"No, we don't ever call them beer joints, night clubs are the places where I work, you meet a lot of people there, but no, there ain't no chance of gettin' hurt" - Tom T. Hall. Complete lyrics below.
Vocals: Tom T. Hall
Words & Music: Tom T. Hall
Original Album: Homecoming (Mercury Records - 1969)
Lyrics:
I guess I should've written, Dad, to let you know that I was coming home
I've been gone so many years, I didn't realize you had a phone
I saw your cattle coming in, boy they're looking mighty fat and slick
I saw Fred at the service station, told me that his wife is awful sick
You heard my record on the radio, oh, well it's just another song
But I've got a hit recorded and it'll be out on the market 'fore too long
I got this ring in Mexico, no, it didn't cost me quite a bunch
When you're in the business that I'm in, the people call it puttin' up a front
I know I've lost a little weight, I guess I am looking kind of pale
If you didn't know me better, Dad, you'd think that I'd just gotten out of jail
No, we don't ever call them beer joints, night clubs are the places that I work
You meet a lot of people there, but no, there ain't much chance of gettin' hurt
I'm sorry that I couldn't be there with you all when Momma passed away
I was on the road and when they came and told me it was just too late
I drove by the grave to see her, boy, that really is a pretty stone
I'm glad that Fred and Jan are here, it's better than you being here alone
Well I knew you's gonna ask me who the lady is that's sleeping in the car
That's just a girl who works for me and, man, she plays a pretty mean guitar
We worked in San Antone last night, she didn't even have the time to dress
She drove me down from Nashville and to tell the truth I guess she needs the rest
Well, Dad, I gotta go, we got a dance to work in Cartersville tonight
Let me take your number down, I'll call you, and I promise you I'll write
Now you be good and don't be chasin' all those pretty women that you know
And by the way if you see Barbara Walker tell her that I said "Hello."

The last line is devastating. This song is so richly layered, touching on generational differences, how alienated and removed from his roots he has become. He knows cattle but chose to leave the farm. He means to call or visit but just never gets around to it. His promise to call, he means it, but he won't call. He didn't even have his dad's number and had to ask for it. The next time he comes will be for his dad's funeral. Then the gut-punch, Barbara Walker, the lost love, the one he left behind, representing the life he could have had. For every line of poetry there are others unwritten, but there to discover if one listens for them. Songwriting and storytelling really don't get better than this. Rest in Peace.

There is so much richness, in every line, but the last one got me, the first time I heard this song. And I was a very young man, just a boy, of 11, or 12, when I first heard it. Even at that tender age it resonated. There is blog post on the net, by a guy (Larry Grimes), who got to meet, and play golf with T, several years ago. He inquired of the Storyteller if he could ask him a question: "Hall smiled and nodded at me as if he knew my next question. “Was there really a Barbara Walker?” I asked. Hall smiled even bigger and then he said to me… “What do you think?”........... As I started to get in my car to leave, Hall turned and said to me: “Wasn’t there always a Barbara Walker somewhere in the lives of all of us?”......... Indeed ...... Simply, yet Beautifully, said.

This song made me cry today, with the verse about "sorry that I couldn't be here with you all when Mama passed away..." and thankful that I was with my mother, but still upset that I wasn't able to be with my father (which is probably just how he wanted it), and then remembering how perfect my mother always made Christmas, and what a sorry imitation of her I am. Of course, there was a price for those perfect Christmases, and that price was how much anxiety went into it for her, how tightly wound she was, how little it took to "ruin" it. I remember the year my first child was a little over two years old, and I found my dear mother crying on the floor of the basement laundry room, because his little-boy curiosity had overwhelmed his manners, and he had "messed up" a display he didn't yet understand was only to look at. At the time I didn't understand, and I thought she was finding fault with my child and with my inadequate parenting, and resented her demands that I be "perfect" and have a "perfect" family. Today I realized that the pressure to be perfect was something that she put on herself, and that the demands were on her. How I wish that I could go back now and just hug her, and tell her it's HER we want to spend time with, and let's just enjoy the kids while they're little. It seems like there are so many things we don't learn (maybe even can't learn?) until it's too late to apply them. All that from one "little" song!

The words to this song remind me of my own life both good and bad. Trying to brush over things that we’re ashamed of like playing in beer joints or having a girl in the car by calling it by a better name or telling about her good qualities. I’ve done this with my own parents in the past. But like the old man in this song, he doesn’t approve but loves his boy and wants to spend time with him. Just like my folks did.

Tom T’s nickname “The Storyteller” was a great one but I think his overall gift as a musician as well as poet, and his beautiful, deeply moving singing voice, are often overlooked. As a lyricist/poet, he didn’t just tell great stories, he sometimes achieved an almost impossible compression of life experience into a handful of words. “My mother is dead/ She had long black hair/ Once she promised me a teddy bear”. (Strawberry Farms)

Perfect storytelling, A wannabee country singer who may or may not have a "record" coming out soon, hanging out with a woman who doesn't want to come in and meet his family (hungover), obvious small talk ie. Cattle, rings, nightclubs, mother's headstone never addressing the elephant in the room, he didn't come home when his mother died so his sister and brother had to do all the arrangements, I have a brother that does the same thing, swoops in after everything is done, probably dropped by to see if she left him anything. ITS GREAT TOM T. HALL!!!!!

If I may, Zack, your comments right or wrong are very crude. When I was on a tour, I missed my mothers funeral. That was 1996 The phones in Mexico were cut and I never knew. Respectfully, until you have been on a tour especially in the late Sixties (60) it is not a ' bed of roses ' if I may listen to Bob Seager Turn the page, as that"s dead on how it is...

There's an entire story in and between practically every line of this song, more of the unsaid that spoken. It takes a genuine storyteller to write such wonderful poetry.
