"cold gray walls that surround me" ... "there's the guard and the sad old padre; arm in arm we walk at daybreak" ... He's on death row; at daybreak they're walking to his execution, after which his body will be brought back home for burial. At least that's the way I've always taken it.
David Young, I believe you are correct. That's the conclusion I came to also. He's on death row thinking about where they will bury him after his execution, "Beneath the Green Green Grass Of Home." When I was a kid I thought it was only about a guy missing home until I listened more as an adult.
You're almost right, although it was a little more dramatic than just passing away. The four grey walls that surround him and the walk with a padre at daybreak refer to him going to his execution before finally being buried in his home town.
yeah, about the last night of a prisoner who is on death row and about to be executed (he awakes surrounded by four grey walls), dreaming of his home and his childhood sweetheart
If u want some more Tom, 1. Find the clip labeled Tom Jones Dancing 2. He sang Thunderball! One of the BEST James Bond themes ever! His voice is how Bond would sound if he could sing! The absolute height of macho male culture! Can’t get annny more testosterone than that record!! Lol
Even though this song was written by Curly Putman and sung by Porter Wagner, George Jones and even Elvis. No one could compare with Tom Jones' version. I loved this song so much it may have been the first of his songs I learned completely to sing it.
Flipping thru youtube and listening to some Tom Jones when I came across this channel. It surprises me when young listener discovers these great vocalist. Not many singer today can match the talent of the big names of the pass. However, this poor girl is out of her league. First she isn't appreciating Sir Tom Jones' powerful voice and secondly she doesn't has fully understanding the story within the song. Perhaps your next review should be some kindergarten class doing twinkle twinkle little star.
He knows well the green green grass of ho. E. Where he comes from Wales is a beahtifull country. The reason its so green is it rains a great deal which makes a lush verdent sight. The hills n mountains n vallys beautifull.
Hi, Tom was In Jail as dreams of his home. On death row. Then he was taken by the padre to be killed at dawn. And they laid his body beneath the green grass of home, By the shade of that old oak tree. Stay safe from Covid-19 to you and your loved ones.
You need to watch him do the song Kiss (the same one that was done by Prince) Its a more recent song from him. Not recent, like just yesterday recent, but I want to say from the 90's maybe? I have a feeling you will enjoy it. I know I did. 😘
The song is about someone on death Row who is going to his death in the morning so on his last night he is dreaming of home he then wakes up and realises he's in prison and about to be executed.
There is an even better live version of this song from Tom’s TV show, This Is Tom Jones. It’s almost like a music video with Tom singing this song as a prisoner behind bars.
The ending is rather morbid, but this was actually a fairly common lyrical device in Country Music in the late fifties-to-the-mid sixties (the singer singing from the grave).
The narrator was in prison"for there's a Guard and there's a sad old Padre" on death row l after which he was laid 'neath the green green grass of home.
He was in prison, he was going to be put to.death in the prison he was in. There's four gray walls and a sad old padre (priest) arm in arm we'll walk at daybreak.
