If there’s one thing people know about Japan, it’s sumo wrestling. Sumo tournaments happen six times a year, and three of those take place in Tokyo. If you miss the tournament, no worries, you can get up close and personal with a sumo experience and even fight a retired wrestler for yourself!

Always been into sumo I watch the tournaments when they come on nhk. My favorite is Abi the bad boy. Lets go Abi !!!!

Nice oshidashi victory there! While the best way to see sumo is to attend a honbasho (grand tournament), there are many other events at various times throughout the year. There are the jungyo (provincial tours), which are listed on the Japan Sumo Association's calendar. There are also the retirement ceremonies of former top-ranked wrestlers, shrine events, and the occasional charitable event. These generally include morning practice, demonstrations, and non-serious bouts between top rankers (because no one wants to get hurt on tour). Then there are the amateur tournaments, which lack the pageantry of professional sumo but can offer good sport just the same. Correction: the bow twirling ceremony is NEVER done by a wrestler in the top two divisions. It is done by a lower-ranked rikishi in Makushita or below. The current bow-twirlers are Satonofuji and Yuki. Satonofuji, who is almost 47 years old, is from Yokozuna Terunofuji's stable. He has been the primary bow-twirler throughout most of Terunofuji's tenure and was twirler when Harumafuji was active. He is currently Jonidan 91, near the bottom of the second-lowest division. Yuki, from Ozeki Kirishima's Minato stable, is the alternate. He is 34 and is currently ranked at 9 in the third-lowest division, Sandanme. Both men have been as high as the Makushita division, but neither has been a sekitori.

Anyone know how to get tickets to the sold out March events? Wondering if there is a secondary market for resale.

Scalping is illegal in Japan, so you won't find people outside the venue waving tickets for sale. However, if you google "buy sumo tickets," you'll get help. Even they won't have the best tickets left for the current tournament, and probably little or nothing for the weekends. If you go through a tour company, they should have tickets available that they pre-purchased for tour participants, even if tickets through the official website are sold out. A lot of them will provide stadium-style, upper-level seating, because these are generally more comfortable for people who are not used to sitting on the floor, and are also less expensive.
