing comes up far too often, why do you think that is? Do you ever take time to find out what troubles patients as a whole when I was in the hospital with pneumonia? I did not want to be touched I wanted the Nurse out of the room Hench an argument the day before I buzz the call light for an hour so one day the nurse doesn’t come the next day she won’t leave further frustrating everyone. You’re passive positions are a deception, you’re not as kind a person that you try to reveal…

You’re the type of patient she’s talking about. A rude boomer who wants what they want when they want it. You’re in a hospital not your house too bad.

This should go hand in hand with cpi training, going from retail and agreeing with the customer, to working in health care and being neutral is a challenge, great tips!

How long have you been a nurse, these are Polly Anna answers, suggestions at best. Not real world, post covid, psycho world bull crappola. People be BSC, bat shit cray. This is beyond Karen stuff.

Yeah, yeah, yeah this all sounds time consuming. Ain’t got time for that shit, trying to save lives not coddle family members and cool clammy foreheads.

Grab my manager? Manager says bite me, call security, then you look like the “A” hole.

Here’s a new wrinkle, just leave the patient alone and stop trying to create a situation that doesn’t exist

Needless to say, I totally agree with you Ashley. Having said that, in the facility where I work we have ZERO TOLERANCE regarding this type of behavior from pt's or staff. Furthermore, the moment a pt. signs in at our facility, a booklet is giving that touches very topic, where they have to sign that they agree not to engage in this type of behavior since the facility doesn't accept verbal or confrontational attack to our staff.

This facility must be private, however lots of NHS patients love to attack and put their anger towards the front staff.

It is rough dealing with an angry patient who is also confused. Had a kind of scary experience where I almost got hit so it was kind of traumatizing as a nursing student. Knowing your position in the room is something I really learned that day😳

Excellent advice! I am not a nurse or student as I am in the ‘thinking about it stage’ but considering I live with a loved but volatile parent....this advice is priceless! Thanks!

I was in an out of the hospital quite a bit this last year for leukemia, and the nurses kept making me angry by always wanting to put my bed alarm on at night (It makes a lot of noise and signals to the nursing staff when the patient tries to get out of bed). I had zero falls, and I had no trouble getting up and walking to the toilet or wherever, but they kept on insisting on putting on the alarm. Several times I had to get my doctors to intervene to tell the nurses that I didn't need the alarm and to shut it off. That was so frustrating. I know they were following some simple liability rules but it seems they could have done better.
